DO MOT

If you value your freedom and mental health do not come to this sixth form. The environment is suffocating. All this school cares about is grades and blazers and that’s not even an exaggeration. If you do good on your exams great perfect maybe you’ll thrive, however if you don’t, you are forced to give up ALL your free periods to work in a silent computer room. Not to mention you are in at half 8 every single day and not allowed to leave site before 10:50. If you do, detention. It’s mad how you can be a fully grown adult in detention. Being forced to give up all your frees to work in school might work in theory however the school does nothing else to help, sure some teachers put on support sessions but that’s it. If you have to give up your frees why would you not get more support? I’m seriously considering dropping out at this rate due to the suffocating environment, it really is like being a year 7 again except with the stress of a levels. We all know the only reason this is happening is to make the results good to give the school a good reputation when in reality I wake up full of anxiety and dreading the day ahead. It really needs to do better for the sake of its students. Please don’t come here if you want any sort of freedom.

Don’t go here

They say they want you to do well, however, say you forget a pencil or calculator in an exam. They have a whole massive tray at the front full of spare things to lend out. Yet they don’t? They go so far as to specifically tell people not to give these students anything. I get it you have to be prepared but everyone occasionally forgets something and it shouldn’t be the end of the world. Overall very bad place to attend (just my opinion)

Bad Experience

This school, academically, is okay. Not the “sent from God” school it apparently wants to be seen as. My experience was overall okay but on the odd occasions where I was picked on, what did the school do? Nothing. Bullying and harassing messages are labelled as “girl drama” when in fact it goes deeper than that. There is more punishment for being 5 minutes late due to a late bus than homophobic bullying. There are a few teachers who are outstanding, for example, the whole history department are angels but this does not cancel out the fact that everyone seems to care more about grades than mental well-being. I get it, grades are important, but when it’s at the expense of mental health and causes multiple students to hate coming to school, it’s a problem.

The sixth form is awful too. We’re treated like year 7s. So much emphasis is placed on “independent learning” to the point where it seems like the teachers are unapproachable if you need help. Of course there are a select few teachers who are angels, for example, the head of chemistry. We are taught the same PSE every Friday that we have heard since year 7. For example, healthy eating. I think sixth formers should know about 5-a-day by now. Less emphasis should be placed on these subjects and onto more serious ones, for example, taxes, how to rent or buy a house, how to deal with safe sex. Things that actually apply to us.

Overall, the subject lessons can be very helpful and interesting, but the school environment as a whole needs serious improvement as soon as possible.

Do not attend

This is a terribly damaging environment for young people. No support around mental health or additional needs. The teaching and learning is atrocious. Pupils teach themselves. Mocking and disgust by by teachers if you are performing below a 7 in any subject. There is no compassion or care shown to students. It's an exam factory. That's all. I would not send any child. Glad that I can managed to survive...just. But the school did damage my self esteem and confidence.

Urmston grammar

The school itself isn’t a great environment to be in. If you get anything less than a 7 in terms of coursework or exams you’re made to feel like you haven’t done very well at all and that you need to improve immediately. I understand that the school has to maintain a certain expectation from students but to ridicule them over not getting top grades isn’t very fair in my opinion. Half of the teachers can’t teach let alone control a class. Over the years at the school on several occasions teachers haven’t even bothered to turn up to lessons. Whilst covid has been going on they have cared more about whether you wear your mask properly or not more than anything else. A lot of teachers have taken it over the top and screamed at kids for not wearing one even though they don’t feel comfortable doing so. The only positive i can say really is the maths department who have some great teachers who are always nice and are always there to help.

Don’t care about anything other than grades

Recently some girls in the school organised a peaceful protest against sexual abuse and violence by writing “no means no” and “not asking for it” on their hands and legs but the school deemed it too disruptive to the year 11s and 13s to go ahead and attempted to stop the protest (it went ahead anyway). This is so ridiculous because the girls (and some boys) were simply showing that any form of sexual assault is not ok which I think many would agree with but this school did not want that happening. I was so lost for words when they attempted to stop it because why would they not want to show support for sexual harassment victims? Clearly shows they have little care for individuals but instead for arbitrary numbers and percentages.

I'm grateful to be here, but I still have issues

At this school, they only care about our grades. The mental health "support" available to me made me feel severely uncomfortable, and I felt like I could only trust one teacher. They make us feel like failures if we get anything below a 7 at GCSEs, and I was literally on the verge of a breakdown this morning over it.

Bullying is an issue I've not experienced personally, but have heard from other students that it isn't handled appropriately. Some students use slurs, and a white teacher said the n word when reading a book.

Also, the food is concerning. I remember my friend having bought a mouldy piece of toast. This is not acceptable.

The DT teacher cannot teach. He is a lovely man, but he cannot handle a class. Students are able to leave class without him noticing, and he practically does the work for us. He does not teach us what we need to know, and then gives us sheets to fill out.

However, we do have some amazing teachers. The arts departments in the school always do amazingly, and I am happy with my current English, chemistry and maths teachers, as I do believe I am learning something.

I would not recommend the school

I would not recommend the school as it was very un-supportive and was not good at dealing with mental health issues, bullying, or racism. The school only cared about people doing well academically.

My experience with Urmston Grammar School

This school made my life very miserable because of the way it defended the actions of bigots and didnt provide me with any support emotionally or mentally. This school may call itself a prestigious grammar school that achieves great results however the things they sacrifice for this to happen in the process I think is cruel. Students are made to feel useless just because they aren't achieving 7,8 and 9's when in fact this shaming pushes students the other way making them perform worse. This institution also wipes all individuality out of its students and makes anyone who attempts to express themselves feel grossly uncomfortable. In general this school is not a positive environment for pupils and in the end creates an environment where students can't thrive because of its outdated thoughts and narratives.
