This school is not good at all. Yes there are some helpful teachers there but not many. Most of the teachers prejudge you on what you are wearing and what you look like. They are not very helpful and care more about giving out negatives then helping students.
The teachers at this school seem to enjoy bullying some of the students more than the vaping kids, speaking of, the busses are like a constant gas chamber with all the stuff that happens on them, it feels like no man's land. You have to be a veteran at dodging just so a £1.88 baguette doesn't hit you as it flys through the air at terminal velocity. The teachers have this stupid rule where you can't go for a piss for the first or last 15 minutes of the lesson. During in between lesson 1-2 and 3-4, if you need a pass, odds are the you'll get stopped or just not want to go because of the strawberry watermelon scented bathroom, even if you could call it that, they're missing half the funking locks. I hope the abandoned mine under the school eats it up and engulfs some of the twatty teachers who think they're the next coming of christ because the like to feel power over children. Although I hope some of the good teachers find a way out of that place, even Blackwood comp is better and that's saying something.
personally, in general i don’t think islwyn is that bad. Although i do have some issues like; most of the toilets locks are broke so you cannot lock the toilet and sometimes the teachers walk into the main part of the toilet because there is no actual door to get into the toilet , only doors on the cubicles so everyone can see you washing your hands etc ,, You can’t go to the toilet between lessons bevsuse there are teachers standing in front of the toilets telling you to go to lesson ; your not allowed to go to the toilet 15 minutes once the lesson starts , or 15 minutes before the lesson ended , giving you only (30 ) minutes every hour lesson. You’re only given (20 ) minutes to eat break and (35) minutes to eat lunch . The cafeteria is too small to hold all the pupils therefore the pupils need to all line up , and by the time the last people get in there’s barley anything left . Some staff are quite rude or not helpful . Some staff don’t know how to teach properley but most are fine . You need to wear uncomfortable blazers otherwise you get sanctioned , even though. nobody in school likes them and they are quite frankly a waste of money , in the middle of a national crisis . Some pupils go unfed throughout the day because they cannot afford school meals . and the school meals don’t cover the costs to eat at all the provided times (breakfast club, break , lunch ) The school does not allow pupils to express them selfs. There is a problem with bullying and it’s not taken very seriously . It’s not a very nice school environment and there should be more places to go when your angry, sad, etc . There’s not enough space in the school in general and there’s sometimes not enogh classroom space for other needs . The library is split in to half or 3 sections only 1 to actually use the library and resd , there was computers in the library but now there’s not. (although the pupils have been given chromebooks) they are expected to charge every night and if you don’t you get sanctioned, pupils are supposed to bring full equipment to school every day and if you don’t you get sanctioned , the teachers have to note on an online system (classcharts that you go to the toilet , wtf , why?? i think there is definitely some invasion of privacy sometimes , and sometimes the teachers tell you that your not allowed to go to the toilet at the moment , despite only being allowed (30 ) minutes to use the toilet , Theres a couple more issues but in general the school is just average and over -rated it needs a lot of improvement and pupil suggestions should be taken more seriously
islwyn high school is a good school with a lot of supportive teachers. there are a few flaws like not having enough seating in the canteen and not enough shelter outside for when the teachers don’t believe its raining. When we do get sent in it is absolute madness. Most pupils get sent to second or third floor where they basically have free range of the classrooms and rubbish gets left everywhere. Another flaw is the rewards system is rubbish. Pupils who are known to misbehave get reward points /positive notes home for having one good thing like not disrupting the class for 10 minutes or something stupid whereas well behaved kids rarely ever get reward points as they are just “expected” to behave. the rewards system should be encouraged and better behaved students should get recognised more often. The canteen should go back to how it used to be where there are more options and not one massive queue. The PE department may as well have just given up on pupils other than the select few we like to call “their netball girls”. Pe teachers tend to favour the kids that take part in after school sports activities and take gcse PE and will make sure they always get there way. If you aren’t a part of the netball girls but still partake in after school clubs i can guarantee you, you will never get picked to go and play against other schools as the teachers will always pick the same team and just swap out a few girls here and there. the whole time i was on the netball team (which was a good 1-2 years) i only ever played one tournament and one single match from what i can recall. PE needs to be more inclusive and less sexist. The boys get to go out and play football or rugby or tennis whereas the girls are stuck with netball or dance most of the time. girls should have to opportunity to play football and rugby if they want to. On the other hand, the boys are forced to go outside whether it’s boiling hot or tipping down with rain. They should also provide a time where you can learn about things like taxes and mortgages as i have left secondary school and have no knowledge of anything like that. Even if it is just an hour a week, im sure we will be grateful for what we can get. A part from the fee flaws i have pointed out, Islwyn High School is a great school and will succeed to produce many great learners who will go on to succeed in all that they do. Most of the teachers are kind and understanding as long as you dont chat back and be disrespectful.
i'm not going to complain much because it's better than most schools in the area. some of the teachers can p!ss off but some are really nice (LP, RL, RW etc). ngl, i do want to kms everytime i walk through that gate especially with the new deputy but it wasn't my choice to let her in. thank god i'm leaving soon because it's getting tiring dealing with some of the twatty kids however, a lot of the kids are decent and mind their own business. overall, not bad, but it still could be better.
Yk what, I actually don't think the school is that bad now. I can't speak for any of the experiences of anyone else that has reviewed here, and most of what they've said is true. But, I have loads of teachers that I trust and can open up too, and the students aren't that bad. It might just be because I'm in the top set, but I feel like most of the teachers support me and my classmates and want the best for us. There are a few teachers that I honestly wish were not there, like my physics teacher, because he doesn't teach us properly and we all are doing, quite frankly, sh*t in his class. But again, that might just be the cards I was dealt.
Islwyn high can go and collapse for all I care the teachers don't consider any of the students mental health they don't listen they never do and they never will when they say ''we always give you a chance we will always help you'' they don't and they wont I know that from personal experience the bullying system is bloody horrific again I know that from personal experience the only good thing they've done for me is give me a behaviour room thing which is actually pretty shite and they've given me a college placement just to rush me out of school cuz I ain't the best behaved person I'm trying to change my ways and to be good again but they don't recognise it and they don't appreciate it Islwyn high can go eat a turd
islwyn high can honestly go eat ass, the teachers got me thinking si why do good girl like bad guys, ive had this question for a real long time and they cant seem to answer. (but on a serious note, the school is useless honestly i hope the mine below it collapses dragging the school down with it along with the teachers, the teachers bully me more than the students, just because i have a peircing doesnt make me an emo, they are emophobic not letting is have dyes hair or even ear peircings??!?!?
Terrible school. There are a few individual teachers who seem to care, but the majority are useless and disorganised
Huge problem with bullying- especially for pupils who are openly gay/trans etc. Most staff don’t do anything, some even joined in with the bullying.
the appearance of the school inside and out is nothing out of the ordinary. as a year 11 pupil of this school i can tell you that it is a prison. during this corona virus, not a single pupil or teacher wear a mask or protection visor and actually quite a few teachers have asked me to take off my mask during lessons. The school doesn’t take into consideration that many pupils have to deal with mental health in shame and hiding and if they feel comfortable enough to talk about their mental health they get spat on ( not physically). the school does not allow anything that isn’t considered normal, like dyed hair, piercing etc. The lids that act up in class, instead of being removed or spoke to they get encourage, the school says that dyed hair will stop certain individuals from laughing yet they allow the loud kids to be louder especially during GCSE. this school is like a prison, you can never leave, only when everyone else does, if your food well then you would have to starve. islwyn high can eat my arse.
islwyn high school is possibly one of the worser high schools you could go to; the building is too small to accommodate the teachers and students, they are in debt so they have to make cuts to teachers' wages, teachers have to share the classrooms and the students are rough/sometimes violent. they don't teach remotely useful subjects to prepare the students for life beyond the educational system and the majority of teachers favour certain students so that the remaining few are left to drown in depression and stress.
they do nothing to cater to the fact the students are struggling, not caring about their home lives, and thus put every student under unbelievable and unfair amounts of stress.
the cafeteria is far too small and you're not allowed to stay indoors--even when it's raining. the amount of time the students are granted to go indoors, get their food and eat it is way too short and there's barely anywhere to go to relax due to overcrowdedness and the inconsiderate rules.
half the teachers had given up with physical education because most of the students simply didn't comply and nothing was done about it.
bullying and harassment aren't taken very seriously so it was very common for students to feel unsafe and not cared for in school.
the library was barely in service so you weren't even allowed to read in there; the library was also used as a classroom because all of the classrooms are taken/overcrowded constantly.
im thankful i don't have to go through another day there.
