I was the only ethnic minority in my class and I was faced regularly with comments from teachers and staff such as "This school isn't meant for people like you", "Don't you dare say I discriminated against you or I could lose my job". I was told I was a future terrorist and a thief when I was only eight.
Other parents told their children not to talk to me. Teachers would turn a blind eye to the bullying and social exclusion I went through. Some even told me it was my fault for being "weird". No help was offered to improve my social skills or reconcile with the other children. In fact, I was actively excluded from those programs.
Maybe it has changed since I was there. I don't know. All I can say is that it was a harsh, frightening and unwelcoming environment for me as a child.
