PLEASE READ THIS FROM AN ACTUAL YR 11 STUDENT IN 2023
I was a new student last year and to be honest I WISH I didn’t choose ratton. From my experience there are so many teachers who are just not good at teaching but at least there was like a good 3 teachers who I actually enjoyed their lessons. Another thing is that they only allowed students to go to the bathroom during break and even then you probably wouldn’t get a chance to go because of the long queue, and if a teacher lets you out to go to the bathroom you last hope was the disabled toilets which ABSOLUTELY REEKS OF PISS EVERY TIME plus another long queue and your teacher might give you a detention because you didn’t come back to lesson in time, yay. One thing that I also want to talk about is how girls in ratton are always bombarded about their lashes, nails, piercings, colour of their hair and jewellery and every year before September they send all parents of the girls in ratton about how they shouldn’t wear lashes etc. Which I mean I get not wearing nails and having excessive piercings but lashes and hair just makes no sense. I would walk around seeing these girls and their lashes and hair looked AMAZING, like wouldn’t you want your students to look presentable and feel good wearing their uniform? It’s bad enough as it is that bullying and making fun of people at ratton is pretty bad and the fact that they banned skirts for girls because the boys were touching and looking under girls skirts and yet THEY got punished for it. They also have a problem with girls wearing leggings which I always did because, one they’re affordable and two, they’re more comfortable than those stiff trousers (and trust me it’s so uncomfortable in the summer wearing those) and I don’t really see the problem with leggings as long as they’re plain black with no logo on it but I always had a feeling that they had a problem with them because it “attracts attention” which is just silly. Another thing that I wanna talk about is how racism SPECIFICALLY is so normalised and being a poc at ratton meant that getting your braids pulled and touched in the corridor, people calling you Mickey Mouse or clown when I had my Afro out, getting called the n word because I stepped on someone’s shoe, and only having friends because they want the n word pass and the most of this comes from boys and not trying to make it sexist or whatever but it is true especially when they’re “roadman” copying black slang. BUT that is all from me I don’t want to bore you guys. IF YOUR PLANNING TO PUT YOUR KID IN RATTON JUST CHOOSE GILDRIDGE HOUSE <3
This school is a terrible place i would reccomend for you to put your child through this at all, Mental health is not cared for at all, Bullying is not taken to action, Teachers and Head of years mistreat the students and have no respect for them, Detentions are issued for an unreasonable reason, Kids at the school are absolutely vile, Kids smoke and vape in the toilets, There is atleast a few lovely teachers and a few nice pupils other than that this school is just about bearable
taster day and we had to play in a car park. 134 pieces of gum under the table and the toilets are like public toilets with poo on floor, wee on walls with some psycho moaning in the cubicle and the bells go at like 300 decibels and sound like fire alarms and give you heart attacks. just gonna tell you a teacher went to prison and will be released next year. (2016-2024)
Ratton school is awful at dealing with mental health and anything else to do with student wellbeing. Teachers immediately start yelling whenever anyone is misbehaving even on there first strike. This school gave me a horrible experience and I hated every second of it.
Awful school. Most teachers are on some sort of power trip, the big high and mighties who don't listen to parents or students, they don't accept or respect other people's opinions/beliefs, especially if it goes against 'the norm.' They talk to the students like dirt, they issue detentions for pathetic childish reasons, they tear down students rather than build them up, they knock the confidence and self esteem out of them. They automatically assume if they dont get along with a student, their siblings are punished for it.
When a detention is issued, they don't tell the parents the reasons why, they just expect the detention to go ahead regardless.
Most of the kitchen staff are rude, and they too talk down to others, they are crude and disrespectful as are the majority of the adults in that school.
This school is horrendous regarding support for mental health. Most teachers are shit, some are actually quite intimidating and scary. The other students here are absolutely feral. Kids literally smoke here and no form of consequence comes to them. To the teachers who actually do care, I can see the lessons are well thought out and sometimes actually learn stuff. Regarding mental health, I literally had more lessons based around nukes than mental issues. Quick point, you're not allowed to express yourself in any way. You're not allowed to have dyed hair, no nail polish, no extensive makeup, no fake eyelashes, you're only allowed to have one piercing in each ear and they have to be studs. The amount of unnecessary rules are insane.
Its alright the teachers are a bit over the top and the education is horrible- literally every teacher there is such a hypocrite and they don’t care for children’s mental health and if ur hurt they take hours to attend to you even if it’s urgent
Ratton is a brilliant school and has an amazing performing arts department. It is also a very accepting environment for young people from different backgrounds, genders, religions and sexualities. So far in my school experience, Ratton has really helped me develop as a person and i will be very sad when i have to move onto college at the end of year 11.
