I have one child who has been through KHVIII school and left and one who is a current pupil (both attended the prep school too). We are parents who have chosen to pay for our children’s education even though we have struggled to do so (our right to choose to do so). Our children have both thrived at the school for many reasons. It’s been a safe environment, promoting and instilling all the values we ourselves value such as kindness to others, awareness of global issues, appreciating what we have in common yet also respecting differences and so much more. The school has provided a well rounded education complemented by excellent sports, music and other extracurricular opportunities. Teachers (including VMT) and support staff have been wonderful throughout our experience with the school and we were especially grateful for the high quality of continued remote lessons throughout Covid lockdown periods.
Our children have had very positive relationships with their teachers, particularly form tutors from Year 7 right through to sixth form. Subject teachers have always been knowledgeable and passionate in their teaching and support (clearly evident at all parents evenings we have attended). We have also many friends and family who have also chosen KHVIII for their children for the same reasons as us and some who chose the school based upon our experiences. Those children who have left (including our son) hold dear memories of school life and periodically attend alumni events, concerts etc. When our youngest leaves we hope she will cherish her time at Henrys and maintain her links with the wonderful school community. Henrys has not only provided a solid education but a wealth of experiences we are hugely grateful for.
We have been really happy with the school and our two children have thrived there. The teaching is super and the pastoral care from the teachers goes above and beyond, as you’d expect. Over lockdown they were great, and whilst the last two years of merger have created anxiety, the actual schools have just continued to be first rate. Couldn’t be happier. Long live King Henry’s! (And Bablake!!)
This school is very expensive for what you get. The quality of teaching had gone downhill since the new head becane in charge. There is much racism towards white peoples from certain teachers. Many teachers however are very kind and helpful and go above and beyond. However these good teachers have now left due to the poor leadership.
Great school for grades, staff care about students grades and are happy to support them and put in extra effort to help them succeed. Decent teaching with a few exeptions, teachers care about what they are teaching.
However, the school can be too pushy and stressful when it comes to grades and can cause a lot of undue stress through mark down policies or unrealistic revision and extra curricular expectations and then guilt trip students for not meeting these ridicolous standards.
Extremely poor PSHE programme that will do little to prepare students for the working and 'real' world. Almost non existent and all too ready to scrap what they have in favour of revision related things, you may be able to get the grades you need for university but students would struggle to survive on their own.
Very little support for students who struggle for reasons outside their control, will shrug off and ignore students expressing fear in home life situations as well as mental health problems and even assult or stalking problems.
This all leads to a really pressurised environment with high stress and severe untreated and ignored problems amongst the student body.
I have experienced mental health problems as well as homelife problems the school has ignored. I have talked friends down from suicide and our year group is so firmly divided we joke about a berlin wall. I have helped friends who also have poor homelife and listened as people told me about the ways the school has ignored their problems.
The school also has suffered from institutionalised racism which was demonstrated in an ignorant response to a severe racism incident that seemed to communicate more concern for their reputation than the serioud matter at hand. Movements are being made towards greater lgbt+ equality but the current environment is stifling and very much an ignore it policy.
School that ensures you get the grades you want to get-bit pushy but that comes with the atmosphere, honestly good school made some great friends and teachers are very supportive-the pastoral care system is understaffed poorly managed and a whole mess. I myself have been victim of it 1st hand,so if you have mental health issues-happen to get bullied-heck even stalked harassed-a dysfunctional home life they won’t do anything about it. Good school-it’s not that bad it’s really good Academically and will set you up for uni,in my humble opinion though it’s not worth the money (12k annually)
