This school has damaged my mental health. As a transgender male, I have been forced to use female facilities and they did nothing about me being bullied or called slurs. The teachers are lovely, but the school overall is preposterously awful. We weren't always allowed to go to the bathroom, and autistic children get very little support. I regularly got physically harmed by other pupils in this space where I was supposed to be safe. All they care about is the Ofsted ratings, and the school is getting stricter and stricter. It wasn't like this in the 90s - early 2000s, yet they claim it was. Also, my key worker would berate me for my Russian accent and claimed it "intimidates" other students when it isn't my fault. The food in the canteen is rather unhealthy and expensive. Do not send your kids here unless you want them to be depressed and get bullied.
This school is absolutely awful. It's mentally and physically draining for everyone, but all they care about when you tell them that is just uniform, presentation and if you're doing all your work. You get points for stupid things like going to the toilet or asking for a calculator, bc everyone apparently has to pay £5-15 for a scientific calculator. Can't have significant items of jewelry on you because they confiscate it in minutes if they even notice it. Someone tries to jump you? They do absolutely nothing but protect their presentation as a school to Ofsted. Absolutely awful. Teachers are horrible and have no idea how to teach properly. If you ask they say you weren't listening so you'll just have to find out yourself. Ask someone else? Warning. Ask for help again? Warning for being offtask. The toilets are a state and the paths are so small that people have to actually squeeze onto them. Awful. Don't recommend. It'll ruin your child's mental health entirely.
Penrice isn’t anything like people said it would be. One of the worst things is the toilets. Apparently they spent a hundred grand on them but they’re absolutely disgusting and rubbish. Don’t get me started on the phone policy, even if you get a notification by accident, you loose your phone for TWENTY FOUR HOURS! is that even legal because my parents did not sign a consent form for this. You get detentions if you don’t have the correct equipment and if you have an “extreme haircut ” you have to be in internal isolation until it grows to an “acceptable length ”
Basically the school is terrible and only a few teachers are actually nice.
Authoritarian headmistress exercises power by control. True leadership involves manage trust. The relationship of trust between the school and its pupils has broken down and it needs new leadership.
I had a highly intelligent child that went to this school, who despite both of us trying very hard, never got help for their problems, and many very serious mistakes made, including safeguarding issues/ breach of trust.
Perhaps, unfortunately, you get bullying at every school, but it is the way it is dealt with that really matters and Penrice seem to care more about keeping the bully in, than protecting their victims- one of which was very badly attacked. I’m glad it wasn’t my child on that occasion, but the bully did enough to my child make sure enough psychological harm was done to probably last a lifetime. Services for children having problems, problems caused and exacerbated by the school, is appalling, despite fooling the awarding officials with paperwork and prepared answers. If you have a nice child who behaves and wants to achieve to the best of their ability, find another school or join a homeschooling group if possible. If I had my time around again, none of my children would have gone to Penrice. Their understanding of the need to nurture and care, is non-existent. They just want money for your children, hence obsession with high attendance (so quick to jump on the termtime holiday ban when the council were being more understanding) and its dictatorial rule over better behaved children - like lining children up just do to a uniform and sock check- yes, they check their socks even, very prison-like whilst not tackling the children with anger and power issues to any sort of best ability, in fact, they gave this particularly nasty bully power until she had to be excluded due to her extreme actions. It should never have gotten that far.
True results of a good school are happy children who are excited about the future, that’s what this school struggles to do with its focus on money.
I’m a year ten student in Penrice currently, I say this from experience; don’t send your kids here. They have no proper training in how to deal with children’s mental health’s. Their have been self harming in the yards at break and the child gets excluded because it’s too much for them to deal with. They prioritise intelligence and athletic children to make the school look better than it actually is. Attempts of suicide in the toilets really shows how brilliant this school is to the point it drives a young child to attempt to end their own life because of how poorly the school deals with mental health and bullying. Just recently a friend of mine has been physically abused by a boy in my year, he strangled her and punched her in the mouth while assaulting me and others around him, the school gave him a day in the link then let him out because they thought he was being bullied by the girl who got punched. When you hear your children complaining about going to this school everyday there’s a reason, sexual assault, knife and drug possession is highly common in this school and I’m telling parents reading this thinking of sending their kids into year 7 next year, don’t!
this school will work amazingly for you if you are completely mentally stable, amazing at everything and have a great worth ethic, otherwise you will struggle. the way they deal with bullying is the most pathetic attempt at it ive ever seen and don’t trust the award they received for helping students mental health, all they do is send out an email each week with some info on mental health. they’ve only just listened to our complaints about the tiny skorts we are forced to wear during PE and seem to care more about girls skin showing on their bloody ankles than anything. academically they’re amazing and i wouldn’t go to any other school in the area knowing what they’re like, just don’t expect to be treated equally to the boys. rewards for attendance and merits are really good, their attempt to be more environmentally friendly is pretty good too, but getting gaslighted over whether we were allowed to wear small hoops in our ears last year is not great. to be honest, every school has issues with sexism so if you want to do academically well, then come here.
Maybe instead of making the female students cover up and not show any skin because it “might distract the boys and the male teachers” they should teach the other students that we aren’t objects here for a males pleasure, and they shouldn’t look at us as such, I also wish the teachers would stay in contact with students that have left, especially those of us who missed out on our final year and prom and never got our end of secondary assembly’s or celebrations, simply checking in to see if we were doing okay in college would be enough.
This school is not safe there have been many incidents when other students have done something that effects the rest of the students like stabbing, drugs in lollipops and displays that have fallen on a kid and more but some teachers have just been dam right rude and all they care about is if the school has there uniform like a robot and that we can’t have any skin showing and that we can’t show who we are to the world and we just have to look the same the teachers think that students and teachers are gunna get distracted by some ankles, more then one piercing on each ear or our hair being to short. I don’t recommend it I only stayed there for my friends to support me through bad times and when I’m anxious about exams coz the school don’t care about that.
All they care about is how the uniform looks, no support whatsoever, teachers only focus on the students who do well and leave those who struggle to work it out for themselves. Only good thing I liked about that school was my friends and a few ( and I mean a few) teachers are really nice.
