Since being at Mayfield, my daughter has been thoroughly miserable.
There are continual accusations of racism being thrown around and people are afraid to even breathe! It is doing no one, white or black any good to continually fuel this issue with discussions about race and references to historical events of which no one can change. Get back to teaching and stop with this brainwashing wokery for the sake of these poor kids.
I’m a current student at mayfield. And this is an HONEST review of the school in case any parents are considering sending their kids.
I will start with the positives as there are fewer of those. There are a large amount of clubs to choose from, which is very good if you are starting the school. This can help you make new friends and begin your path here. As well as this, the school does offer cheap (ish) breakfasts for students. £1.70 for a breakfast meal is a fairly good deal.
Moving onto the negatives, and why I give my school just two stars. I will not go on about the lack of attention they give to bullying. That has been mentioned in almost every review written. MGSG is far more focused on punctuality and uniform. I’m not talking about simple things, such as being skipping lessons or wearing your skirt too high. No. Mayfield is so strict with punctuality that you can receive a DETENTION for being a single minute late. However, I can only think of around 2 teachers that show up within the first 5 minutes of the lesson. Uniform is also very irritating. Our school is currently locked in a debate on whether girls of colour can use coloured beads in there hair to express their identities! You can get uniform infringements for very small things. Especially coats. Rather than walking through a corridor as normal, you are instructed to take your coat off and BLOCK others from coming in and out as soon as you step inside. Otherwise? Detention.
I also won’t spend ages talking about the lack of support for people with special needs. My friends who is autistic comes here and I recently found her having a panic attack in the corridor because the teacher that was supposed to be looking after her abandoned her.
I will speak about homework. You are given a homework timetable at the start of every year which explains when you should get homework. Teachers do not stick to this. Your daughter/son/child needs to be prepared to receive 3-5 pieces of homework a day. ALL due the next lesson. It only gets worse as you go from year 7 onwards. And guess the punishment if you miss one? Detention.
Listen. I’m not putting my name, year group or age on here because the school will probably hunt me down for this. (Hi Mrs Wilson.) But this is my advice to parents looking to sign their kids up for MGSG.
Only consider this school if:
- Your child is good under pressure
- You have ridiculous amounts of free time
- You are willing to spend thousands on uniform
- Your child doesn’t care about getting bullied
- Your child has no special needs
- You can afford canteen prices
- Your child is able to cope with screaming teachers
Basically don’t come here unless your child is a prodigy.
Bullying is rife in the school.. several pupils have had to leave due to bullies nit being expelled or dealt with properly.
Basic procedures on pupil welfare are ignore. Unless these issues dealt with then stay away at all costs
going into yr8 and this school sucks , doesnt care about bullying , racism , homophobia , transphobia . i dont see the point in being a teacher if you dont care for the students , at this point just find a new job because reading all these reviews makes me so angry that not even 18 yr olds are struggling with mental health issues and at home issues and not even one single teacher could help them
Hi. I go to this school right now. And believe me its not excellent. Me and my friends suffer racial abuse from the teachers everyday, regardless if we did something right or not. They dont fix problems they create more. They give you detentions, and Memo's (bad behavior points) out like its free. If you get 9 detentions you get expelled. But the teachers give them out knowingly. The school is cramped and walking around; you cant breathe. But they still expect you to walk on one side. Bullying, bullying is very bad here it is everywhere, but its so bad especially as a black student, the teachers look out for you because your black. One time me and my friends were in the canteen buying food, when one on the food ladies said we stole something. We didnt. we didnt bother to argue and just accepted it the way it was. The teachers consficate emotional and spiritual jewelry and Diaries! Worse thing is they keep them, or read them, then tell you off if you wrote something bad. The teachers are nosey, and dont leave students alone. As a girl in the school the male teachers make you very uncomfortable. There's also other female teachers who dont understand, when girl are on their periods. They still make you sit there, using the excuse "you should have went at lunch". Also the sixth formers are disrespectful. They walk past us calling us monkeys. When we do nothing to them. You get out on report for being late, and if you arrive 1 minute late, you get a detention after school. All my friends say it too, if it wasn't for us being friends, they would leave. My friend, she said she wanted to commit suicide because of the teachers continues discrimination against us. When talking about black history you can feel everyone's eyes locked unto the black students its disgusting. When i went to a club it was painful everyone was heterophobic (Against straight people) which was so BAD for a school that are "diverse". The food is overpriced, they have fake charities. This school is bad. Please dont go through what we have to. YOU deserve better.
Teachers don’t consider the wellbeing of students, they only care about the school’s reputation in Oxford’s views. They have no development for hygiene or how to treat students. You spend most of your day just doing schoolwork/homework. The teachers insult you and accept bullying because they don’t want to put in any effort to stop it. They scam us of our money with non-existent charities and overpriced food. Then they spend it on unnecessary things rather than what we desperately need. You never leave school on time and have your property taken from teachers when they shouldn’t be. Terrible community that’s stuck in their own delusion that everybody loves them and wants to be a member of the school. They provide no mental support for students either. Much bullying and racial issues to be resolved.
Never come to this school because the experience is horrible.
I suffered with mental and physical health issues. Both chronic, has a awful home life so school was meant to be a sanctuary.
I had an amazing head of year for 9&10 but when she left it was awful.
I was assaulted outside of school and physically defended myself. The deputy head called me a disgrace to the school and sent me into class balling my eyes out.
They also called my family and said I was suicidal and said I was going to harm myself if I went home, I wasn’t they made it up and made my guardians scared for me and cry. They then kept me in school until 8pm when my social worker had to come and get me. She was disgusted.
I had no support at this school and all they did was ridicule me when I was in because I didn’t have the best attendance.
I got very good gcse grades considering the situation I was in but was called a failure. I went on to a mainstream school for my alevels and got 3A*s and a B. They treated me with respect. So this school is shocking
The school has a major issue with bullying across all years and will try to ignore it or sweep concerns under the carpet rather that tackling the issue head on first time.
I went to Mayfield a few years ago. I suffer from autism and the school were unable to accommodate to my needs. I was seriously made fun of and everyday was a struggle. I wasn't the only student - there were/are many others with a similar problem. There were days when I felt unable to get up in the morning and the staff would constantly shame me for not getting 100% attendance. They would say comments such as "This is a first" and "Decided to finally turn up?" when I did feel able to go to school, making me feel overwhelmed. The work they give you is tedious and almost everyone struggled to do it. The staff at this school do not care about you and only care about grades/attendance/money. The school is literally falling apart at this stage. I have no idea if it's had a remodel or not since 2019 but from when I was there, it was hell. If your child has a mental health issue, please don't take them to this school.
the school does not care about the students mental health, in my opinion. if a student is struggling to get good grades they will get labelled as lazy when they may just be struggling with their mental health.
