Teachers
Teachers are helpful and do listen to you, I’m dyslexic and have gotten great help from the English teachers which has allowed me to do my exams and English lessons in a way which I can understand and enjoy without struggling as much with my dyslexia. The Teachers are always helpful when reporting something or needing help with something my head of year and English teacher have greatly helped me in issues I have had with other students, and my maths, history and drama teachers are very friendly and trustworthy (along with most of the teachers I haven’t had)
Students
The students are generally okay, sometimes annoying or rude but generally are okay and friendly
Quality of education
The quality of education I have and still are receiving at this school is quite good and most teachers will even split off from the main curriculum if you have a question about a detail which doesn’t really matter in the learning, lessons are planned effectively and are quite enjoyable in most areas.
Incidents
The school deals with incidents effectively, I have been bullied in the past for my sexuality (gay) and they have dealt with the people who did it extremely effectively, and are not afraid to kick people out of the school if they do something which is quite extreme, they take homophobia and anti LGBTQ speech very seriously along with vandalism, and in my experience have been very helpful even contacting the police for me when the hate crime in school moved to when I was walking home from school
Other
The school does have an IPad program which allows all students to get iPads and teaches them how to use it for education (very helpful) the school also has numerous spaces to wait inbetween lessons and to sit and have lunch in. They do have a SENCO program which works with students who do need help (such as me) and are effective and helping students. The school has alot of space including 2 DT rooms with alot of equipment, 2 FT rooms with alot of equipment, a massive drama area with a stage and seating and back area along with props (they hold plays every year) the school also has a library with many books.
They do have none gendered bathrooms as well. The school has a massive PE space as they work with the Malton Community Sports Centre. And on Thursday they do an hour of activities such as gardening, games, football and several others to help develop other skills which normal lessons don’t teach
Issues
The 2 main school buildings are a bit outdated and in some cases do need to be touched up, the bathrooms in the 2 main buildings are a bit old
While I’m not disabled the main buildings don’t have lifts to second floors (the only lift is the science block) and also there is quite a lot of walking
Ok so I’m in my third year at malton and I wanna start off with the positives because I think there’s a lot that goes unseen by the students. So first things first, they have a really good mental health team thing idk what you call it like a pastoral team and I went to see them regularly in year 7/8 but I can’t really see them at all much now because of covid and social distancing and stuff but they’re literally so cool and I loved getting all those activities to do it was so fun and distracted me from my worrying. They also give you a ton of information about the school which is really good for me so I know exactly what I’m doing and what time and it’s great for planning ahead which is my specialty.
But there are also quite a few negatives and some get pretty serious. A lot of students, including my self and friends, often use self destructive behaviours for whatever reason and this goes unseen by teachers. Also please please stop giving us so many assessments right before Christmas as well. I’m trying my best and I’ve been getting LOADS of homework this week. Like I have two tests tomorrow (Friday) and another two tests for the next upcoming week and 3 pieces of homework I need to finish and it’s really stressful so please allow us to actually have a life outside of school because I’m not sure how much longer I can cope with all of this. As well as this, I’ve had multiple panic attacks whilst doing my homework and it really is awful.
Furthermore, you need to take bullying way more seriously. I know so many people (mainly in my year) who are bullying others for their sexuality, the way they dress, their interests, their gender, their race etc and I’m so fed up of it. In computing one day, I sit in front of a bunch of homophobic misogynists and me and my friend tried to educate them that making fun of black/lgbtq people isn’t funny because I know people who have attempted to k*ll themselves or s*lf h*rm because of that kind of discrimination like ugh make it stop it’s not funny. I hope all of you who support that kind of stuff get properly educated one day. Also, can you please start to teach the staff how to respect their own students. Today a teacher hinted I was fat when I literally feel guilty eating and that was a major trigger for me and I didn’t feel like eating for the rest of the day.
The punishments are way too harsh as well. I was having such a bad day and my top button was undone and I got yelled at to do it then I just ran to the toilets and started crying (I do that often). Also, stop telling girls/non-binary peeps/boys/gender fluid kids or whatever gender you are to pull their skirts down. The boys don’t get distracted and if they do, don’t tell us off, give them a lesson on how to respect other people.
But besides body shaming, racism, sexism, homophobia and unfair punishments, it’s a pretty decent school :)
Also I’ve missed a ton of stuff out but idc I need to go do another hour of revision because I get stressed if I don’t do enough.
And thank you to anyone who read all of that ily and remember you’re loved by so many people and your problems are 100% valid ❤️
