Appalling school. It was the worst decision, to send my son there. At the open evenings, it's sold as a progressive, positive experience, where children will learn engineering skills. In reality, poor equipment makes this difficult, and forget the promise of welding. That just doesn't happen at all. There is rarely a day, when I don't get a text informing me that my son has a detention. You may think he's a bad child, but actually he only had two in his previous school. At utcn, forgetting your green pen alone, will land you in detention. It's a constant nightmare. My son has had a full day of isolation in a cubicle, for simply asking a perfectly serious "what happens if" question on a search engine, just because the subject matter was about security. This school is run as a fascist state, preparing drones for the corporate world. There is no encouragement of debate or creativity, which would be great in an engineering school. They simply want to prepare the next generation of slaves.
Save yourself the humiliation of having to move back to your previous school, when you realise the grass isn't just not greener, it's actually AstroTurf.
Fantastic school, decent teachers, an alright behavioral system, everyday is different and it's like one big meme,as they say if you dont laugh you cry but at the UTCN you will laugh, make friends and receive a good even specialist education only one problem and that's the toilets as some student dont seem to be potty trained but otherwise a fantastic school especially for anyone engineering focused.
Teachers are mostly passionate about their subjects and willing to help students if they put in the work. Management could be a lot better in how they handle things. For example, myself and many other minority students have reported harmful and discriminatory behaviour from other students, with little being done to resolve it, even an instance of physical abuse of a transgender student went unpunished. They are dead set on business attire at sixth form, going so far as to disallow students from wearing clothing that alleviates gender dysphoria if it means the student will not be wearing a suit. I got the academic support I needed and achieved amazing GCSE scores, the teachers are mostly amazing at helping out academically, but the environment could definitely be improved.
I got what I needed from this school.
if you’re looking to use all of their engineering equipment, you will be disappointed as you use less than half at a GCSE level.
You get a lot of pastoral support if you ask for it which is also a plus.
Amazingly equipped engineering department a some of the staff are amazing at teaching with others often lacking in people skills and a professional manner the school management prioritises money and reputation over the well being and education of its students
