Horrible students but great teachers

Don’t send your child to this school if you don’t want them to be bullied!

I’ve been at the de ferrers academy my whole education career and it’s been a roller coaster of an experience.
Y7 in 2019, started and teachers expected us to know our way around the academy on a very complicated map. I understand lockdown hit us in this time and it was hard but still.
Y8, put in a class dulling lockdown they no teacher could control.
Y9, Trent campus, just like my first year, no one helped me know my way around the building and an assistant teacher helped me. I was put into a mixed math class and the teacher did not help me one bit no matter how much I struggled.Classes were okay but no one helped me choose my options.
Y10, still in a mix math class and the teacher was nice but never asked me to answer a question or even look at me as I could not understand anything the man taught.
Y11, finally put into a foundation math set with a class that would not let the teacher even talk. However he did help me as he could see I wanted to learn.

Most children in the school would think they are hard and bully others. The school has quite a large amount of ethnics who would just assume we are racist towards them. English teachers would just focus on the smarter kids and not help the ones who struggled but really wanted to learn (like me). Most teachers were wonderful to me but didn’t really help me. I was coming down with really bad anxiety and someone spoke to me then never talked to me ever again even though I was really struggling. The catchment area was Horninglow though so I understand that most kids in the school were rough or ethnic and please do not take offence to that as it is the truth. One more thing I do not appreciate how teachers are expected to travel to different campuses every day throughout the day as it is wasting their fuel. Overall I will not be sending my future children to this school and would not Recommend you do the same.

this school sucks and it genuinely takes more than they can handle so they take the worst kind of people just because they want money.

The teaching staff throughout the De Ferrers Academy including the sixth form are excellent. There is a wide range of extra curricular activities to get involved with which is fabulous.
Overall this is a great school as long as you fit in their box. In my opinion some of the pastoral staff appear to care a little bit too much about the length of your skirt rather than your attitude to learning, effort and attendance!

In my opinion, de ferrers sixth form is a good school. Throughout my experience at the school I have met many great people and been taught by great teachers. The school isn’t perfect but I feel that on the whole, my deferrers life was good and I felt supported by staff.

Within de ferrers sixthform I have found the teachers, along with the standard of teaching to have had massive improvements from year 11 etc….
The teachers have become much more relaxed, and less strict, and care more about our opinions and what we think. I think the pressure put on us to do well isn’t too high, but it encourages me to try a lot harder than last year - allowing me to excel.
All of the teachers I have are lovely, and are definitely the best part about sixthform

The school including the sixth form have fabulous teaching staff. There are lots of opportunities for the children and young people to develop and thrive, there are many extra curricular activities to get involved with and the atmosphere is generally positive.

There are however pastoral staff who appear inflexible and unwilling to recognise what is in front of them and seem more focused on length of students skirts rather than 100% effort, attendance, attainment and achievements.

Overall a positive setting that I would recommend, if you’re willing to fit in their box!

One of the best additions at The deFerrers
Academy is the fantastic range of extracurricular activities which are offered.
From football teams to CCF, there are over 20 extracurricular opportunities for students to participate in. The deferrers PE department is a credit to the school, with every teacher having a passion for sports, and a wide range of experience participating in different activities. The PE departments motto is 'sport for all'. They aim to promote sport to students, allowing them to have fun with their friends, learn new skills and rules, whilst also remaining fit and health. The deFerrers PE department are excellent at recognising that not all students enjoy PE, and rather than disregarding this, they try to suit every students needs and help them to enjoy some aspect of PE. They often do this by casting a vote with students regarding which activity they would find the most enjoyable to do in a PE lesson. Students also require no previous knowledge or experience to participate in sport at the academy. This means that all students are able to get involved freely without the fear of 'not being good enough' for a specific standard. The school enters lots of local and national competitions every year which encourages pupils competitive spirits but also allows students to build discipline. The variety of competitions which the academy takes part in also allows students to gain experience competing against others, as this is an experience which some students do not have outside of school.

The deFerrers Academy is an excellent place to receive your education. The School environment is friendly and inviting, and aims to support students in the best way possible. The teachers at the academy are exceptional. Every teacher goes above and beyond for their students with the main priority of helping students to perform to the best of their ability. Teachers will do the absolute most to support students and will willingly give up their own free time to communicate with students regarding work and any queries or questions which their students may have. The teachers at this school deserve recognition!

The Deferrers sixth form academy. Firstly, the building. The building is brand new with the first time being used for a school year in September 2018, now in my experience in 2022-2024 i find the facilities to still maintain its excellent status which it promised to be back in 2018. Overall the school is clean and comfortable with plenty of space to house all the students and more. However, know where is perfect and the location of the school could be more desirable. It is located in not one of the nicest areas of Burton Upon Trent town where there is some activity that for a school area is entirely unacceptable. However I believe this can be overlooked as when you are in the building the environment completely changes and it is quite a safe, secure and mature environment.

Teaching. As an internal student, since year 7 I have always found the teaching to be an area deferrers excel in, and if utilised properly (more down to the student) the iPads, which are reasonably priced, can be a great help. Through my experience here there have been times where I have questioned the teaching sometimes being the person where I just don’t like them or the teaching has just been quite poor. But I feel like at every school you will have an experience like this as you will not like everyone and some methods of teaching. But overall I have found myself being happy with the teaching and most of the teachers I have encountered.

General student life. At deferrers sixth form you can leave the campus at lunch times and free periods given you have consent from parents which is great. The catering at deferrers I have always found quite poor with portion sizes being a dismal and getting drinks maybe like a coffee or a hot chocolate being more expensive than costa which is a joke to be honest.

Overall, I would give Deferrers a 3.5 stars, slightly above average but that is not an option so I have given it 4stars, as overall it is a lot more good than bad. And there are always areas to improve. If you did come to this school, if you didn’t do anything stupid you would have a very comfortable and enjoyable time here and I would definitely recommend it compared to over schools in the area which are quite poor.

To start off with, the de ferrers academy sixth form centre has incredible facilities. Catering to all in question, it includes; a gymnasium, a D&T room, a lecture theatre, art rooms and science classes in abundance. Not only are there a lot of classes to choose from, but there is also a variety of spaces or things to do during your free time. For example, there are plenty of quiet sitting areas where you can socialise with your peers, however, if this is not to your liking, during lunch and free periods, you don’t have to be within the school premises. All that it takes is an ID card to sign yourself in and out around these periods of free time. This school surely is the correct step into adulthood for these students.

If you are thinking of coming here then do. It is a great place to learn and there are majority great teachers. Psychology teachers are all superb however the business department i can not say the same for. The teachers in this department decide not to turn up to lessons and if they do majority of the time it is simply useless. Multiple times the teacher has had to be corrected and the slides that we go through are copied right out of a text book. There’s no need for the teacher to be there really as everything i am taught is in the text book provided for the school. Some of the teachers in this department do not know how to teach. However teachers such as miss Jenkins and mrs Beardsley are class. They actually make sense in the teaching and have a slide show but go off of the slide show to further develop our knowledge. Also, miss Newey is class. She teaches one of the hardest subjects around (economics) and actually makes it make sense.

If you’re thinking of coming here to study business, don’t. Teachers rarely bother to show up and when they do they’re clueless. The psychology teachers are excellent however; Miss Jenkins and miss Beardsley are legendary. Mr Burns the English teacher has truly reached the pinnacle of teaching, he’s the best teacher in the school and nobody comes particularly close apart from Mr Keene. If you get Mr Burns just thank your lucky stars, you are in for an exquisite school journey. The business department should be abolished and their wages should go into Mr Burns pockets. Mr Jones is also iconic, one of the kindest people and best teachers you’re going to find.

I love this school. The teaching staff are always coming up with new teaching techniques to make things interesting for the students. This has also proven to produce good grades at the end of the courses. It’s not perfect, but then again what school is. My personal experience has been perfect to set me up for my future life.

This school has been very helpful for me over the past 5 years I have attended. The majority of staff are very nice and welcoming and are there to offer support. The head of year team are extremely supportive and have took time out of their days to talk to me and offer external support. This school also offers so many opportunities for people. I would definitely recommend this school for students.
