The canteen prices are way too high and 10 quid can barely last a week, some of these teachers don’t seem to even know what they are doing, the maths homework is absurd with how long it takes and is a waste of time. Even one of the maths teachers couldn’t get a simple question right that the whole class got right. And the rules of not being able to go to the toilet in lesson, you can’t control your bladder. The amount of subjects are pretty good and it’s a good school but the teachers and canteen prices really ruin it. Seriously considering homeschool instead of this place.
The school in general is good, However, some of the teachers (I genuinely think) came from a mental asylum. Also, the ICT department has not got the funding it needs, the computers are about 15 years old and have software that doesn’t even load Google sometimes. The food is sometimes good but you don’t know until you taste it. Thr food is also MASSIVELY overpriced for example and simple cheese and ham panini is £2.55 last year it was 2.10. Overall a pretty decent school with a good education system, would recommend.
Functioning school that serves its purpose but has management failures
Good quality of lessons and teaching on most occasions. Wide range of subjects to chose from for GCSE and A-Level, as well as extra-curricular opportunities.
I completely agree with other reviews in the sense that this school cares too much about its public image and reputation. It's as if some senior leadership team members don't seem to be capable of everyday responsibilities, such as duties on the playground or reports of bullying. They really do sweep it under the rug and walk around the site with walkie talkies looking as if they are being important, caring too much about the overall appearance of the school and not individuals.
Students receive little to no feedback in class, including in Year 11, which is arguably the most important year. For example, books are not taken in for marking and there are not enough revision sessions hosted. Yes, teachers do make the effort to help revise for exams, but no this is not personal or in depth.
IT facilities are really lacking. Computers work spontaneously, with some not up to date with the same programs as others. Generally unhelpful when you need to use them. Also, when the printers run out of ink, it takes at least a week or more for them to be addressed.
A minority of staff members are unpleasant to students - e.g. in the exams office and a couple of SLT staff. I'd say one of the worst offenders is within the main reception. Appears very grumpy and agitated when you have a request or enquiry, despite being in quite a comfortable working environment.
I have no doubt that all schools have issues. Some people may not find what I've said to be true, but I'm going by what I have witnessed and felt. It's by no means a bad school and you have the capability to do well, but I feel like some areas need attention.
Situations aren’t dealt with such as bullying within school and outside of school. Lack of compassion towards students who have mental health issues. Punish and blame victims of bullying rather than the perpetrators . They care more about image and grades rather than students well-being. The headteacher is a joke with how they manage the school. They put students at risk.
Teaching staff are excellent in many departments and I can’t sing their praises enough as to how supportive they are for all abilities however this is all drastically undermined by the ineptitude of senior leadership and management who are more concerned with keeping a good image rather than effectively dealing with situations and leading the institution.
George Abbot School is comprehensive and of high standards when it comes to learning and the needs of individual students. Amazing teachers and staff. I've made so many memories there and will dread leaving next summer.
I loved it. Lots of great memories. I am particularly into music so spent a lot of time there using the great facilities (also great music teachers). I've now left for university.
Very good school. Generally the teachers are intellegent, good at their job and of a high calibre with a few notable exceptions. Rules are readonable, the events being hosted (outside of COVID-19) are great fun. From what I'm aware of, George Abbot is one of the best state schools in the area and I'm pretty sure about 3-8 George Abbot sixth-form students leave to Oxford or Cambridge each year which is relatively high compared to other schools of its kind.
