Was only at this school for less than a year before I moved, during that time I saw teachers leave and get replaced very frequently. Loads of the staff were only there temporarily and a lot of them left halfway through teaching gcse year groups. Overall when I was there the quality of teaching was very poor - my physics teacher basically told us to write notes from the textbook every lesson, my chemistry teacher had an obsession with practicals and would never actually talk through topics relevant to the course. The maths teacher was god awful, we never wrote anything in our books and we were never given worksheets, rarely taught anything, he would also allow students to do basically nothing throughout the lesson and just chat. Another maths teacher is very similar and for the life of him cannot control the classroom. One thing I can say though is the biology teacher (Tom) is great at teaching and actually cares about his students. Aside from the staff, the school has literally no clubs or extracurriculars. The whole point of the school is that it feels more like a ‘work’ environment but since the school is so small it’s used as a dumping ground for kids who can’t cope in mainstream school, have behavioural or mental health issues. Not really a good option if your child requires pastoral support though as they are very short staffed. The school is full of kids who vape and smoke, loads of chavs. The dress code isn’t ‘business attire’ and loads of people wear the hoodies provided by the school. Pretty sure it got set on fire a week before the year 11 mocks. The ‘UTCness’ doesn’t make up for all the crap that happens in this school. You get like a week of work experience in year 11 and that’s about it, oh yeah, and that medical mavericks workshop which they show you about fifty times. The headteacher has good aims and wants the best for the school but it’s clear he has failed spectacularly, reflecting the recent ofsted report. It’s one of the schools which is extremely laid back and shitty, if your kid is lazy they will get away with doing fuck all and will probably fail their exams.
computer science is good here but maths is definitely lacking a bit. The school itself is nice and environment is friendly. school food is definitely overpriced as 2.10 for a common sandwich is definitely reaching and there are limited options.
Came to the school thinking that it would be better as it's a smaller school. I was soon proved wrong it's clear that this school is just for disturbed children, the police are regularly in the school from the 2 years that I was there it wasent out of the ordinary too see them regularly seen a good fhew fights in the school and the teachers are uselsss at splitting them up and dealing with them overall wouldn't reccomend yhis school to anyone
They don't care about the behaviour of the pupils and would let them get away with most things ,the most you would get is a 20 min detention at push.the maths teacher Richard he would let students get away with anything the most discipline he had was asking his pupils to calm down in the quietest voice .wouldn't reccomend going here if you want to get good grades
10/10 school even still looking back 2 years on from when I finished my time there. Focuses much more on personal progression with mentors and much more personal communication to students avoiding greatly the one size fits all approach from the average school. Felt like I mentally developed myself at this school compared to other schools where i came out the other end unchanged having barely learned any life lessons. In terms of teaching the curriculum they are perfectly good but the progression is far more important anyway.
Very good school for students that otherwise aren’t able to fit into the typical education system, the schools use of creating a more like workplace environment is a much better concept for most of the students at this school than others. This school has helped me with being able to be in a good quality education and had resolved many of the issues that I have faced with larger and more typical schools.
Being a former student, I can say that the UTC is a good concept, school hours and uniform is an imitation of the workplace, along with attitude towards the teachers, however, in practice, the school is very poor at discipline and you can virtually get away with anything, there is only one ‘scary’ teacher. To conclude, good concept just poorly executed
Really accepting and accommodating to all students main downside is that they have a slight higher focus on well being than eduction if that’s even considered a downside, this I luckily balanced out as it’s easier to learn once mental well-being has been taken care of.
