This school is very good and has multiple responsible teachers that help us students in anyway they can!! We also have a reliable student council team that you can talk to about any issues!
The teaching isn’t supportive enough for all students, special needs students will struggle. They care more about you attendance than mental health, don’t regularly check on you, favouritism is shown heavily, school dinners aren’t very good, not behaved students, awful behaviour on school buses, many students vape and overall not a good environment. Only certain teachers are kind but also supportive and are a great teacher. I can guarantee that the majority of the students don’t like it there.
the staff are extremely racist. they keep talking about mental health but do not help u at all. They don't care if you're getting bullied and if you try to fix it yourself, they exclude you.
Told them I was getting bullied and they did nothing
Absolutely awful they do nothing about bullying I TOLD THEM 3 TIME IN 3 DIFFERENT WAYS THAT I WAS GETTING BULLIED and they did absolutely nothing I highly dont recommend coming to this nightmare of a school
The Headmaster treats everyone, including fellow staff members and even parents, like dirt. His rules are unfair, and he has even dropped pencils down students' trousers to see if they are too tight. He uses exclusions to solve everything, and comes off as a cold bully. The students hate him, the parents dislike him and even some staff are displeased with the way he runs the school.
Whilst the SEN department is brilliant, the SEN kids are often ignored and get left behind by the rest of the school, meaning that those who cannot access the classroom and are learning from The Haven, which is a safespace for SEN kids, often miss out on vital information.
There is a massive problem with bullying at the school and the staff do nothing about it. They encourage you to report it, but when you do, they do nothing. My friend was even told by a teacher to stop telling tales. She has been bullied all through school and has refused to tell anyone but me about the other times she has been bullied due to this incident. I myself was bullied to the point where I felt suicidal, and the school did virtually nothing. One teacher I told said that it was out of character for these girls to be bullies, even though every other student and teacher knew that it was exactly the sort of thing that they would do. They promised that the police would be involved, as the bullying was racist and my bullies had threatened me with serious harm and death and hit me, and yet not even the in-school police officer knew about it. I was also promised that the bullies would be removed from all of my lessons, yet on my first day back the next year they walked straight in and nobody said anything to me or them. The bullies also received specialist help whereas I got nothing. Bullies are often protected in the school, whereas when their victims are pushed to the point where they retaliate, it is them and not the bullies who are punished.
I have told teachers of my suicidal thoughts before, but none of them referred me to any mental health services. They didn't even tell my mum, which you are meant to do if the child is underage.
Expectations for how fast students need to be in lesson are unreasonable, as the school is quite big and spread out. Students with breathing and/or mobility difficulties will struggle to get around school. There are allowances for arriving and leaving lessons early to try and give extra time to those who need it and those who can't cope with crowds, however these are tight and insufficient and make practically no difference. Some classrooms can get too hot or too cold depending on the weather.
The subjects are mostly okay, however the exam boards change constantly meaning that the way that questions need to be answered keeps changing, so most low grades were actually due to the format of people's answers and not that they had it incorrect.
The food is really nice, with a variety of vegetarian and vegan options available, and the kitchen staff are very friendly.
There are a variety of sports played at Royds, which students may enjoy.
Royds offers a lot of different afterschool clubs which may interest students, such as sports clubs, chess club, writing club, reading club, debate club, cooking club, arts and crafts club, textiles club, photography club, music club, drama club, language club and modern foreign film club.
Overall, my experience at Royds wasn't a good one, and whilst there are some good points, I can honest say that I wouldn't recommend sending your child here and that I am glad to have left.
The school claims to support mental awareness yet does not support there own pupils the teachers laugh and ridicule pupils who ask for help telling them to get to class what a disgraceful mind set
Recently became an academy and has completely removed the students right to self expression. Has been horrible at dealing with bullying in the past especially with discriminatory issues. Mental health support is virtually nonexistent. The only good thing in this school is the teachers in the English department.
Good school and care about students and learning, always willing to help people and help people excel through their work. However could do a lot more to help peoples mental wellbeing and notice the signs of people struggling better. The teachers and staff are great and very helpful. They should also do a lot more work to help show how peoples actions affect people and how to help someone with poor mental health etc. They also keep bad students/ bullys at the school and do not get rid of them which i am against
