I sincerely wondered if children of the minority gets the same treatment as their counterpart. My children gets suspended for littlest things whilst their fellow individual get to come to school unpunished. This started happening recently and I shall be taking the correct steps to ensure the appropriate punishment is apportioned correctly and fairly.
The Headteacher is never available for meeting.
My children are now beginning to think, the school system is not fair to them.
Suspensions are for grave offences! My son get punched and he gets to be the one suspended. My daughter had a fight with her friend outside school, she got suspended.
I will explore all means to ensure my children gets fair treatments.
I went to this school between 2014 and 2021 so experienced it as both a secondary school and a sixth form. My experience was overall positive - I had supportive teachers, made great friends and achieved excellent grades. During this time the headteachers were very involved and interacted constantly with students. My brothers still attend this school and I can say with all honesty since the new headteacher has taken over I have not heard a single positive comment.
One of my siblings is in sixth form and did not have a teacher for half of year 12 and didn’t even have a cover. Throughout year 10 my youngest brother had a constant change in teachers and there seemed to be very little communication between teachers and parents (constant miscommunication regarding homework and due dates).
It’s the first day of school and the entire sixth form was sent home at lunch time because in the 6 week summer holidays nobody thought to plan anything for them. He doesn’t even have a timetable. My brother is in year 11 and hasn’t even been assigned an English teacher - he is supposed to be doing his GCSEs.
The first day of school used to run so smoothly - receive timetable online or via the office before the first day so students know which room they are in for form. Everyone but years 7 and 12 used to have delayed starts to allow new students and teachers time to get used to the school. I can’t think why they changed this system as the queues in the morning were chaos. Today felt like the return to school was planned the day before. They didn’t have a single lesson - just spent the entire day in their forms.
It seems as though money has been spent in the wrong places - hardback planners with half the pages being entirely unnecessary (very little room for their timetables and lots of wasted space), a new uniform which works out more expensive in the long run and issuing pencil cases for all students (except the sixth form which feels as though it has been a second thought). The pencil case would be a great idea if they had told parents more than 3 days in advance of the first day that they were being issued - weeks after parents/students had paid out for their own equipment.
From what I am aware most of the senior leadership team are the same from when I attended so I can’t see why these changes were made. It seems as though the new headteacher has come in and not reviewed the current/old workings of the school and assumed the problems. Rather than focusing on new uniform (entirely unnecessary) or buying an expensive (and mostly useless) planner the school should be looking into how to retain teachers and student engagement.
If you had asked me to review this school just 2 years ago it would have been 5 stars all round, however it seems as though the school has tried to change the wrong aspects in an attempt to improve.
Shit school do not go here, my daughter struggled with bullying and and issues regarding self harm, the school never did anything when she wrote statements on the bullying and as soon as she was about to get counselling ,the teacher that actually helped her left the school, other teachers have a lack of respect and are overall useless in teaching ,none ever want to resolve problems and tell my daughter “try to ignore it” try to ignore it? Try to ignore the yelling at her, the bullying, the abuse she gets from other students? Id find that hard to ignore and id find it hard to learn if my teachers couldn’t control the class, the classes have been described as ‘zoo like’ too many times and I sincerely wish I sent my daughter to a different school
Horrible none of the teachers care don't get me wrong there are some lovely teachers that everyone loves and they deserve better but some of the teachers are just horrible they shout at you for no reason the teachers take stuff to there advantage and blame you for everything
Your not aloud in the building at all even if it's pouring with raid they tell you to go in the canteen and that's not a big place there's back to back tables taking up all the room
The only good thing in the school is probably the food
This is a great school. Really helped my daughter reach her dream of becoming a teacher. They helped her with gaining the required experience and grades to get into her choice of Uni. She left Uni with an honours degree in Primary teaching and became a qualified teacher with a great job by the age of 21.
Okay so, I have a Lot to say. The Years at the school were some of the Worst of my Life, although with some positives. They act like Student well-being is one of their main priorities yet either do nothing or barely anything to stop it; going “ don’t tell people to kill themselves online”, especially as you are talking to kids just saying don’t do something isn’t going to work.
Teacher-wise it is rather hit or miss- You could end up with Mr Carey ( who definitely deserves a raise *wink*) which is a great result, orrr you can end up with something else. It is basically like picking blind from a chocolate heroes box, you either get lucky or you don’t.
On top of that, Learning from the teachers is as hit and miss as the teacher you get. You will learn more from someone who seems excited and teaches in a fun enjoyable way (*Cough* Mr Carey) compared to someone who screams the entire lesson- I’m sure some of the ex students could definitely think of someone like that
You aren’t allowed to go inside so if you are in the middle of a cat 5 hurricane sorry kids, they are gonna force you to be outside. And when you bring in a coat or something that could possibly keep you warm, they will complain and say that it’s not in the uniform and to take it off whilst the teachers are sitting there in their winter coat, two scarves, full outfit.
The way days are sorted out is good though as it means there’s less knowledge to stuff down you throat like a baguette from the canteen that is filled with so much butter you could step on it and slide about on it. The food at Shoeburyness is alright, there’s things like paninis, pizza other , whatever random items they put there that are never bought.
Bullying wise, the school doesn’t do the right thing, for instance saying “ hey, saying that makes me sad, so don’t say it, want to be friends”, although to be fair some of the faculty there are quite chill.
The main good thing about it is that, at least it’s not the worst, you’re not going somewhere where the initiation is getting stabbed or worse.
Most of the Assistance teachers, for instance : Mrs Starling and Mrs Richardson. Are very good at their Job and what they do, especially as they have understand how to talk to and help children compared to one of them where I looked to the side near where my friend is and the person said “Do More Work, Write More, Do this’n’that, like honestly * insert member of staff” how the hell am I gonna have written 15 full essay paragraphs in the 2 seconds it has been.
I find that the expectations of the teachers and varying works are more solid than liquid in a way, it’s not able to flow fluidly whilst allowing for slight differences between people compared to “ okay 10 minutes for a full test , okay and done , if you are still writing Too Bad!! “ they screeched, laughing maniacally.
The teachers are dropping left and right , like 5-9 teachers dipped in one year alone. Some of the subjects don’t even have enough teachers to be qualified as one, they’re just weird clubs.
Although I have seen mixed reviews so hey, it must work for some, but not for the majority. Those people that enjoyed school are either lying to themselves or never had a single difficulty within their lives.
So generally as an overview:
Teachers are okay with some good ones.
Anything that requires the school to do something will require an intense and heavily hands on approach.
If you just want to be bullied instead of outright murdered , this is the priso… school for you.
No pastoral support whatsoever. Staff went as far as to call us names to each other regarding our issues. Blame other students for someone’s mental health problems. Most teachers are nice but that’s not enough - subject teachers are nicer than pastoral support which is silly.
This is a truly insightful and honest review from a current student at shoeburyness high school.
This school has many issues, in some regrades I would say it’s a shambles. I find this due not the tangible facilities but due to the incapable ability’s of some teachers there. I am astounded some of the staff even got jobs at Shoebury high as the word professional feels more like the opposite to how they conduct them self. Unfortunately the majority (although not all) of people who who act in this way tent to be in more senior positions.
I think the best word to describe the behaviour of some teachers is tyrannical. For example SLT member, Mr M Smith (assistant head) is a tyrant who believes he is better than everyone else, giving out orders like the students are part of the army. He has no place in a school setting, I find his behaviour worrying.
Another staff member, Mr Laurence, is a complete bully. He has no regard for student wellbeing and is very threatening to be around. He is about 6ft 4 and uses this to his advantage. Multiple times I have seen his blocking students and being threatening.
There are many other bad staff members but I feel my examples can’t begin to paint a Picture.
I’ve had an amazing experience here, the majority of teachers are amazing and super helpful and are always willing to help. I think the facilities are great, and the way the school handled the pandemic has been admirable. I think the fact that there’s only 3 lessons a day is amazing because you can learn lots in one subject without getting overwhelmed throughout the day.
School has no regard for well-being at all. I was at a crappy moment in my life and told my year manager about it but she did nothing about it - even applied for counselling twice throughout my last 2 years but was ignored.
Idk how some teachers were even hired ngl I don’t learn anything at all and there’s mud everywhere and nowhere to go when it’s cold and we get moaned at for it.
A decent school, however many of the teachers lack sufficient teaching ability. These being: Mrs parkes and Mr Allen. If im honest i have absolutely no clue how these people were hired.
Secondly, many of the teachers have a power trip and are just plain rude. Such as: Mrs. LaRoche, someone who is in a pretty professional position as head of the MFL department. She lectures students for half the lesson and then anyone who disagrees with her opinion on something is deemed wrong.
