I was in the school from 2019-present and i am constantly shouted at by most teachers, and students are ridiculously misbehaved, i wish to leave the school
In Short:
- Budget is all over the place (as highlighted in other review) with a 3G football pitch but disgusting conditions in the loos
- Work isn’t too overwhelming but you need to be prepared to do the revision in your own time to get good grades
- Claims to be doing stuff against bullying, racism, and homophobia, but the effects aren’t felt
- Still think (academic wise) it’s better than other schools in Maidstone
Oh well where do I begin. Why don’t we start back in 2017 when i first joined. Behaviour was not taken seriously. Conduct cards were a thing and they were a joke. You would fill them up to 4 marks, “lose” it, and ask big C man in student services for a new one. Lunchtime detentions were dished out like jägerbombs at a nightclub but no gave one, they were just for the laugh.
Bullying, homophobia, racism, and any other hate crime you could possibly think of is a thing at this school. Big Miss J says “MGS take bullying very seriously” and i haven’t heard more bs in my life. One person would get an after school for calling someone gay and another person would get a conduct mark for calling someone a racial slur, just as an example.
dont forget the awful spending schemes this school follows: useless metal signs, rowing machines, astroturf in the most ridiculous places, repainting walls unnecessary colours for absolutely no reason, fancy smart boards that barely work, and even teachers who have no idea what theyre doing.
some of these teachers are make or break for your experience at this school. a lot of them do not care in the slightest about your education, its just a job to them and they have no sympathy at all. the way some teachers treat their students is unbelievable, like it is not how you want your child treated in what is supposed to be a learning environment.
this school is just ridiculous in general. from one thing to another this school is getting progressively worse and worse every year and i for one CANNOT wait to leave it for good.
I went there from 2019-2021. I'm at a different school now however the overall experience was decent. They served good food in the cafeteria (which is also commonly known as the refectory). Most of the staff were either alright or really good. Teachers are there for you if you have mental health problems a good majority of the time. If you concentrated in lesson and didn't mess around, school is extremely easy. Big up Mr Muscendo.
For how well-respected the school is, it really isn’t that great. My father went there from 1995 to 2000 whereas I started going in 2016. He agrees that the school is undoubtedly not as good as when he went there and a lot of the good reputation the school has is nowadays misplaced from years ago when the school was a lot better. Don't get me wrong, its a decent school, especially compared to the others in the area but for what its hyped up to be its not that amazing.
The school are doing well at handling our learning and preparation for our upcoming GCSEs after the lockdowns due to COVID and a lot of the teachers have been very helpful and just overall good teachers. However, like in most schools, there are some teachers aren’t that great be it their subpar teaching or how they treat the students. Basically the teachers you have can make or break the experience you have there.
Bullying often isn’t taken as seriously as they claim that they do. I had reported experiences with bullying many times and they did very little and it would often start again within a week or two. Casual racism and homophobia aren’t that uncommon there unfortunately, just like with a lot of schools. Student Services are usually quite unhelpful.
Also the schools priority with budget makes no sense at all. For example, a year ago they bought a bunch of metal signs everywhere, which in theory is actually quite useful until you remember that most people learn their way round in a matter of a couple weeks and even if they still don’t know, everyone has a map of the school in their planner making them entirely futile. Especially since even if you lose your planner, theres maps framed in some of the hallways RIGHT WHERE A LOT OF THE SIGNS ARE making them even more useless and therefore a waste of money. However a lot of the school toilets aren’t in the best condition, a lot of them not having working soap dispensers, some stalls having no toilet paper and doors that dont lock properly, for example.
As for extracurricular activities and sports, there really isn't much range in what you can really do. Its better to explore activities outside of school unless you like rugby, football, cricket or a couple other things, I forget what.
This review is based almost purely on my own experience with the school and I entirely understand that this could very likely biased as I haven’t had a great experience at this school and it was underwhelming especially after how good it used to be according to my father and how much it was hyped up to be. I am not saying the school is a BAD one. I wanted to bring to light some things that aren’t often mentioned.
TLDR: MGS is a quite decent school but not that great for how good its reputation is. Bullying isn’t taken seriously and the budget is often used for things that really aren’t that important compared to some things that actually need more priority. Some of the teachers are wonderful and have really helped me so much on those subjects however some are subpar: teachers make or break your experience. Not a lot of range in extracurricular activities.
