Howard of Effingham has a serious problem with bullying. They have policies which focus heavily on proving that any bullying has taken place, so basically if it is not on camera, or the bully doesn't confess, they won't do anything about it. They think that they can fix problems with restorative sessions but I'm afraid THIS DOES NOT WORK. I have been through a complaints procedure, and it gets you nowhere. The headteacher is hostile to any dialogue about the issue and makes you feel like a nuisance for your child being bullied. I deeply regret sending my child to this school.
Definite culture of bullying the less popular kids and teachers do nothing to change that, and no support to your child.
SEN department is completely overstretched so zero support in that department too.
Overall, nothing positive to say.
Terrible Leadership, DSL needs sacking she is totally unqualified for thispossition and doesnt even follow their published procedures. Home Link worker lies, they cover up each others miscommunication!
The education is good and in some cases great but the SEN is poor and there is a definite culture of bullying. The concept of bullying is not understood by some staff and thus it is a very mixed bag. There have been a number of serious incidents in recent years and the have not appeared to respond appropriatly.
This school is a mess. It wastes educational time on reviewing and disciplining skirts, untucked shirts and tie length. The school has no concern for mental health or student well-being and yet they are so patriotic about their school
aside from the mediocre academic teaching style, the howard drastically struggles with enforcing safeguarding, and ensuring the best for students involved in friendship related issues.
from my experience, there is a blatant social hierarchy enforced by the students themselves. the teachers do nothing to help those who are less popular, and favour those who are most popular. no matter how extreme the situation, the senior leadership team ‘resolve’ issues by moving past them, as opposed to using appropriate punishment. instead behaviour marks are carelessly dished out over petty issues such as uniform and chatting. real problems are looked over, and some (not all) teachers seem to be in a whimsical fantasy land where teenagers all share a level of maturity that would assist their ability to ‘talk’ things out. this ends in more arguing, distraction and in some cases violence.
overall yes, the teaching lands good grades, but the mental health of the students eclipses this fact.
The teachers are amazing; the classroom dynamics incredible; the curriculum diverse and all-encompassing and the overall environment fantastic. Everyone is accommodated, from the very bottom to the very top, and everything about the school environment is community-based and focused on personal development. I literally cannot fault the school (except for the atrocity that is the canteen food)
During my time there most of the bullying situations were handled poorly. There were no specific rules against homophobia, sexism or racism, while I was there I often heard several of these comments a day (most of these during lessons, where it was very likely that teachers overheard) but I only remember two occasions where teachers actually did something.
Furthermore, throughout years 9 and 10 we had citizenship lessons - though almost all of them were used to talk about how bad drugs and alcohol are rather than giving us things like a proper sex education (I know it’s not required by law to teach about queer sex but they could have at least covered it), or to properly teach about pressing world issues like racism, homophobia, climate change, etc..
Overall it’s a decent school, actually above average in most academic settings, but it really needs to work on handling bulling and related issues.
