When starting at this school I was so excited but not for long, in year seven I had to move class because of struggles with another pupil the teachers didn’t do much because of it, most of the teachers are extremely unpleasant and rude and a lot of the male ones are creepy. In year 8 my Welsh teacher had shouted at me for holding my pen, I didn’t do anything wrong. Even the some of the pupils were weird, for instance there was a girl in my old class and I was sat in technology and she had her hands down her tights then she started to lick her fingers as if she was the only one in the room (everyone saw). I’ve seen countless people get bullied for existing like this one girl I used to be friends with used to cause hell for another pupil. You’d get screamed at if your forgot a school supply for example your book, pencil case, etc. if you forgot anything to do with your pe kit your teachers would write an angry letter to your parents and give you a bad mark on class charts. If you spoke even a single word of English you’d get told off. But some kids weren’t even told off for shouting the most diabolical things ever. Not every teacher was horrible for example my year seven English teacher was the sweetest person on the planet and my science teacher during year eight was amazing. I ended up leaving the school and have yet to returned to school.
I love the school and the teachers as they are very kind and helpful in most circumstances, however I do believe the lessons need to be altered as technology in my opinion should be as important as the English Subject.
When moving up to this school, I remember feeling extremely excited and grown up at the thought of making new friends, moving classes to have different lessons, and different teachers for each subject.
Little did I know this school was one of the most horrific experiences I’ve had. To begin with I really struggled with maths, to the point I was put in a room with computers that hardly worked to do equations once a week. This made no difference to my school life, as I still ended up struggling (A LOT) to the point I failed maths gcse three times.
Next, hierarchical pupil ranking system. The more rich and well off pupils would be treated much differently to the pupils living in not so nice areas or with not as much money. Treated almost as if they were friends, compared to ‘common people’ who were treated as if they were all naughty school kids. Not only was there an hierarchical pupil ranking system based off where you lived, but one based off what you were good at, mainly sport. If you were good at athletics, rugby, or netball, then you would be straight in the teachers good books. In fact you could vandalise and not be told off.
Next, teachers would bully pupils. Now I know there’s a point where teachers have to discipline pupils. However there is a fine line between disciplining and humiliation. For example, a teacher shouting in front of the whole cafeteria at a pupil who forgot their homework. Making the pupil cry, I saw that with my own two eyes. There was one fine example of a teacher who would bully, and she did exactly that to the two people in the class who just happened to be the ‘poorest’. This teacher again used my homework as a whole example of what not to do, I’d never felt so humiliated.
On the subject of bullying, there is no doubt there will be fights and arguments. However one time three boys jumped out on one girl and battered her. Nothing was done about it. I mentioned being bullied by my former pupils, nothing was done. When nothing is done you lose faith in the people who are meant to guide and help you forward, yet all I got told was ‘I want to eat my food’.
I remember in a certain lesson, I was told I was never going to pass. I was going to fail, I’d fail my coursework and my exams because I was a pathetic excuse for a student. At that point I was convinced I just wanted to drop out at 14, imagine a 30 something year old gossiping with other students in your class and then coming to you and making you feel like nothing.
This school mentally affected me and caused my anxiety to get worse. I could never send my future children to that school to feel the same way me and, many others I know were treated
It's amazing. They are quite strict with making sure you speak welsh but lots of options and teachers are really open to help. Wellbeing classes are also available and are welcome to anyone.
