It has taken me years to feel confidant and able enough to leave a review for PGHS.
My love for learning and overall confidence was broken during my five years here, with one member of staff stating I would never make it past collage. I have since graduated from a Russel group university ranked first in the country for my chosen subject and can now say that I understand what it is to be supported and reassured that I will succeed in life.
If you are not sporty, musical or an A* student you will be deemed as a nothing here and pushed to the side whilst the “gifted” students shine. It has taken me nearly 6 years to rebuild the confidence that was stolen at PGHS and when talking to peers who studied alongside me many feel the same way.
The constant assembly’s celebrating the high achievers and sessions stating only those with “true grit and determination will succeed good grades” was disheartening to say the least for the average student who still tried their best but was never gifted with the ability of achieving good grades.
The sense of importance that was put on grades and the impact that these will have on your life was pushed so much that many students felt extreme stress and anxiety. No information or resources where given regarding vocational courses, apprenticeship or BTECs as these where deemed not a traditional route of progressing in your education. When in reality a BTEC course helped me qualify for university and pursue a career I am extremely passionate and proud of.
Overall my experience at PGHS has left me with crippling self-confidence and a constant feeling of failure towards myself for not being academically good enough. To me the ability to care and show empathy towards others is much more valuable and will get you far further in life.
So to the teacher who told me I would never succeed you’re wrong, I have in many ways just without that precious A* you all crave.
AWFUL! This school discards the students with bad mental health. When a student is struggling, they brush them off like they are weird. Don’t send your daughters to this school unless you want them to wind up into a pit of depression.
I go to this school and there is a lot of support for students. The teachers do a lot at lunchtime and after school to help you and make you more confident in learning. I have made good friends here and know they also feel the same.
Not a great school, incompetent teachers who do not care enough about the students. Headteacher needs to leave as soon as possible as she frequently puts her students down and insults them. Hypocritical standards between teachers and students, often leading to detentions and several other punishments. However, they have great history and RE departments, who teach with enthusiasm but unfortunately these departments can't suffice for what the rest of the school is lacking.
This school was rated outstanding by ofsted however they are extremely strict and try hard to get rid of problems instead of working out why it is an issue. Isn’t as good as what people think it is.
this 'outstanding' school is shocking, the way they treat students is awful there is nothing outstanding about it at all they dont care about the health of students they care about the grades students are going to get to make there school get better, i highly do not recommend this school as it did nothing but destroy my daughters mental health
this school is terrible i am a student in year 7 2023 7GFO i hate this school with all my heart they are horrible you cant go to the toilet without a pass even if you are o your period they dont care not pass no toilet for you please for your daughters sake and her mental health please dont send her her x --m
i went to this school in 2014 and left in 2019 and i can comfirm that it is bad all they do is put grades over mental health and they always believe the other person ive been bullied for the most of the time when i was at PGHS and they used to punish me and they was unfair and one time i needed the toliet and the teacher didnt let me go highly dont reccomnd this school STAY AWAY and another thing they excpeted to do homework when they didnt even put it on show my homework.
My daughter attends this school she is in year 8. I cannot recommend it highly enough. She missed out because of Covid 19 attending the open days but the school more than made up for that by putting on a full weeks activities in August so the girls had a chance to meet each other before starting in the September. She absolutely loves it, she had a hard time in primary school with girls and I was apprehensive about sending her to PGHS but she has found her tribe who are just like her and has settled in well. The Teaching staff are exceptional they are interested in my daughter and are helping her meet her full potential. Whilst dealing with the administration staff again they have been respectful, polite and very helpful with any issues I’ve had. I would honestly not think twice about sending your daughter here it’s outstanding.
I am surprised by negative comments on here. I feel that the school has put a lot in place to support pupils in all years, especially following covid, and my daughter has benefitted from lots of support with her mental health as well as catching up on any missed work, although the remote provision was excellent.
This school also makes sure that all pupils, regardless of ability, achieve the best they can, not only in exams but also for their all round development.
I have a son too and only wish he could attend as my experience of other high schools does not compare! I would highly recommend this school to any parent.
I can't praise the school enough. I've had a tough time recently with issues at home. The school has organised a counsellor and my teachers have been really helpful. I'm not doing to badly in my studies either!
PGHS has been great for my daughter. The staff that have worked with her have bent over backwards to make sure that she has got the right support. She has benefitted from seeing a counsellor. The standard of teaching is high in my opinion and I can't fault the place.
Was alright when I started - went downhill after phone ban in second year
They didn't handle drama appropriately and would also be very intimidating towards people they believed did something wrong - I saw my best friend who never cried in her 5 years of being there bawling after a confrontation about something she didn't even do (I was in the classroom when the "incident" occurred)
Cameras were set up, areas are gradually being blocked off from students, has an award for being lgbt inclusive yet proceeded to say a slur and defended it
Grade wise it's a great school with teachers with great experience but even after leaving I'm hearing concerning things - apparently y11s were told that all they are are vampires and all they do is take take take and they are uniformed because they try to stick out for the wrong reasons (told by multiple students I keep in touch with)
I'm shocked to read these negative views about PGHS. Both my daughters have loved their time at PGHS (one is still there) and have always felt well supported. PGHS gets great results because it looks after the wellbeing of the students, not instead of it!
My daughters are both creative / arty types and have been able to study Art as well as Photography. They could have chosen from loads of other subjects too.
So impressed with this school. They're clearly working hard to make to give their girls a great experience. There arts provision is impression, I can't understand the comment below.
If you have a clever child you can't go wrong with this school but if you have one that needs a little more help the school are unwilling to help. Bullying is never treated seriously and they don't like you to report it and they never resolve it. The communication from the school is shocking and they never return your calls. In comparison to other local High schools this one needs to move into the 21st century. Badly let down in all aspects by the school and wouldn't recommend.
I have been disgusted how badly the young adults at this school behave. apparently it doesn’t tolerate bullying, however my daughter got bullied serval times, although she told her head of year many times. I am very disappointed in the teachers/headmistress, at this school as it is an outstanding school yet letting something as bad as bullying slip...
my daughter now suffers from many mental issues... after her finally telling me about it 6 months after she left. And I think this also affected her grade too!
Please do better!
