DON'T JOIN. CULT LIKE SCHOOL. STRIPS AWAY ALL HUMANITY FROM STUDENTS.
It's horrible. No free time no individuality. It strips all that makes you human to make us all the same. Also the forbidding of packed lunches is bizarre to me. All in all just a horrible school.
Mercia school is truly exceptional! It stands out as the best educational institution I have ever encountered. The level of discipline and academic focus is remarkable, providing students with an outstanding platform to thrive. The school's relentless efforts to propel students beyond their limits and help them realise their full potential are truly commendable. I am immensely grateful to the leadership team and all the dedicated teachers who have contributed significantly to this extraordinary learning environment.
This school is a cult. If you want your child to be an indoctrinated into this cult, where personality and individuality are crushed through rote learning from endless 'booklets', this is the place for you. This is education China-style, and completely abandons the well-established principles of (actual) successful schools in the UK, where the focus is on free thinking and developing the skills to innervate, argue, and think critically. Mercia's aim is for all pupils to churn out the same AI-esque exam answers, accompanied by power-hungry staff desperate to demonstrate their relentless focus on military-style discipline by doling out detentions for intolerable misdemeanours such as looking out the window. This may breed some exam and Ofsted success (yet to be proven) but doubtlessly does not stand pupils in good stead for an actual academic future, particularly at high-performing higher academic institutions. Don't be fooled by the misplaced arrogance of the staff. The polytechnic-educated headteacher, wearing his university robes for assembly, declares to the pupils that anything but a Russel group university place is 'failure' - ironic, out of touch, factually incorrect, and an inappropriate message to give to a state comprehensive comprising all abilities, backgrounds and ambitions.
This is a great school with a pupil focussed approach. I have two children at this school and they are both happy and enjoying their school life. Having looked around a number of Sheffield schools Mercia was the preferred option for us and I’m so pleased that the school has lived up to our expectations. Yes, it is strict and has well communicated rules and boundaries. Good! I like that and so do my children. It’s about bringing out the best in all pupils, allowing them to truly learn whilst they are at school, and instilling values and respect which are fundamental to their future life. These traits are sadly lacking in so many schools these days. If there were more schools with the same ethos as Mercia then the country would be in a much better place.
Best school I could have gone to, excellent staff who really care and are the best in their subject. Really academic, with strong sports teams and plenty of enrichment opportunities. Detentions are easily avoidable if you are prepared to learn. I feel extremely safe at the school, and know the teachers will support me in my ambitions for the future.
Please don't listen to the trolls who make personal comments about the staff- Marcia is an amazing School who are proud to instil great manners and give your child the best start in life. Many, many schools fall short in Sheffield. All staff are on hand at any time and don't hide in staff rooms - they are there to teach and are the best. It is a sad state of affairs to be apologetic to be the best, and for all the trolls who say they wouldn't work there - good ! you clearly don't have the pupils centric to your work ethic. My grammar is probably poor as I went to School in the 80's at the height of industrial action where staff were concerned about themselves. Mercia teach your children you to dress smartly, be respectful, be your best - doesn't matter the size of your house or car - look at the oversubscription figures - says it all -
What a horrific school! The authorities should put this place into special measures. The "Head teacher" is clearly troubled mentally, and is using the children as a way to garner attention. Preferring to spend time buying Peaky blinders style suits than dishing out compassion or understanding. Punitive punishments for such heinous crimes as: Looking out of a window, not joining in the group talk about a subject set by the school during your lunch, picking up a pen you dropped without permission. They even have the audacity to think that they can give Saturday detention.
The biggest joke of all is that a recent job vacancy post was full of poor grammar and spelling mistakes.
That brings me to the staff. 9/10 hour days are expected, plus you will be expected to go in on Saturdays. The militarism in the advert is incredible. I say this as someone that was actually in the military, and not just a Walter Mitty type, like this "Headteacher". Holding the line?! Give me a break
If you think this is exaggeration give it a Google yourself.
I would never, ever send my child to such an awful place. I'd home school before I submitted my child to that kind of psychological abuse.
This school CARES. They are with you and your child every step on the way. Very supportive, but also they try to challenge pupils, which is good. It is not only about rules, but also about lots of praise and positiveness. My daughter is very excited about school, so this is important to me.
Great school, with rules, and I like that. Finally a place where actually there are some requirements. Reception staff absolutely amazing, very helpful, teachers very supportive. I cannot imagine my child being at another school
Awful school. Students are very mentally drained, the school give detentions for even dropping a pen and nine hour long days are obscene. The school completely disregard students mental health and only care about grades. Highly unimpressed.
