Do not send your kid here.

Well, this school is genuinely a hellhole. They say they allow every pupil to reach their true potential, but while I was there, I was depressed, every test I did I was at best average and at worst terrible. I changed schools and am now predicted a 9 taking GCSE maths and fm a year early and predicted a 9 in everything else aside from English. My only suicide attempt came from my 2 1/2 years at this school, and the very second I left, my panic attacks magically disappeared. They labelled me as “average or below average intelligence” and now, without even studying, I’m the top pupil in almost every subject in one of the most prestigious schools in Dorset, and I know for a fact that every person even in second set in my school would be incomparably better than anyone from that school, because I’ve been at both schools. The teachers don’t care, the school has a permanent odour of vapes, and there’s cameras in all the toilets. Not only have my grades significantly improved, making me just a few marks off the maths olympiad when I was severely ill, I now am the most mentally healthy I have ever been, or at least can remember. Thanks Twynham, thought you were supposed to be the best school in Dorset.

hell on earth

Coming from a current y11 student...
This school will make your kid want to die. It used to be a good school for my few months in yr 7 (before lock down) but then completely went down hill.
The teachers genuinely do not care about anything but looking good in front of visitors, ofsted etc. Most teachers (especially the higher up ones) will talk down on you and say the most backhanded, hateful things towards you and then excuse it as "correcting the student". They will purposely say cruel and harsh things towards students and literally scream at students but then be confused as to why they are upset and don't want to attend classes anymore.

Not only that the toilets at the school are below the human minimum. There is only ONE girls toilet with barley any cubicles and 1 boys toilets and then a horrible unisex toilet. Not to mention all the toilets have uncomfortable cameras in the sink area and don't have doors to enter the toilet area but instead an open wide entrance for everyone to look in. Also 90% of toilets don't even have toilet seats, that includes unisex and girls toilet! And i understand this is students doing so however it is mainly the younger years and the teachers don't even care one bit. We have had no toilet seats basically this whole year at school. Another point is that male and female teachers will rarely let girls go to the toilet, they will literally scream no in your face even if its an emergency. Teachers will stand in front of the toilets and refuse entry for students, even if its break or between lessons. Its a literal human right that they are taking away.

There is so much to say about this dump of a school. They dont care about mental health, your feelings, the fact were all just kids?? Overall i heavily do not recommend this school at all, its good for some people but from what ive seen the majority of people HATE IT. 0/10 school, even avonbourne is better.

Worst school ever

This is the worst possible school you could ever send your child to, there okay I guess academically but any issues you have they just overlook and basically tell you to just deal with it. It is appalling how they treat students and how they make students feel. They have no consideration what so ever and are just point blank rude. I wouldn’t have dreamed of sending my child here is I know it was going to be this bad. People are better off without twynham school, in my opinion it should be shut down for good.

Bad school !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This school never understands or listens to the students.they care more about there grades than there mental health. Coming from a student I have never ever felt so unsafe and anxious in the outside world.the teachers here are absolutely horrible and have no consideration whatsoever. If I were a parent who cared about there child I would not send them to twynham school.

How it’s all gone downhill!!!

Alright for the first few years, however I am in year 11 and and it’s the worst time. Can’t blame it on exam season either, it’s the school. You aren’t allowed inside at break or lunch, even in rain or cold weather, and yet there isn’t any seats or anything outside. Most of the teachers have left/ are leaving so we are stuck with either no teacher turning up, or a supply teacher doing nothing which does not help us as year 11’s. They do assembly’s and talks about mental health and how to cope with revising but continue to tell us we will fail unless we do minimum of 4 hours revision every single day. They also say that we can go to student support for help with stress or any issues yet they are always too busy and full prioritising younger years so we are just forgotten. And not to mention how the teachers are not encouraging, or helpful, or even take an interest in the students. As I mentioned, all of the good teachers have left due to the new headteacher who has made the school go really downhill, and therefore any teachers who actually cared and we relied on, are gone. If you ask any twynham students of year 9, 10 or 11, they can all positively tell you that the school is rubbish, we are forgotten about and only younger years are prioritised.

Worst secondary school in Dorset

Teachers pray on every tiny thing you do wrong. Students vape smoke weed and do drugs and are completely toxic towards each other and adults don't care

Second review

Hi. I previously wrote another review, but I'm taking another look at this school and as a student, I'm just disappointed.

I got a lunchtime detention for running in corridors ONCE. Some of the teachers are unnecessarily strict. The rules are stupid, and the rules that actually make sense are almost never enforced. Honestly, you'd probably get a longer detention from being punched than for punching someone in this school. When people who they have high expectations for do one bad thing the get a detention. What happens when people who repeatedly to bad stuff do something else bad? Nothing.

Some of the teachers are really nice, but if you get the wrong teacher you'll hate the subject. I personally hate English now, which I used to like because my teacher is extremely annoying and strict. The 2 stars I'm giving are generous.

The subjects overall are slightly below standards except for art, where they expect us to be Leonardo Da Vinci reincarnated or something. History, R.E and Spanish/French all have actually challenging standards. In maths, I literally have to read math books in class to learn from it. Nothing against my maths teacher but everything is too basic. There's been a false alarm and an actual problem in the past ~3 weeks and the fire alarm actually didn't work during the actual problem. I have nothing against the nurses there; they're good but it doesn't matter because they're not allowed to pull off basic medical procedures except in an emergency.

The only fun place left except for the music room is the field, and I got told by a teacher that we're not allowed to run there? They just make up rules as an excuse to punish students. The amount of homework is ridiculous and we don't even learn anything from the tedious and repetitive homework. We get a 60 minute detention for missing 3 pieces in one half-term. Just so you know, one half-term here is usually 7 weeks(35 school days and 49 days counting weekends). 3 pieces of homework in 49 days, or 1 piece missed per 16 days, and what do you get for bullying someone repetitively after excessive teacher interference (which is actually hard to do because the teachers almost never care)? The same amount of time.

I saw one of the teachers pick up a piece of litter with whatever it is and when they dropped it, they just didn't care. They saw that they dropped it. This school may act like it's exceptional, but it's very much not. And remember the English teacher I mentioned a long time ago? She isn't even that good at English.

I've seen her make basic mistakes. Also, the fact that she asked one of us to come up and write the word apostrophe on the board and when I did (I was the only one who put my hand up) the class acted like I just wrote Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. This was in year 8. Year 8s were surprised that I could write apostrophe.

Overall, if you want to send your kid to a good school where they won't be depressed and stressed, choose the Grange. It gets higher test scores on average, they're better at sports and it's better in a lot of other ways I don't want to get into because of how long this already is. If you read this, thank you so much.

Best and worst years of my life

I am a former student. I suffered from extreme depression during my time with multiple suicide attempts and i never had a stable home. My only stable home was twynham. They were supportive but i had to fight for the support that i needed. I am gay and non binary and i’ve had some teachers not respect my pronouns and i paraded a pride flag around school and one of the teachers told me that it was inappropriate and something the school won’t tolerate. However other teachers are the sweetest humans on the planet and will jump over mountains for their students. Handling of any student conflict was poor it led to months off school. During exam periods they will put insane amounts of pressure on you but never show you how to revise properly. Senior leadership are unhelpful and homophobic. Assemblies felt like twynham propaganda what a waste of my 20 minutes every monday morning. Twynham has exception teachers with such good intentions but it’s the rest of the school that lets it all down. It looks pretty as a school but it puts unreasonable pressure on students mental health which lead them down a path of bad mental health.

Slightly below average

I'm going to be honest. The rules in this school are stupid and the punishments are way too strict. You can get a 15 minute after-school detention for wearing the wrong uniform 2 times. Might just be me being bad at anything artistic or the school, or both, but their expectations for art are way too high and all they tell you is to just do it with occasional help if you are doing nothing at all. In other lessons, they are teaching fairly on-level stuff but even though they're usually strict, they barely care when someone constantly starts fight with people. Not going to say who it is, but they got a one week suspension. Summary:Academically it's on-level except for art, harsh punishments aren't used enough (like 1 half-term suspension, 1 year or even being expelled, like the aforementioned person should've been). Too much homework (around 45 minutes a day) and people in this school are sometimes just downright violent and aggressive. Teachers only care about smart students and don't do much to help struggling students, most of the time nothing and that's everything about this school. Thank you for reading.

A bad 5 years to say the least :/

In terms of academics, they are a fairly average school. You can do well if you apply yourself but they won’t go out of their way to help you improve. Typical state school in terms of study, teaching was hit or miss, some utter gems and some teachers were appalling individuals.

The environment and culture their is authoritarian to say the least (in terms of students and rules) They have a serious bullying problem and the power dynamics between students was shocking. Bullied for 4 of the years while I was their by students and teachers, senior leadership never dealt with it or even cared. The teachers were more concerned with strange uniform rules (having to wear your blazer in class when it was 30‘c) and checking logbooks signatures than developing young people and providing them with the skills to compete in the modern economy

I came out with decent GCSEs (by no means amazing) but was always quite good at school. College was absolutely incredible compared to this place, really put twynham into perspective. I suppose Im grateful for the battle scars from my time here but I really left ill-equipped for the real world as twynham is so large and has a distinctive culture, it prepares you for a life in academic institutions and nothing else. Personal development classes were shocking with some dreadfully uninformed drug use and sexual Health information.

Management and admin was also really chaotic and head of years were delegated too much power which lead to strange inconsistencies in rules and the whole heggarty situation really does shine a light on some of poor staff background checks within Leadership. They focus on PR and image more than actually focusing funding into areas of improvement. Still milking their off-season outstanding rating from back in 2013. it’s really wierd as they have a fantastic reputation locally but it’s built on fabrication and the school is nothing like it portrays.

The mental health support for typical students was non-exsistant, tutor sessions everyday we’re typically just registers or the odd presentation. Students are put under immense pressure without given the resources or guidance to improve. Their was a suicide in my year at the school after mock exam season (probably unrelated) but after the mock exams which the teachers had universally inflated the grade boundaries to lower everyone’s grades so they felt they needed to work harder.

Don’t go to this school

they don’t care

they don’t care abt the students they don’t listen... they might be good when it comes to academics but when it comes to making sure their students are okay or making sure their students aren’t overwhelmed or making sure their students have good mental health. they fail miserably at that

Amazing!

School is amazing! The SEN department especially now Mrs Miller has taken over! The staff really care but they struggle as there is not enough funding for anything! I have an EHCP and although they don’t fulfill it, they try their best to do what you need! Academically they support you brilliantly!

I’m not going to say they are perfect, but they are a brilliant school for me.

Bullying and large amounts of homework aside...

I was bullied at this school my entire time there and they didn’t do anything, and my friends had similar experiences - one actually moved school because of it. I feel they didn’t accommodate my disability as much as they should have, and some of the teachers were really unfair with the amount of homework they gave (I personally had 7-10 pieces a week, and that was just KS3) However, there are a few really good teachers who made learning actually fun, and there were a few lessons I genuinely liked.

Absolutely rubbish school

Absolutely shit. Never gave me support (SEN) and told me I would fail all my lessons. Went to a new school and passed 5 GCSEs in a single year of learning because I learnt nothing at this school. Never go there is you have SENs or if you don't. They wont take you seriously and, even if you have an EHCP, they will not follow it.

Okay.

A good school , a few issues with bullying (there is also rasist and homophobic comments made in class) however on teaching I think that it is at a okay level.
