West Lakes Academy has garnered criticism for several reasons, with many citing issues related to poor academic standards, lack of effective leadership, and inadequate resources. Students often report feeling disengaged due to a rigid curriculum that fails to accommodate different learning styles or interests. Additionally, there have been complaints about inconsistent teaching quality, where some educators struggle to provide the support students need. Discipline problems and a lack of effective intervention have also been concerns, creating an environment where learning can be disrupted. Furthermore, the school's facilities are often described as outdated, and extracurricular opportunities are limited, leading to a general sense of dissatisfaction among students and parents alike. These factors contribute to the negative reputation the academy has earned over time.
They have also faced significant criticism for its lack of support for students' mental health. Many students report feeling overlooked and unsupported when dealing with stress, anxiety, or other emotional challenges. There is little evidence of a robust mental health strategy in place, and students often find it difficult to access counseling or any meaningful mental health resources within the school. Teachers and staff, already stretched thin, are often unable to provide the personalized attention or guidance needed for students struggling emotionally. As a result, students may feel isolated or ignored, further exacerbating their mental health concerns. The overall culture at the school seems to prioritize academic achievement over well-being, leaving many students feeling like their mental health is an afterthought.
West Lakes Academy has also faced criticism for hiring teachers who struggle with basic communication skills, particularly in English. Several students and parents have expressed frustration with instructors who have difficulty speaking clear, proper English, making it harder for students to fully understand lessons. This lack of effective communication can hinder learning, especially in subjects that require a high level of comprehension. In some cases, students have found it challenging to follow instructions or engage in meaningful discussions because of language barriers with their teachers. The academy's failure to ensure that all staff possess strong language skills further undermines the overall quality of education, leaving many students feeling unsupported and confused. Combined with other issues, such as inadequate mental health support and outdated facilities, this contributes to the negative reputation the school has earned.
New start of term menu and food stocking is AWFUL. My child has came home every day this week hungry. She has stated that they have taken most of the foods away saying “ they don’t have them anymore” like hashbrowns, toasties etc.Which bearing in mind they are ALL still on the menu, along with their new prices… £1.10 for HALF of a toastie and £2.20 for a whole and £2.00 for a coffee cup size pot of grapes. This is getting ridiculous I’ve had to top her money up twice this week with £20 pound both times. If this doesn’t change I will be complaining to the school because I’m not the only parent coping with this.
There are a few nice teachers and mean teacher some expect you to sit in silence and walk but some can allow you to talk and be interactive with the lessons the food staff are kind and understanding the food areas are cleaned well there are usually fair punishments obviously there are misunderstandings its a school full of teenagers going through and starting puberty with raging hormones but apart from that the school is safe in its self
The school is toxic and has been for a number of years. There is constant pressure to maintain appearances - grades, uniform, attendance, punctuality, anything that can be easily measured and put in a spreadsheet by a leadership that cares nothing for human beings and only about their own reputation.
This toxicity affects teachers and students alike; everyone is constantly watched, and the slightest mis-steps are criticised and punished, often by shouting. The fear and anxiety is palpable and is damaging the mental health of hundreds of children every year. The behaviours of both students and staff are those more commonly seen among abuse victims - startle responses, physical cowering in response to criticism, dissociation, emotional numbness, and hair-trigger tempers. This place is less a school and more a production line for psychiatric patients. That sounds extreme but so is the effect of this institution.
To put it bluntly, the entire leadership needs to be replaced, together with the staff who are too damaged to re-learn patience towards the students. Most importantly, the regime of rules, monitoring, control, and anger-based discipline needs to be thrown out.
Excellent 1st steps towards improving SEND provision
As a parent of children at this school I have for the last 4 years been frustrated by the management and staff with regard to communications and SEND provision. Today the school held their first SEND session which allowed parents WLA staff bee unique and ASD professionals to come together and discuss SEND issues at the school. Not only is this a fantastic first step for a collaborative effort to improve SEND provision for pupils but it also allowed parents to discuss their own personal stories with other parents which I always find extremely valuable as it reminds you that your not alone. Excellent 1st session for the school and can't wait to see progress continue. We'll done WLA.
Came here for a few years, wont say for which year groups or how many to not give away who I am but I left the school is depressing. Things that aren’t taken seriously include bullying, struggling in lesson and with work, mental health, home life, parents money and finance, you either need to be very rich or not well off at all (so stuff like ipads and basic meals are paid for) to send your kids here or it’ll drain your bank account.
Things that are include the amount of stripes on your tie, whether your top button is fastened, whether you have a drink out in lessons and stopping students going to the toilet.
While there I witnessed teachers screaming at students over nothing, the other side where students are really disrespectful for teachers (disrespect is the culture there basically), heads of years and other top end staff ignoring students serious needs, students crying due to desperately needing the toilet and being ignored, peoples learning disrupted because they happen to have a pair of tight fitting trousers or a nose piercing, awful teachers who either cant control their class or are horrible to their class, students nearly falling over the void area after playfighting, actual fights between students, bullying, obvious favouritism, students being made to do PE who really couldn’t, unapproachable teachers who were deliberately nasty (some of which were in roles that literally exist to help you), the list goes on. And apparently it got even worse.
Good word for most of the subject teachers now who are mostly really good and from what I’ve heard under appreciated. There are some that I’ll remember forever and will go down as really important in my life. They are the best thing about the school the higher staff are useless. But theres even some horrible subject teachers who are just as bad or worse.
Just dont bother if you want/you want your child to be both well educated and have fun at school. They’ll have neither.
What an awful school run by gormless posh pillocks.
The schools overall reputation over the past 18 months has hit the floor. The schools main selling point for you to join/apply as a student is throwing that the building costs x amount of millions sums it up really.
Barry Simpson would rather sit and play about with his keyboard than do his job at all let alone properly. The “school” is unbelievably strict to the point where you can’t walk in the corridors without one of the “ALG” morons picking you out for whatever they feel like making up in the moment and screaming at you infront of the rest of the students in the corridor.
They must go to the job centre to employ their staff, couldn’t teach a fish how to swim. They prefer making their lessons into a shouting session rather than teaching students anything necessary.
Oh and don’t forget you must have them 4 stripes present at all times!
Funny that the majority of their teachers started walking away over the past year or so and are now left with clueless old men that should’ve been retired 10 years ago teaching their students.
All the teachers in higher up roles are so far up their own arse they can’t even see the problem with the school. Oh and guess what Barry Simpson is leaving… my shock!!
Maybe the school will improve without that gormless lanky minger.
And regards to mental health… err what’s that? - Couldn’t give two fvcks, not one of them docile imbeciles.
Need to focus on the bigger picture rather than uniform and having phones in students pockets and which teacher can shout the loudest.
Anyways, whichever one of you thick headed spoons are reading this at west lakes. SORT YOUR SCHOOL OUT
this school is actual hell hole I’ve only been there not even 3 years and it’s makes me wanna end my life this school is the reason why my mental health is the shittest it could possibly be I have said to there face that I’m going to kms and all they say is that it’s not there problem well mate it’s ur fucking problem when your the one running the shit hole and trying to make it app “better” but basically just letting ppl try off themselves . They also put students in a room for like 6 hours and even more if you have an after school which are like an hour long now for the stupidest reasons like if you have apparently ignored a teacher by not answering there question your put in inclusion just sat in a room for like 6 hours straight and they excpect you to just go in there like it isn’t a problem and if you try contact your parents they threaten you with even more “consequences” for that over all it’s a shit tip and someone needs to clean it up or just get rid of it 😘
school feels like a prison. Teachers don’t care about anything other than uniform. Disrespectful towards students. And they expect us to look amazing for Ofsted, but the school is an absolute joke and I do not want to be in it no more!
the school is terribe let alone the nurse! You go to see her and she tells you there is nothing she can do but then what’s the point of her being the nurse? All the teachers hage no understanding about mh or anything they tell you they care but all they really care about if keeping up there outstanding review!!! but behind closed doors this school is absolutely terribe
this school is awful, teachers pick on students about their behavior, lateness and uniform not realizing it’s the school that causes this. they are only kids and they getting treated like shit and drained to death in the school they can’t do anything without getting screamed at, mental health is a big issue they don’t care about it a student will say something and it will never be brought up or dealt with, they have also recently turned off service by the school..what if someone needs picked up, emergency etc but the awful the way the school is and many students can’t even deal with it
The food is way overpriced it’s two pound twenty for a baguette they are expecting children not steal food but they still put the food price up it’s unbelievable they say they are going to do activities but they don’t do anything. They give you four to five pieces of homework a day they expect the students to be social rejects and not socialise and sit and do homework they care more about your uniform than your mental health.
Horrible, Wouldn’t let me go to prom, Moved here in year 10 was fine for a week then teachers went down hill, they don’t care about your mental health and bullying
This school is awful. mental health is a big issue and they do fuck all all their bothered about is the education or uniform. they don’t help kids when they need it, pick on students, make their life a living hell and no wonder half of the teachers are leaving they are realizing how much of a shit school it is, miss replh is a big problem and they way she treats students so are half of the other ALG members and teachers in that school. don’t send ur kid their it’s not how it sounds and it will make them a living hell, they need to sort it out besides kids are sat their crying, wanting to go home, locking themself in a toilet coz of the school when it’s meant to be a happy and safe place?
The school is a awful mental health is a big problem and they don’t give a fuck all they care about is money and your uniform. No surprise half of the staff are leaving probably because they realise what the school is really like
Do not send your child here unless you want them to hate their life for the next 5 years. It’s ran more like a business than a school, as long as you’ve got 4 stripes on your tie and your ankles away they do not give a flying fuck. No wonder half of the staff are leaving half of them are realising Abby deeks (headteacher) can’t run a school to save her life and her “ALG” team care more about their wages than the kids
-1000 west lakes academy is very bad and do not care for any students mental health they don’t care about the students all they care about is there behaviour and uniform they say they are there for you to talk to but when you need to talk you get shouted at and get told to go to your lesson they lock the toilet doors so no one’s allowed to the toilets and during break and lunch teachers stand outside the toilets and tell you to go away and your not aloud to go toilet during lesson so therefore you have no time to go toilet during the day even if girls are on there period. if your sick and go to the school nurse she doesn’t do anything and she just tells you to go back to your lesson or she checks your temperature and doesn’t do anything. students have panick attacks and be have bad behaviour because we don’t have human rights and we should be aloud to because it’s our body and our life and if your child goes to this school and they have a bad day most of it isn’t there fault it’s the schools. so if you need toilet walk out of lesson. if you get shouted at for no reason shout back. we have rights!!
school is over all terrible school rules are stupid and extreme few of the leader members of staff are not fair to the kids over all i think its a rubbish school dont do what they are meant to for the kids
My daughter is 13 and for the last 2 years she was bullied by several girls in the school because of her weight myself and her dad went in to try and resolve this and we were promised things would be sorted , but instead it got worse there bullying policy is not worth the paper it is written on ,and one of the teachers just can’t even be bothered to teach his subject maths so he would down load work sheets with the answers , she was then off for a couple of months and was told they would help her catch up she is still waiting , I would not recommend this school for any child all they care about is how the kids look and the clever kids so your kids will try there hardest and not get anything back , and if they suffer with there mental health your on your own the list could go on but what’s the point they don’t give one .
My daughter and I do not rate this school one little bit she started getting bullied name calling about her weight I took it to Ellie’s year but nothing was getting done it was just before xmas and ellie had an appointment at hospital were we were told she was very I’ll and doing out she was making her self sick I spoke to our a counsellor and she was rushing over to the hospital as it was serious , I contacted westlakes and asked what could be done and the answer was she was
Staying for a few weeks and they would help her when she gets back which they never did and still expected for her to do her exams. The one that has concerned me the mist was her maths as they were just quiz sheets of Google so the kids could cheat But for one right and he said if she didn’t try harder she would get a head of year and behavioural points on which he did even messaged head of maths to change her sets and yea once agin let down big time ,
I hope when Ellie goes to energy coast utc they will get and understand ellie and if not they can work on things .
If you are just Average or slow you get no recognition all all which is unfair to lots of kids .the only police that is followed about their uniforms .
this school is the worst I have ever been to. First of all I didn't go here through year 7-11 but I did sixth form. The teachers made me feel like everything was my fault and when I would ask for help they would do it in such an aggressive way and give me vague answers to my questions. As much as sixth form is an independant learning experience thats what it is as a whole, you have to do everything on your own, even learn the content on your own. might as well just grade your own papers at that point.
oh, you have late work, hell will reign down on you but don't fret as the teachers can take all the time they need to get work back to you, only when its conveinent for them.
I have multiple accounts on which the school has failed students.
dont make the mistake of sending your child here, or in my case choose to go here.
