I was there when the school opened and I have to admit I got a good education despite my best efforts at preventing this. Another problem was the group of kids with a bad sense of entitlement who would arrive each year. These were the kids who had been at private schools and their parents could no longer afford it so they came to Mearns Castle. These kids had a dreadful attitude. Looking back they behaved as if they were in a bad Hollywood film! I left in the early 80's so no doubt these problems are no longer an issue. If I'd lived in the catchment area when my kids were of secondary age I'd have sent them there without hesitation
