if a parent is reading this, just trust me and send your kid to a private school in newcastle. it's worth every penny.
I have recently come to learn of four nasty pupils (aged 15-16 so they should absolutely know better) harassing, spitting on, and pouring coke onto two disabled boys. I, and many others, are beyond appalled. In 2024, nasty individuals are still treating anyone at all different to them as nothing more than dirt on their shoe. People like this will continue to do nothing with their lives if they are unpunished. All they are right now is a nuisance to society and I am sure OFSTED would be very interested in this disgusting incident. Do not let your pupils continue to treat innocent members of the public so awfully. They need severe consequences if they are to learn. They also need to show real, full remorse.
If you care about the wellbeing of your child, especially if they are in any way alternative/different, or have special educational needs, do not send your kid here. I faced catcalling, name calling, and general dislike all through my time here, even for something as simple as dyeing my hair dark. I also needed accommodations for my exams and these were not sorted out until literally the day before exams started despite my parents and I discussing this with the school since the start of year 9. The building itself is not a nice place to be in, many of the classrooms have mild in the ceilings and the toilets were almost always broken or just straight up dirty. The school had many ridiculous rules, for example, not allowing jumpers to be worn unless they are under a blazer (if blazer is taken off then jumpers must also be removed??). There are a select few lovely teachers who are good at their job made my time at KEVI somewhat better, but there is a LOT of room for improvement from this school.
Math English and pe departments are ok. Music and Drama are bad as the departments are racists. The staff is badly trained on how to deal with self harm and suicide. Dt, food, ict are sexist. Safe guarding isn't done well. People are getting hurt at home and the safe guarding doesn't help. They also prioritise learning over mental health and the safe guarding time has said in assembly how school is meant to be a time for learning and how you need to come in every day aften if someone's had an attempt. They make counselling hard to get to so you focus on learning.
The humanities, science, pe, math, art, english, languages departments are all okay from my experience in year nine but the drama and music department are racist from my experience from year 10 and year 11. And the safe guarding team could always be better- they state how every safe member is good at recognising the signs of bad mental signs and are trained if someone came to them regarding suicide or self harm. That's a lie. From knowing suicide notes and seeing self harm, they report it but that doesn't nessacaily stop people from going on with their plan. And there isn't a check in after. The counselling are hard to get to.
When I was at Kevi they had an issue with students doing drugs which was reported and they did nothing. A teacher told a student to kill themselves and while it was reported the school took no action to correct their behaviour. The Art teacher also tore up students work and said Infront of everyone they should be ashamed of their work. I am so glad I left when I did and would not recommend anyone goes there. Lots of students I know regret staying on for sixth form and can't wait to leave
Some of the creative departments are racist, homophobic and sexist- through repeated comment that different teachers have all said in that department. Don't care about mental health, to the point where my best friend after an attempt came into school because he was scared of missing a day off and getting shouted at for lack of attendance. Some teachers overshare and make everything uncomfortable- I had a teacher who told the class when they lost their virginity. There's a lift for disabled people but it only goes to the second floor when we have four floors so not inclusive. Forced non Christians to go to church last year. But the design technology department is well maintained and the teachers are lovely and don't take it out on students when they feel bad, the art department is also good as they do non typical learning to include everyone with learning problems eg dyslexia.
If you have concerns about your child be careful how you approach kevi. It can turn all political very quickly as they are more concerned about protecting themselves than the welfare of your child.
As a student i understand many will read this and assume i am just a teenager hating school. Kevi has many issues starting with the lessons, kevi is fit for students who are academically gifted yet those who need help will struggle!Another issue is sexism throughout the school, with PE teachers taking boys pe more seriously than girls and many more.An issue that affects nearly all students is uniform. The school seem to despise the idea of individuality, i understand that piercings can be a safety issue yet when staff enter the building with many piercings and hoops it is just unfair. No hair dye, no nail paint,no pin badges on uniform! We even see issue withe drugs, vapes and cigarettes that the school appear to ignore.Students are constantly aware of drug issues throughout school yet staff ignore it.I wish the school would rethink how they go about these!
Kevi’s main issues
1.Some staff are blatantly sexist, which is gross to see at all within a education setting. Others can’t control the classroom(granted it is a highschool) and others don’t supply the learning needed for that class
2.The uniform is ridiculous and doesn’t accommodate for those who are less fortunate and can’t afford new trousers and skirts with the emblem on. Also staff are continually dress coding feminine people over masculine people which is gross to see. There is no accommodation for those with different hair types and also lengths.
3. Sporting outside of P.E , I.e clubs etc.. are fine for inclusivity but within the gym class their is again sexism. Fem people and girls are not allowed to do rugby and football because of their “sex” and “gender”, with teachers saying it is too dangerous for the classes to play them even though many remember playing in middle school at a club standard.
4.When COVID hit the school on the whole disappointed with limited help being offered and many students left in the dark (this was a very difficult and unprecedented time, and circumstances were very unusual.)
KEVI isn’t perfect, it’s not a bad school, the mental health advocacy is better but not great. Students on the whole can get a good education other than the issues above but the school does seem to value it’s grades over it’s students. The school needs to try and really advocate for a healthy positive and encouraging environment for students instead of one that pressures students to their mental limits to achieve slightly higher grades.
most of the staff seem to not care, only learn names of loud/popular students, terrible problems with drugs eg. dealers and drug related incidents within the school in school time, lacking in resources in all subjects, art department is shocking, worse resources than a first school. not enough space in the school and ridiculous rules. no individuality allowed, clearly a more results focused school than one that actually cares about its students.
Very good at teaching when you are actually at school but they do near to nothing when you are off needing to isolate or during lockdown. You will get more opportunities as a girl because in trying to give equal rights they do leave out boys a lot.
