I will say that this place does have the days where it's bearable the rest is just a mess. I was the type to stick to myself and was too nervous to speak up if anything had happened, I was bullied not occasionally but there were the moments where it would happen, but when it did happen those who did the bullying would only get attention and they would sometimes treat these students as friends or that is what it looked like. Yes, I was given "counselling" for the bullying but this counsellor would always ask me about home rather than school, and it wasn't just the counsellor it was the school itself asking how was home, pretty much putting the blame at home when it was all at the school. My attendance was awful cause I was too stressed in entering the school from the bullying and I wasn't the only one, I have heard that someone that I know had to leave the school as they were bullied and this bullying had caused them to gain eating problems. The place is a mess and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
This school has far too many children in it the school is overrun please do not send your child to this school unless you want them to become depressed and disillusioned the staff have no time to do anything and most of them seem to hate there job and the children suffer for it.
I have been to Workington Academy Mr Bird was very friendly and approachable and we did fun things but now we've got Mr Bedford and it is very dull we have to wear this uniform which is black so in the summer you get frazzled and are burning off and you can't even play on your phones at break and dinner time also we never have any fun and get forced into coming to school it's like a prison other than that its good.
I find Workington Academy a school which students have no free opinion or have trust in there staff members and the lack of respects our students get.
The school gives students 30 minutes - 2 hour detentions for invalid reasons which don't have proof provided but what they think based on your personality.
The school is supposed to support mental health but students are told to suck it up or there is nothing they can do about it. I find this sickening that students don't get support with there mental health as it can cause bad things to occur.
Students arent being sent home after being physically sick which puts the class and teachers at risk then they complain about attendance?
What i also find ridiculous is that students dont get free opinions on the school but instead get a detention for calling there school a 'joke' which is freedom of speech.
At dinner time students get 30 minutes to que in massive lines and to eat there food which i find sickening that students are limited that much of a short time to be provided with food.
If you don't have money on your account they don't allow you to eat for the day which is absolute a disgrace as everyone deserves a nice warm food.
Shortage of teachers. Supply teachers have told students to 'play on their phones' when there is no work for them in class. Head is attempting to work with the students and parents, but not accepting this was said to multiple students. How can students trust the school when they are effectively being called liars by the heads of years and SLT members.
They leave you behind on trips if you don't have a certain type of attendance which we all are sick at some time in our life of need a day of due to stress and yet all you talk about is attendance when half of your teachers are never in?
That is mainly me writing my experience here at workington academy along side over comments about the school. If theres an issue with this review or you dis agree i honestly couldn't care less.
Please take the things i have stated into further action as it is not acceptable.
Don’t attend don’t wast the time here. They think they’re quirky by making us do things different from other schools. No wonder the report is only “good” - that’s nothing to brag about - especially how it took them long enough. Other schools have much less pressure on students and more freedom and still manage “outstanding”. I think the rules can be so stupid and awkward . I heard that they also want to get rid of skirts but use the excuse of “gender neutral uniform” but in reality it’s just them being sexist and weird about young girls showing their legs. This problem will never leave until they let go of the whole idea of skirts being short is a distraction. Well tell the boys that’s their issue instead of making young girls feel sexualised and guilty for a man’s disgusting thoughts.
Meals are raw and disgusting, they get embarrassed when parents complain on Facebook and tell them to take the posts down. Lol. No wonder no teachers but the food. It’s disgusting and overpriced literally scamming children for a bottle of water. It’s a fortune, and unnecessary. Especially for the quality of it. So inadequate
This school is horrendous, and the sixth form is somehow worse. The sixth form staff have NO RESPECT OR CARE for the students or their mental health. The sixth form students are kicked out of sixth form in the first year of study due to low grades, in which they are only given 2 WEEKS to find a replacement in education. I believe this is extremely unfair, also due to the fact that no other school in the area has the same policy. If you are thinking about attending here the best answer I can provide for you, is DONT.
I actually felt really depressed attending here the amount of pressure and sh*t I got from their stupid rules they think they’re quirky but no it’s actually embarrassing how bad they want to be different. Maybe look st the terrible grades ur getting from students and compare to other schools and realise the stupid rules of kicking students out for bad grades in a levels isn’t helping. They don’t care about mental health clearly by thinking the pressure helps students improve work lol. They need to look at how other schools do kt and stop bragging about the only recent “good” ofsted report. Took them long enough. Only brag when it gets to “outstanding” which will take double the time it took for a “good” ofsted report. Also school dinners are terrible they serve raw chicken and tell Facebook parents to delete posts about their complaints because they’re that embarrassed. No wonder teachers don’t purchase the canteen food.
It is a very bad school. It’s awkward rules to pressure students to work harder do not work. Things such as no study leave, forcing students to come in for pointless time where they can spend revising. Things like non uniform days, banned, why can other schools do so but this one can’t, it looks incapable of having fun activities for children to involve in - especially compared to other schools. I heard they Threaten sixth-form students that they will be kicked out for bad AS levels in year 12, this is no threat in any other school I know of. How is this meant to help grades? Other than put students under anxiety and stress which probably results into the bad as grades the school gets. Sixth-form students cannot leave in free periods which again, some other schools allow, it should be optional for students as it’s their decision to waste this time messing about or revising from home. Study environments can be distracting with friends obviously, home sounds a better environment for some. Minimal productive school trips to evolve curriculum and learning in a fun engaging way, especially older years although they sit exams, these things are useful to mental health: This school does not consider. There are no half-days like other schools, which I never understand why they make the children stay in for the full day? Extra two lessons? Not really sure, but there’s a lot of things they think they’re helping but it doesn’t. It’s stressful and overwhelming for the students to set these horrible expectations and feel under pressure thats unnecessary when other schools who result with similar (or even better) grade results in GCSEs or A-LEVELS manage these little things much better, the school is trying but not very well, in fact in the worse ways possible. They want to be different so bad, but instead just makes students hate the environment and embarrassing compared to other schools; I mean look at the ofsted reports; only just received “good”… other schools manage the students mental health and rules and still manage to get “outstanding” learn from others rather than trying to be quirky.
The sixth form here is actually awful, they have NO respect or care for their students or their mental health. Being kicked out of sixth from with 2 WEEKS to find a new arrangement is UNFAIR, and worse due to the fact NO OTHER SCHOOL DOES THIS. I do not recommend and I think everyone should rethink their opinions on going here.
This school is so bad do not attend to the school or sixth form. Kicking students out for their as level results, giving us 15 days to find elsewhere to go. The sixth form experience made me depressed and I had no will to live. They need to sort themselves out
Used to attend this school around 3 years ago until I moved to a much better school. They do not do anything to sort out bullying, they didn’t take it seriously until my mother contacted the Board of Governors - however even then they did not do anything to resolve the bullying I went though for 2 years.
