As a parent who sent my daughter to this school, i must say this school has rules almost identical to the army and some prisons. Some staff are quite disrespectful and show no respect to the kids who go there.
For some parents who are thinking of sending there kids here and think i and other people may be exaggerating on the rules of the school here are some of the ones my daughter has told me about.
.All skirts and shorts must be to the knee
.every morning they must line up in there form line in alphabetical order, then the staff who are in charge will go along each line and check uniform, jewellery(peircings),they must also have there contents of bags in there hands to show the members of staff they have them or else face a detention.
.no piercings or jewellery
.They have a “fantastic 15” and if they are missing a part of it you will be given a detention
This school also pushes “individuality” but yet when my daughter dyed her hair a dark reddish purple she was told it was unacceptable and was told unless she dyed it back to a natural colour she would be kept in isolation, they also are fine with children being “furrys” i don’t thoroughly grasp the concept of furrys but i have been told that they identify as animals and are allowed to wear ears and masks and tails.
I hope the school sees this review and seriously considers this feedback and changes there ways as this is no ground for growing children and young kids with big ideas.
If you live in sandy and want to move your child to that school, i think it's the best to pay for their travel to a different upper/secondary school
this school doesn't care about people who would potentially need extra help and basically just burrow them into the ground to focus on their top tier students, would also mark GCSE students with study leave down giving them less marks for gcse, causing them to have a very bad future, The students in the school would be very discriminative against the LGBTQ+ , they would do nothing to stop racism or homophobia or transphobia as one time they outright banned LGBTQ stuff being displayed because it was "problematic" and "political", this happened when pride month was taken place and people rightfully so, displayed LGTBQ pride flags and had rocks thrown at them wrongfully by older "mature" students, (year 8's and year 10's) and those students yelled "It's football month not gay month", this school then banned pride flags instead of punishing homophobic behaviour, this homophobic behaviour was treated with just a slap on the wrist and call it a day, basically intriguing and supporting homophobia at this school.
However this doesn't apply to all members of staff, because a lot of the staff in that school are very positive and supportive, there are some in the mixed bag of goods and bad's which are quite questionable to be teaching, just like how political views should never be mentioned in class unless the subject is relevant to it.
This school also Out's (disclosing their gender/sexual orientation to their family members without their permission) trans and gay people, this morally and ethically is a very bad idea because the students might be quite anxious to come out to their parents yet and they would want to come out to them bby themselves instead of having a member of staff who is irrelevant to the situation tell the parents/carers of what their child identifies as with no regard of home safety.
This also is a problem because students can be diagnosed with Gender Dysphoria causing them to feel uncomfortable and deeply upset that they are still referred to their previous/dead-name and as their pronouns that they were assigned with at birth, modern day trans people having a high suicide rate after being disrespected and fearful of unfulfilling their goals of finally transitions after a long time of being stuck in a body they feel uncomfortable in. what i'm saying in this particular paragraph is that this school has no regard to respect, they show a lack of it, the only way to fix this is changing the way that this works, which is don't disclose private information on how the student is feeling about their gender/sexual orientation to their family members in case they haven't came out to them yet or it's just a safety measure.
This school has low help for students who suffer with poor mental health, this isn't the case with a small hand-full of staff but the majority of it does go through a lack of helping students with poor mental health, this isn't about the students "hiding it" and making it "under the radar" and also making it "hard to help" because they value the outside of the students e.g uniforms and they don't look deeply into what's going on when they ask for help.
My overall opinion on this school is that it's one of the worst school's in bedfordshire, in summary, homophobia isn't punished, Trans people and Gay People (Or anyone in the LGBTQ+) is respected and the mental health help in this school is poor and subjects which are irrelevant in the lesson or lesson topic are brought up in class
I left sandy secondary this year.
Over the years, I've endured more homophobia and transphobia than I have in any other place. The Academics are good but it all depends on the Teacher, The Attitude of a large portion of the teachers is not very positive and if you're falling behind, you're most likely going to stay that way. Personally I've experienced very little understanding towards my Mental Health, Special Educational Requirements, and Other Things. Dont get me wrong, some of the teachers I had were the best teachers i could've asked for, but the students of that school, are definitely out of control, very discriminative and violent.
I am a parent that sends my child to this school and I think that the school is appalling, the way they handle bullying, homophobia and transphobia is disgustingly bad. This school has ruined my child’s mental health and has offered very little support for them. I do not recommend sending your child to this school at all.
School is nice and all and try to help you but there not that great at helping you and there bullying management is awful I got bullied for 2 years, (year 7-8) and I kept telling school about it and they did absolutely nothing and that ruined my mental state cause my bully kept coming at me.
It’s a decent school and help you a bit but not to there best ability, also if you have any problems they don’t do much to help you for e.g. I got bullied and told school but they didn’t do anything to help so I didn’t have a very good school experience for 2 years.
