I was a student myself here many years ago, I was treated horrendously by staff, the bullying I experienced was not dealt with at all, bullies weren'tpunished and i was told to accept it, my mental health took such a dive that I ended up having to leave mainstream school. Now I have my own children, my husband and I live in the village so we're currently sending our son here. He's only been there half a year but we're already in the process of changing that. Our son has experienced bullying and the school are failing him just as they once failed me. It's appalling that the very thing that happened to me 15 years ago is still so prevalent. I refuse to allow my child to be let down the way I was. I had a horrific time as a teen, self harm, suicide attempts, all of which stemmed back to the bullying I experienced at this school. You failed me nd you're not going to do the same to my son. I won't let that happen. You may have high grades and achievements but your school is entirely lacking in compassion and decency. It hurts me to read some of these other reviews, to hear CHILDREN admit this place drove them to self harm the way it once did me is heartbreaking. Nothing has changed in 15 years since I left and nothing ever will. You fail children.
if i'm honest, the corbet school is not all it claims to be.
results are okay but most teachers do the bare minimum to help students pass their gcses (some not even that) with only a few striving to help pupils gain enthusiasm for learning. because of this, most students are not encouraged to achieve their potential and can often underachieve, leading to a lack of ambition/drive and in the case of pretty much everyone, poor mental health. because of this work ethic, many teachers try to scare everyone away from failing instead of encouraging them and praising them. I say this because we are often presented with assemblies telling students how they will not be 'employable' if they underachieve, however there is a severe lack of motivation!! this leads to top students getting overwhelmed, stressed, and burnt out by the expectation to achieve the top grades that the school boasts about, and the lower students become unmotivated with the belief that they cannot improve or achieve - because the school seems to only care about the very top grades.
Everyone says this, but student support is terrible, they are unwelcoming and have on many occassions turned students away because either they go to student support 'too much' or their problems 'aren't bad enough.' they do nothing to stop harrassment and if they do, there is no support for the students who suffer from the consequences of other's bad judgement. I've heard of people being told that they're 'too old to be crying,' as well as the pastoral team outright ignoring some major issues. Sanctions are often ridiculous and unjustified. A boy once flashed my friend and I in class (no exaggeration.) and repeatedly harrassed and bullied many girls, however he only recieved a detention, whilst there are girls in isolation every day for wearing makeup to cover insecurities. This highlights the blatant sexism of the school on one of many occassions.
A small note about the PE department (to give the honest truth) there is plenty of extra curricular clubs (as sport is the only extra curricular that exists in the eyes of the school) so i will give them that, however there is a history of teachers entering changing rooms at innappropiate times, for example a male teacher a few years ago who entered the girls changing rooms, and even the female staff often enter and blatantly stare at people whilst they are getting changed into their PE kits. I am not making accusations, I am just raising the fact that most if not all of the students are very uncomfortable with this.
The school cafeteria is in an absolutely vile condition. For as much as the school preaches about nutrition, it is suprising that the food company does not reflect this in any way. The false advertising on the canteen walls paints a colourful picture of various different cuisines, herbs and spices, flavours that will keep students feeling full and ready for the day, however this is extremely misleading. The canteen has a humiliatingly low variety of foods. On the average day, the 'snack' selection served at 11.10 consists of bread that is translucent with butter and so under - toasted, one can almost see the wheat granules sticking out of it, alongside a suspicious looking jelly of some kind, a 'slushie,' (where is the nutritional value??) perhaps some very greasy looking sausage rolls, and thats about it. Lunch is even worse, its usually a choice between a burger, the meat of which appears raw and of a mix rather than stating what the meat product actually is, again a sausage roll, or if you're vegetarian or vegan, your only option is a cup of uncooked pasta with baked beans. The canteen is also very overpriced and there is not a lot of room inside for people to eat. Unfortunately, the queue to enter the cafeteria is worse than the food. Many students don't get inside until the bell has gone, as the queue is so chaotic as the teachers turn a blind eye to the raucous that goes on. The line is supposed to be single file but it often ends up as more of a bustling throng of students that stretch 10 people outwards horizontally. Oftentimes i've queued up with friends and witnessed people fighting, pushing people for mere sport, and have literally been cast off my feet and carried by the hoards of chaos. People trip over other's shoes, there is gum all over the wall next to the queue, there is food and water all over the floor, and the line moves at a snail's pace.
The Corbet School also has a large vaping issue and I have even witnessed a few students do drugs whilst in school or come into school whilst high. There is people who vape in class and on the bus but often nothing is done to stop it.
The toilet situation is beyond embarrassing, there is only about 9 toilets for boys and 6 or 7 for girls which are almost always in disgusting condition.
All in all, I tried to think the best I could for the Corbet School but with all the stress and burnout it causes, that is an impossible feat.
This school quite literally made me want to kill myself. I’m still suffering with the side effects to this day and even though I left with top marks I’ve never been able to use them due to the fact this school severely damaged my mental health.
This school dose not care at all about your mental health and well-being at all they really care about is grades and money plus teachers and teaching assistants will not stop leaving you alone. The canteen is rubbish and student support is bad they don't make you feel safe and they go around telling teachers your problems
Please don't go to this school even if it says it's the best in Shropshire it is not if u go it will be likely to have anxiety and depression.
This place is awful they do not care for you or your mental health they only care about good scores and results. Do not come here unless you want your mental health to fall into a ditch and not resurface.
Don't go to this school unless you want to commit self harm as in they end up making you become harmful.
All they want in the end is for the academic level to be sky high and they never listen to the students and what they actually need, student services are poor to the point that two of the student services team are having an affair with each other. The bullying level is really high and no one will do anything about it. If you want to come out with depression and A's then the corbet school is the place for you to go. They also supply a great group of perverts to touch and teach you.
They talk about how much they care about mental health but do next to nothing when it comes to dealing with it. Student support is pitiful, as if students have an issue with others, they submit a report so that faculty *might* do something about it. More to this, there’s a huge lack of lgbtq+ representation or education on minorities of any kind. Once, an assembly was given in which students were essentially taught homophobic slurs from 20 years ago (pansy, poof, all of which are extremely outdated) which most were previously not aware of, in an attempt to dissuade students from saying said slurs. As you maybe be able to figure out, this didn’t go smoothly or as expected. Anyway, I’m a student there, the moment you express yourself you’re punished and though they preach about individuality the moment you deviate from the path they want you to take or show any amount of personality you’re punished. They crush creativity, education system is broken and this school isn’t helping. 3/10 would not recommend.
Varied curriculum and educational opportunities, however the pastoral/student support team is inadequate and does not know how to deal with serious situations. There is a lack of staff who are qualified to deal with students mental health issues and often the school ignores situations such as bullying and will only address these things when they affect the schools image, for example lowering the average exam score. I believe that the pupils best interests are not paramount- rather the schools reputation.
Not the greatest school. All be it very academically successful and individual. It is filled with people all full with the same narrow mindsets. There is no diversity whatsoever.
