Serious Concerns About SEN Support and Safeguarding

I am very disappointed with the lack of support and care provided at King Alfred’s School, particularly for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). There are serious concerns about how students with additional needs are treated, with punitive measures often prioritised over understanding and appropriate interventions.

The school also appears to have safeguarding issues, with incidents where students’ safety and wellbeing were not adequately ensured. Communication with parents is inconsistent and reactive, making it difficult to trust that concerns are being properly addressed.

As someone familiar with safeguarding and SEN frameworks, I find the school’s approach to be far below the standard expected of an educational institution. More focus is needed on creating an inclusive, safe, and supportive environment for all students.

Impressive School

We couldn’t be happier with the school. The pastoral care has been amazing and obviously very well thought out. There has been support every step of the way. Our child is excelling in all subjects and has some lovely friends. Very impressed by senior management and the headteacher.

Absolute SHIT school. All they care about is how the school looks to parents/carers or ofsted. Every day I have gone here has been hell. I’ve been bullied by numerous different people, and every time my parents have gone in to have a meeting. They promise multiple things to be changed for me, and then when it comes to actually keeping these promises, they act like it never happened. PLEASE do not send your kid here, only send them if you hate them. Oh also, the education isn’t as good as they make it out to be. In one year I’ve learned barely anything. The teachers spend the whole lesson making us “sit up nice and straight, cross our arms, and be silent.” Instead of teaching us anything. And the food is overpriced. Like £1.20 for this tiny bottle of water? No thanks. It seems they also deliberately make the water fountain water taste horrible so that you’ll buy a drink. They are also extremely annoying about uniform. Leave a part of your shirt accidentally untucked? DETENTION. Take off your blazer for one second because it’s 30 degrees? DETENTION. Where non-grey socks? DETENTION. It seems they care more about how we wear our clothes than how much we learn. The toilets are always dirty as f*ck as well, with piss all on the floor and shit on the walls. Last thing, they SUCK at answering calls. You’d have to send 20 voicemails to even get a response, and got knows how long for them to actually have a conversation with you.

Happy experience so far

So happy with KA’s. I came from The Downs and feel much happier here. The academic side is great but I have many more opportunities and have a lot of support at school. Nowhere is perfect but I like the school

Shit don’t send ur kids there x

this school has ruined my life, none of the staff actually care about their students and only care about how the school and students are presented as. They only care about uniform. If a student is skipping their lesson because they are having a panic attack and crying they will simply refuse to do anything helpful and send you to isolation. If you have bad mental health the school sees you as a problem to their school image and sees your mental health as bad behaviour. If you want to go to the toilet in class they will take away ur human rights and not let you go and if you walk out of your class to go to the toilet they’ll give you a detention. The school gives detentions for the dumbest shit like wearing white socks, having more than one ring, wearing a necklace, having your blazer off in 20 degree weather, pulling your blazer sleeves up. Also the school picks on certain students especially those with bad mental health. The school doesn’t acknowledge how the students are suffering and just makes everything worse for them. I wouldnt wish my school experience here at kas to anyone. This school actually makes me want to off myself fr
I forgot to mention their ways of educating is crap. Also a old pedo staff took a picture of me and my friend once which u aren’t alowed to do and said “ha i got you “(we weren’t in class when we were supposed to be btw) and refused to delete it ? Like sir tf you doing🤣🤣 he’s lucky we didn’t know his name

Gcses

Welp, made it through ig

I'm glad to no longer be at kas. I will openly admit I didn't enjoy my time there.

The buildings are new, and obviously have good facilities and the site itself is really good. But that's mainly irrelevant because I only cared about the qualifications I'd get from there.

The teachers were lovely people but always believed they knew my abilities better than I did. They thought I'd get a 7 in GCSE maths, I got a 9 and am now in university for maths. They weren't encouraging me to get a high grade which I knew I was capable of, they settled with me being a 7 student. Not that I'm saying a 7 is bad, but it isn't what I needed. Additionally with English I was predicted 56, I got 89 with the 9 in language, I had minimal support with aiming for higher grades as I was considered a mid student.

I was obese in my teens, and it took a long time to get myself on better track, and the pe department made my life worse. In year 7 my teacher made us write down what we didn't like about ourselves and to design a fitness plan to improve on it, this isn't healthy for literal 11 year olds. I was constantly looked down upon by the staff because of my weight, which was caused by factors I couldn't control at the time.

I'm glad I never have to go back.

Presentation over care

When I attended this school I experienced bullying that went reported (by me) and then ignored (by everyone else). I found I lost passion for every subject I was interested in to the point of having to drop a GCSE due to stress. They (the school) repeatedly harassed me over my attendance despite me always having a valid reason when I wasn't in class, my grades being above average, and my attendance not actually being bad. The teachers would continuously pick on the wrong students; telling off the good students and ignoring the bad behaviour of the others.

For the first 2 years of my attendance at this school, despite all the negatives, it was okay because there were a few teachers that clearly cared about their students and their subject. Then, one by one, almost every good teacher left.

It is clear to me, and other students that i have spoken to about this school, that they care more about appearance than the actual people attending their school. This was shown clearly when they ignored not only bullying towards me, but a majority of my friends. It was shown when they ignored a blatant homophobic hate crime aimed towards my friend. It was shown when they chose to ignore all the students wishes and change the uniform. It's shown when students get detention for not wearing blazers in 20+ temperatures. It's shown in the headmaster who continues to give assemblies that are belittling and demeaning towards many students. It is shown in the constant disrespect the teachers will happily show students just because they can. It was shown when they caused me and many people I know more stress when we were already struggling with our mental health.

In the course of my time there I was given only one detention, what was it for? Asking a teacher to not interrupt me mid sentence after nearly a year of this teacher being rude to me. However, getting a detention for menial things is common at this school. Getting a detetion for genuine issues is rare. Teachers don't care, the school councilors don't care. No one here actually cares about their job.

If you want your kid to have a good school experience, never send them here. This is the school you go to if you want to ruin your passion for life. I wish i was being dramatic.

They may be able to churn out decent grades, but is it worth it?

what king alfred’s did to me

this school is the reason for a suicide attempt and psychiatric treatment. it’s students are predominantly disgusting and not dealt with, while teachers aren’t properly trained to deal with something as simple as a student having an anxiety attack. i find myself CONSTANTLY having to argue for literal human rights and equality, while defending myself against scum. it’s an unfair place that’s grade-driven. it’s unorganised, and did absolutely atrociously at keeping students distanced and safe during the time we were in school during the pandemic.
it’s ruined my life, and i will never get those five years back.

Teachers are unempathetic, coffee-driven, sociopaths. Students have a huge divide between eachother with the loud majority being discriminatory bullies that the teachers turn a blind eye to. If your child has any sort of mental heath issue DO NOT send them here. Absolutely appalling treatment towards those who suffer with any sort of anxiety, depression, adhd or anything else that might be seen as "attention seeking" or seen as "causing problems".
