I went to this college and finished this year, my experiences were okay but there were some major issues with both quality of teaching and the handling of bullying from other students. While I admit that there were some accomodations provided to me for my anxiety, I was still picked on consistently by the year 12's for sitting in the area for quiet students and studying. Students are often unfriendly and aren't afraid to pick on you for differences, such as gender expression, sexuality and disability. This isn't often handled by staff, rather staff will ask you about how you caused your own bullying, engage with picking on you themselves or flat out not do anything. Not a good college to consider if you have mental health issues.
For quality of teaching, especially in the history department, often teachers will randomly be absent, or are very late to lessons, then proceed to not teach anything for the two hour sessions. Sometimes teachers would spend the entire lesson discussing football or other activities, resulting in you receiving no study material from lessons and having to go out and learn the content by yourself. It felt like most of the subject was self taught, and the areas that were taught to us were not of any aid in the final examinations. We were informed repeatedly that an area we were studying would most likely not be on the exams and thus we shouldn't study it, and yet it showed up as two major questions in the final paper, resulting in many students reporting being annoyed or that they would fail. The same teachers would often encourage or spend most of their time discussing with the loud or disruptive students, again meaning we wouldn't learn anything, rather just listen to bigoted ideas from male students.
The art department is generally disappointing and there isn't much room for those who are interested in creative subjects, all extra activities provided were about languages or sciences. If you make suggestions for clubs, these clubs being mandatory for the first year I went here, they often won't be considered and you're left to study or do nothing for the rest of the year.
Generally, I would not recommend this school.
school is absolutely vile, these teachers do not know any ways on how to communicate with there students my baby got sent to this school and the amount of things I was hearing back made me absolutely boil up with anger, he’s currently in sixth form and there still treating all these students like children and not adults, school seems very racist to certain ethnicities aswell I do not recommend any parent to let there child go to this school or even attended the sixth form very disappointed and avoid the receptionist ladies at all cost.
terribel school do not recommend people gets bullied and when we tell the school nothing gets sorted out they ingore the person getting bulleid and treat the bully bad staff swearing at students whats not ok do not recommend to send ur child here
Horrible school, horrible teachers, really affected my mental health badly to the point where i didn’t even feel like getting up in the morning do not care about students mental health or feeling and ridiculous rules. making children feel like absolute sh**!!! teachers do not care about bullying as they bully students themselves and seems like a prim and proper school but it is not the secrets instead of investigating into students behaviour and their mental health issues they shove them into the iu or into that bosco labeling them as ‘naughty kids’
Could be better, teachers especially with the way the handle bullying and racist and homophobic accusation and accusations students file against other teachers etc .otherwise all good tbh .
i go to this school and have been bullied since my first step into the school. i highly don’t recommend at all. they don’t help you with anything until they finally see that it’s escalated a lot more. some of the teachers have no clue what they’re even doing as well, yet they expect “good” grades.
What ever you hear from this school is just fake. I went to the school and they just like to sweep everything under the carpet. They are known for being the best in Bolton but I can honestly tell you loads of parents and students will disagree.
I was bullied, the things they did to me were awful and all Thornleigh would do is put my in isolation and tell me and my parents it was for my own safety. This went on for a very very long time my mum would ring up everyday begging them to do something but all they’d do is put me in isolation all day everyday. I was in year 10 at the time and the bullies were in year 11 (last year) so obviously the deapty head who is now the head, who is the problem, was worried about them failing their GCSEs because they were to fixated on me one day they were all in her office and I walked in and asked if I could join the conversation because it was obviously about me and we need to get things sorted. She then accused me of locking her in her office and being threatening which is a lie! (Anyway the lock on her door is literally like a bathroom door lock so if I did lock it she could of just twisted it back open) then she expelled me.
A few weeks prior to this the bullied came to my class to cause trouble and the teacher walked me to my dad and said “no matter what gets said, she’s not done anything wrong” this implies to me that he knew she was searching for a reason to get rid of me out of the school and that teacher knew it. There were so many incidents they tried to blame me for one was when I was walking out of the canteen a big group of the students came over and started being verbal then I walked away with my friend so they started throwing food at me and then pulling my hair - I got the blame!! My mum demanded she sees cctv but the answer was no, my mum then said she would get the police and I’m pretty sure they told her they didn’t have it anymore. ANOTHER THING they forged my mums signature lol.
