I have never seen such a bad school in my life. The way the staff handles things, the way they treat the students. Don’t even get me started on the bullying. I’m surprised nothings been done about this because I sure I’m not the only one who thinks the school is awful.
Ever since and even before the pandemic this school has had multiple different head teachers and it has gone incredibly down-hill. There seems to be no sort of order in the school. The teachers seem to care more about student’s appearances rather than how they are doing both mentally and in actual lessons themselves. Work students submit can, in some cases, take several weeks to be marked and additionally have no sort of helpful feedback to improve their work. The toilets are filthy, can spend weeks with horrible stains on the floors, walls etc. Doors from some toilet cubicles have been completely removed, and the others are broken and don’t have locks. The food is incredibly overpriced considering it’s quality, and that has been brought up before in student councils but completely ignored- no changes. This school seems to preach about changing for the better and listening to student voices and yet when it comes down to it, nothing ever changes. As well as this, some class rooms literally have parts of the ceiling missing, moulding or leaking and doors kicked in, tables with chunks missing and broken chairs- and then others are brand new? Why can the school not afford spare stationary but can afford whole new blocks? Why not take care of the old ones which are in terrible condition? I feel the teachers need more training too, some of them completely have no sort of control over the classroom and would rather bicker and argue with the class for the whole lesson time instead of working- this is especially harsh on those who are getting near to their GCSE’s. Would not recommend sending your kids to this school.
A terrible school. I have 2 children that attend here(unfortunately). Incompetence flows through the entire school and comes right from the top. From mistake ridden email shots to uncaring teachers to bullying, if you're reading this and wondering whether to send your child to this school, I implore you to think again!
absolutely awful disgusting school. teachers are careless, insensitive, rude and nasty. do not care about anybody with mental health problems at all. teachers don’t even teach properly and refuse to explain to you if you ask !! the only thing they ever buy is books instead of preparing their disgusting broken toilets etc… communication is the worst thing i’ve ever seen in my life. also horrible towards kids with disabilities. don’t do anything about bullies either. they don’t do anything about kids that do drugs on school grounds and outside of school or only suspend them for a day or 2 even when selling to year 7s. they do nothing good for mental health and the system as a whole is awful. they praise the bad kids and give them gifts for just showing up and are horrid to the good ones. teachers are creepy and inappropriate to female students. so many complaints for this school. outdated and unfair rules. lack of food and overpriced. teachers insult kids and make fun of their home life and how they were raised. way OTT punishments. care more about if you have a tie than if a student tries to kill themselves. do not go here
What can I say about this school huh? Too much. I’m going to try to keep it brief but I still have a lot to say and a lot of anger that has built up over the years from going here.
The worst thing about this place is the social environment and the way it creates racist, homophobic and misogynistic bigots. I’ve heard students say slurs in the corriders of which teachers saw and did nothing about. This is a very white school due to the area honestly, I STRONGLY recommend not going here if you’re a POC. The school fails to target issues of bullying, racism, misogyny, homophobia and transphobia. I have a friend who goes to the sixth form and they told me they had to have an assembly for the sixth formers about sexual harrassment against women because it was that bad. The SMSC sessions brought up to discuss these included: an SMSC session of which we discussed different slurs and why they shouldn’t be said; however, the slurs were permitted to be said by students and staff during this session which was widly inappropriate. A white teacher who covered this SMSC for my tutor group said the N slur with a hard r which was not at all needed to discuss the horrific history of the N slur. There was also an SMSC session on ‘sexualities’ which was basically just an education on the LGBTQ+ community which got definitions of some sexualities wrong, most notably, asexuality. It was clear they didn’t do much research into these topics and how their discussion may affect individuals affected by these topics which ultimately made some of these SMSC sessions borderline disrespectful and offensive.
They completely disregard the opinions of students. They would ask for our opinions on changes to the school which most students wouldn’t want but they would do it anyway. Such as the situation with the grey blazers, the year 11 before me all voted that they didn’t want the grey blazers and that they wanted to keep the black cardigans that previous year 11s had. Their wishes were ignored and they implemented grey blazers. I also heard from somebody in my computer science class who had a brother who went to the sixth form, that they ignored the students desire for study leave so they could go home if they had no lessons. A student started a petition of which most of the sixth form students signed and a teacher said they would give it to the somebody to be considered, but they put it in the bin instead. Whilst I was there they implemented these stupid rules, like taking your bag off in the corridor and taking your stuff out before entering the classroom. This rule, by the way, I had never met a teacher who was able to explain the reason for this. With all due respect they may have rectified these weird rules now as they were put into place by the headteacher at the time in response to the bad ofsted report. They destroyed the pastoral system which was one of the two positive things ofsted listed in their last report.
Teaching is varied. Some teachers are good, some teachers aren’t and the quality of teaching is ok from my experience. They will support you if you struggle with anything. Personally, I didn’t have many problems with teachers apart from those who failed to discipline students who continuously were disresepctful and rude to other students. It honestly appeared at times as if the teachers were afraid of them which led to harsh punishments on all of us because of the disruptions of a few students who were infamously terrible and hated by everyone.
This school contributed massively to my poor mental well being and my family actually pointed out how much better I was doing after I left in March 2020 due to the pandemic. I’ve even been told that I’ve never looked happier after leaving SHS. I couldn’t imagine going back and I’m not joking when I say that my time at SHS was the worst time of my life. This school was a really dark time in my life, don’t go here or send your child here and make it yours too. From what I’ve heard, the sixth form isn’t too different from the main secondary school either.
Also, as one of the positive reviews said about how the only people who found this school bad were ‘naughty’ and ‘claim to be bullied,’ I have to say that is a load of rubbish. I left this place with my head kept down, I focused on my grades, never got in trouble and never got a single detention in my entire time there. I left with 7s, 8s and 9s and I’m currently applying to study pharmacy at UCL and even I had a terrible experience at that school. However, I imagine that those who’ve left positive reviews probably attended when Liz Quinn was the headteacher and the school had an outstanding ofsted rating. Keep that in mind when you read their reviews, it is not reflective of how it was when I left last year.
The school is amazing. They go above and beyond, especially during the lockdowns. The only people that I find don’t like it here are the naughty children that, in the end, claim to get bullied. Great school. I came out of my GCSEs with As and Bs.
I’ve had very few problems here but I’ve heard of people experiencing worse.
There have been a few stupid rules brought in over the years but nothing too drastic and most of them fizzled out after a while.
Staff turnover is, however, ridiculous. The music department alone has a new teacher or 2 every year, if not more. And in 2 years of sixthform I had 10 different teachers total as 5 of them left in that time frame.
