Unfortunately I recently went to this school for a cross country event. After my child needed the facilities. on entering we had to walk past the school changing room and shower room, I was mortified to see the state they was in it was dark dirty and there was mould growing in and around the shower and shower curtain. My other children have to use this on a weekly basis and felt it was something out of a horror film. There is no need for the poor standard when local swimming pools and gymnasiums can be kept well lit and clean for the public.
Your children, if minorities or ill, are not safe here.
This school is not safe for anyone who is a minority or struggling at all.
I used to be a student here. I vividly remember the severe bullying that took place, that nothing was really done about. I know of countless times where police intervention was necessary for action to take place.
I vividly remember swastikas and hate speech being carved on desks and drawn on leavers shirts. Groups of boys were walking around proudly with great big swastikas and slurs on their backs, and teachers were happily signing their shirts and not saying a word!? How is this supposed to make any student of any minority feel safe?
Ive witnessed LGBTQ+ students be hatecrimed both verbally and physically, with little to nothing being done to stop this. Ive witnessed students be bullied to the point of suicidal thoughts and attempts, and little to nothing is done to combat this. Don't believe me? 12 students reportedly tried to take their own life between Sept-Nov in 2022, and those are only the students who reported it. Many go unheard, or unreported.
I remember facing sexual harassment at this school, as did countless others. I remember reporting it, and guess what I was told? To wear something less revealing (i have a big chest, and was wearing a black tank top and a blazer on top. my chest was not revealed at all, except a small amount of cleavage if i was bent over.) Sexual issues tend to be very covered up, defended, and normalised here, and victims are often blamed rather than supported. As well as this, boys are very loudly and openly shouting misogynistic, sexist, and "rapey" comments with absolutely no consequences!? Im not a boy, so i cant speak on their behalf, but i do know one thing: the girls are not safe.
Additionally, I remember a time i was discriminated against for having healed and faded scars on my arms. In the middle of a heatwave - where many students were already being physically sick at the heat - they tried to force me to wear the thick school blazer at all times at school? they wouldnt do this to a student with burn scars, or perhaps an injury, so why am i any different? its discrimination, period.
Furthermore, many teachers are incredibly biased. For whatever reason, many teachers would not reprimand students disrupting classes, and sometimes even encouraged disruption by joining in on chats, meaning those of us who tried would miss out on learning time and often face bullying within the classroom.
Finally, hygiene is also not great. Not sure if it is still there, but I was at this school from Y7-11 and the whole time, there was a great big patch of mould in a classroom right above the seats. I couldnt possibly name the countless times id walk into a bathroom to find used sanitary products stuck to walls.
However, it wasnt ALL bad.
The education itself, when a teacher actually cares enough to control the classroom and help their students, is very good. I remember struggling severely in maths due to severe mental and home issues, and i cannot thank my maths teacher enough for the incredible amount of effort he put into trying to ensure i could reach my potential. you could truly tell he cares about his job, and the same goes for some other teachers here too. I had a great english teacher, and I remember my chemistry teacher in y8 over the pandemic was amazing too.
Also, the food isnt...terrible? obviously, youre not going to waltz in and be served with a set of golden spoons and a five course meal, but its not rancid.
Overall, this school has many issues it needs to fix for the safety of their students, ESPECIALLY students of a minority. It has its good qualities, but theyre completely overshadowed by the vast amount of problems that Ive found the school would rather cover up or ignore than actually address.
My child feels trapped in this school and has bad mental health problems and she struggles all the time at school. She gets bullied and no one will sort it out. I had to speak to multiple teachers and they still did nothing. She is now scared to go into school and struggles to make any friends there.
Hornsea School is a somewhat good school but there is so many awful things that happen which ruins all the great things that happen. Certain teachers are really manipulative and when they go to “sort an incident out”, it’s mainly just screaming at the student that’s supposedly done wrong, they won’t listen to your side of the story at all and they will call you a liar and they will punish you for it. In winter you have to eat and stay outside and the teachers get mad if you’re inside, even if it is freezing cold. If it’s raining you have a ‘wet break/ lunch’ but if it’s not raining, you have to stay outside, this is purely because of lack of room inside the school to fit all of the students. The toilets have zero privacy, teavhers stand outside the toilets watching you go in and out, and sometimes even inside the toilet to ensure you’re not “vaping” or “vandalising”. But most of the time people go and eat and stand in the toilets because it’s too cold outside and they aren’t allowed in classrooms, or hallways. Another fault is the queues at lunch/break are horrendous. They make you queue up OUTSIDE and the lines are so long that all the food is either gone or cold by the time you actually get to the canteen.
But the biggest fault is the fact that racism/ homophobia/ bullying is so bad and it just gets brushed under the carpet. Racist slurs get said all the time to people and if a teacher hears it, or it gets reported, they choose to just say “don’t do it again.” and that’s that. But if you don’t have your blazer on? Immediate written warning and if it’s continued you get an isolation. How is that remotely acceptable? Don’t send your child to Hornsea school, they get great results at GCSE but the school life can be really horrific.
very biased, insanely sexist, some teachers sanction you based on how liked you are, for example if a teacher hates you and another student who they liked lied about you and got you in trouble, they wouldnt even think to believe you in any way, ive been on the bad end of this once before, this school is bullying, biased and sexist and if you even want a chance of being happy here you better stay as far away from trouble as you can otherwise it will be hell for you, hence why someone changed its name on google to "hornsea school and hell on earth", someone i know at this school was being threatened with exclusion for something they didnt do and was unable to leave the room until they admitted to doing the thing they were accused of doing even though there was 0 evidence, very very biased, i was also a victim of horrendous sexism and the teacher i had at the time would not tell of any girl no matter what they did, the girls were on there phones, loud and did little to no work, whereas every boy had to sit almost in silence and we would get told off for absolutely nothing, even the girls thought it was unfair and blatantly sexist, pastoral is little to no help unless they like you, otherwise little will be done
Teachers made up their own rules and were biased and treat students depending on how much they liked them, one of my teachers didn’t even know how to teach the subject properly, gave me a lot of mental health problems, dreaded going there everyday and just wanted to do my exams and get it over with so i can finally feel free, don’t get me wrong some of the teachers were amazing such as miss mosely because she wasn’t too strict and was understanding and could take a joke and generally made the lesson enjoyable and something i was actually excited to go to, most other lessons were poor and there wasn’t much if any enthusiasm resulting in not many people caring because nobody was excited to go to that lesson, overall not the best and could use some serious changes in a lot of areas, amazing head teacher though, really thoughtful and understanding towards students especially myself, actually listened to what you had to say and understood what you had to say and why you were saying it and gave a fair response that you couldn’t really complain about, overall the school isn’t great at all but there are a select few teachers that make it worth going but not that great of a school considering how many people left with serious mental health issues.
I would not recommend any child attending this school.
I was subjected to severe bullying, that was reported to staff which lead to being offered counselling. The councillor given after many sessions ended them because “she didn’t know how to help me”. When my school did a follow up on me to see how it went I broke down - this lead to nothing.
Some teachers are amazing and genuinely care about their students and their well-being. Others teach with installing fear into their students. I remember our table debating who was going to ask how many paragraphs to write - we where all scared of our teacher. After we agreed I was the one to ask. They humiliated me in front of the class. This teacher did this on multiple occasions to different students. When a student with dyslexia was asked to read out loud (which they found challenging) they were told that they sound like a ‘robot’ and they ‘shouldn’t be in this class if they couldn’t read.’
This school is very strict which is needed in some cases. But their attention is on the wrong issues. A student who has a nose piercing or an ‘unnatural’ hair colour can be put in isolation for days until it’s changed. But those who cause major disruption or homophobic slurs will get a warning and not much else.
It is quite good for a secondary school, and there are nice teachers but the uniform policy is too strict. I enjoy lessons (especially Drama and PE) but there are a few teachers who will not let you out until way after the bell so this results in us not having access to the good lunches. Break and lunch isn't long enough!! Apart from that it's a good school and it's easy to find your way around.
its okay. for me the school has never been horrendous- but there are without a doubt things that need to change- especially regarding the extremely strict rules. a deviant child can run havoc around the school and still not get sanctioned half as severely as a student with a nose piercing. although their efforts are there, their priorities need to be redirected.
on a positive note though, the amount of support that the school provides for child safety, mental health and home welfare etc are outstanding. staff are incredibly flexible and able to tailor to a students' needs should they need a different or unorthodox approach to their education. great school, decent pupils and of course- a great area
I love it the teachers are really helpful and aren’t strict they are always up for a laugh and joke and if your ever feeling upset they will always help student support people are amazing In making you feel better and if your ever being bullied or something has happened they jump straight onto the situation and fix it ASAP I love it and defo recommend it❤️
Amazing school has the best teachers. Lessons well structured for me 7/8/9 at gcse and hopefully will do similar at A-Level. It also has really good food
All in all it is a great school to study at. I do not disagree worth the fact that there are strict behaviour rules in place given the amount of pupils who did not obey the old system before planners. I am one of the older students who saw the school and how they have changed to make things much better not only for students but also the parents, careers or guardians. They have a great child centred approach which allows for anyone to get the support that they need and for it to be communicated to the correct outside agencies. I believe that there are still aspects that they need to work on but that is only very few and small aspects.
However a student will be sent to isolation for not wearing their uniform correctly, however, acts of racism, homophobia and overall bullying only results in a ‘verbal warning’.
Also, with the planner sanction scheme, most teachers will reward students who are generally poor behaving, but show one positive act, but students who behave well all the time, don’t get as much praise. And teachers will make their own rules just so they can sanction a student with a ‘written warning’.
I also feel that the hiring of the staff could be better, me and my peers have been called “stupid”, “ugly”, “fat” and “worthless” by the same teacher. But when we complain, nothing seems to happen.
Guess I should leave this on a positive note, most teachers want to see us succeed and strive for the best, and will go out of their way to make that happen for us.
The majority of the school is about average in its dealing. Most teachers teach very well; however this is cancelled out by the horrible behaviour staff and policies. You can get removed from classes for forgetting your planner twice, however blatent racism is met with "keep apart".
If your child doesn't usually get introuble, this will change. Their written warning system means that everyone I have spoken to has one, mostly for something you wouldn't imagine would be punishable.
While the majority of teachers seem to teach well, there behaviour staff and policies are not. They remove you from your education if you forget your planner twice in a half term, however they don't deal with blatent racism with more than a "Keep apart".
