This school has been very good. When we have had an issue the house office staff deal with it quickly and teachers are very approachable.
Education here is good and we have been provided with lots of updates on how our child is performing in subjects.
Lunch options could be better, there’s not much choice and my child will choose a fast food option whenever they eat a school meal.
Needs an overhaul, new rules, new structure, new management
There are some nice teachers here but unfortunately the bad outnumbers the good ten fold.
The head teacher is condescending and is rarely available. There is so much hate in this school from staff and students, it is not a good environment for any child. Every parent I have spoken to who has a child attending SVA, has had to deal with their child being bullied here and has had to deal with the fact that the teachers do not do anything about it, other than an educational assembly on how to act towards each other over and over again. Some parents have had to move their child/children schools, some have now started to encourage self defence, others have said they just tell their child to run away from the bullies as they do not want the problems that come from the teachers when they apply pressure for it to be resolved. One mum said she felt the more she asked for the bullying to be sorted the more her child was getting into trouble for nit picky things, that had previously not been an issue.
The school needs a total overhaul, new rules, new management and a new structure or they need to be held accountable for the emotional and mental impact that this environment and behaviour is having on our children.
On a side note I was disgusted to see a lot of the children smoking and vaping when leaving the school by near the leisure centre, when I collected my daughter this afternoon. It’s so close to the school yet no one seems to stop them, I think it’s because there is so many of them smoking that teachers feel intimidated to tell them to stop.
Sawtry is a decent school. The food is average and the teachers are good..
The facilities are good and there is plenty to do at lunch and break. I would recommend this school and I would say it’s the best in Cambridgeshire by a mile.
There is a lot of homophobic and transphobic comments, and some times actions, that go on around the school site; and the staff do very little, if they do any thing, about it. The most that will happen is an assembly on being a decent human being.
The other day, my mates and I were just trying to eat lunch in peace, when a year 7 thought that it would be funny to spray us with his drink from around the corner of where we were sitting. Most of my friend group is a part of the LGBTQ+ community and some of them think that this was based on our gender and sexual identities, which is absolutely disgusting!
Not only this, but some people find it rather amusing to bring up some of mates trauma just to see them get visibly upset and not want to come into school, and yet, no matter how much this is reported to our house offices, NOTHING gets done.
On a lighter note, some of the staff members are incredibly sweet.
When I started crying because of the anxiety I had before an exam, one member of staff was helping me with extremely last minute revision, and helping me to calm down. I think that she is one of the kindest members of staff, and people on site. She is such an angel ❤️❤️
Also, some members of staff make jokes in lessons ( which are relevant to the content being learnt ) to help you learn the content, and therefore, making it easier to revise as you remember the kind of silly joke that they made in that lesson.
Overall, having some of the teachers being absolute saviours makes this place less of a living hell, especially with exam season so close, however, I won't be sad to leave in the next few months; I will only be sad that I won't be able to take these staff members with me to college ❤️❤️
Do not send your children here especially if they've had past trauma they're struggling with mental health because of, physical or mental disabilities, etc. I sent my child with a physical disability in their legs here and they have never once been treated with understanding or care, they are forced to walk up several flights of stairs daily and get reprimanded and treated with condescending remarks whenever they're too slow to complete a task. They do nothing against transphobia, racism, bullying or other terms of harassment so If you truly care about your child, please figure out some place else to send them.
If I could give no stars I would. If your child is a bully or a racist they will fit in real well here, half the teachers are bully’s and throw there weight around. They victim blame all the time rather than deal with the issue, they almost never address the situation (if you get the police involved they put in a little effort) and then punish a child when they defend themselves from an assault when they don’t act to keep kids safe. If you care about your child do not send them here, they don’t like parents who are involved and care about their child wellbeing.
A great school for racist and bullies to thrive! 👍🏻
This school is one of the best schools my daughter has been to she joined sawtry in a very difficult time in year 11 and the school made her feel so welcome and made sure she got the grades she deserved. I honestly can’t thank that school enough for what they have done I would say one of the best schools around.
