I was there a long time ago. Very much hope it’s improved.
I hope this school has changed since I left.
We were not taught. We were given a textbook to work to though and had to line up at teachers desk for marking once we had done 3 pages. Only 3 people allowed in the queue and as a well behaved pupil I was sat furthest from the teachers desk. Very rarely actually got to the desk and once went over half a term without any work marked. No one noticed.
Pretty much did maths and English only. No languages, arts or humanities, or even science, which is weird since we had to take national exams in that subject.
PE was pretty non existent. Occasionally we would get changed and go out for PE but usually in the first 10 minutes the naughtiest boy in the class would do something like throw a bat at the teacher and that would be the end of the lesson.
We also weren’t allowed to run at all outside during breaks.
Behaviour at the school was ignored, particularly the naughtiest boy because he was good at football so he got away with pretty much anything.
Most of the time half the class walked out of ‘lessons’ to go mess around in the toilet. Climbing up the walls was particularly enjoyable. Teachers either didn’t notice it didn’t care.
No having to sit in class and focus and no homework even in year 6.
School was easy and messing around with friends was fun, but it was a complete waste of 7 years and I tell you what, year 7 at the grammar school came as a big of s as shock!
I’m pretty sure I only got into grammar because my mum taught me to read and write, my parents provided lots of educational things such as books, encyclopaedias and educational games at home and I luckily enjoyed reading and was interested in learning about the world.
The only lesson I actually enjoyed was church teaching because the local vicar came once a week to teach this. He was a nice man who actually TAUGHT. Engaged with us. Asked us questions. Told people to sit down and concentrate.
Extra curricular activities were pretty much non existent. There was netball for the girls one night a week after school because a mum ran it. Football and cricket for the boys. No other options.
Moving into the new building during my time as a student did not improve the school in any way. It just took away the character and atmosphere of the old school and replaced it with something we all thought looked like tesco. At least the toilets there didn’t freeze in winter.
Like I say, I very much hope this school has changed for the better.
