old fashioned and uncaring

Girls are discouraged from wearing crop tops, sleeveless tops, shorts or skirts because the college dress code is ‘business casual’ yet boys were allowed to wear joggers and trackies? How is that business casual? RE lessons, MET, other compulsive things were typically anti-islam, anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti everything. I understand the school is Christian but being asked to list the negatives of homosexuality as an 18 year old was just bizarre. Bullying was terrible, people getting spat on, things thrown at them, and the teachers did nothing. In y11 first aiders threw out all my emergency medical supplies because “I was leaving soon anyway”. Doesn’t take a genius to realise the teachers / staff don’t really care about anyone who’s trans, gay or of a different race because the treatment of those students is vile. PE is also ridiculous - why are girls playing netball and boys are playing rugby? Why are girls not allowed to play contact sports? Boring old fashioned school. Terrible place, went there from ages 11-18. Worst experience of my life

My traumatic experience at ems

I am a former student of ems and I was utterly appalled with the treatment and environment around me there was constantly fights and always arguments which pastoral had no intention of resolving also I was forced to learn with children who were extremely badly behaved which effected my learning experience and altered my enthusiasm to learn now the teachers were awful I was constantly removed from lessons because I was asking if had permission to use the lavatory teachers consistently said no even though it’s a human right and when I protested against this I was suspended I feel this school is an embarrassment to what it used to be like when my mother attended I will forever regret and hate my experience at ems it was traumatic and wrecked my mental health and well-being although some teachers actually cared about students 97% were so clearly there for the money I im appaulled at what this school has become and I’m so glad I have left for good

DONT SEND UR KIDS!

This school was once a nice environment for children to learn in BUT NOW ITS NOT. The staff genuinely do not care about you or your wellbeing. Reporting any incidents in that school is useless. We are no longer allowed to go to the toilet? Which is a basic human right, do you want me to piss on the floor? There was once a boy in my year who threatened to shoot up the whole school and himself, had a kill list which many people had seen, sent one of my friends a message on MICROSOFT TEAMS which teachers can read all of the messages, saying he was going to ‘stab her’. We get told any messages like this get flagged on a system which certain staff can see, and nothing got done about it. Many people made reports of this disgusting human being, even a teacher, and still nothing got done. Another one of my friends got told she should be chained up and killed for being a part of the LGBTQ community AND YET AGAIN NOTHING GOT DONE. I also witnessed a Philippine girl get told she had to get back to her own country, THE RACISM IS APPALLING. DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS COME TO THIS SCHOOL.

This school is an absolutely disgusting, it has turned into a prison. Teachers with walkie talkies and no fun at all allowed in school? My son dreads going to this school every day because all they care about it attendance and how their school looks to other people! Everything they post on both facebook and instagram are lies lies lies!

Don’t go for your well being as a human

The school is pretty much a concentration camp
do not go to this school. If you are a nice person and respect people for who they are, you will get bullied, hurt, ganged up on, and it will make you want to not be here. The bullies don’t get dealt with. The teachers are nice but the staff are terrible I got pulled out the toilets once and when I told my parent she called the school and the person in question said I lied.they don’t care for you. You will end up feeling alienated and not going into school. DO NOT GO IF YOU WANT A HAPPY SCHOOL LIFE

Bad and going downhill

The teachers are decent but the pastoral/SEND are all poor with bullying rarely held accountable. There is also a lot of discrimination with it being common to see the n word and autistic used as an insult. Not good

Terrible Management

Terrible leadership and management. Teachers leaving every week and some new teachers leaving on their first day. No control over students and poor decision making. Doesn’t see education as a priority, preferring to indoctrinate students with over bearing Catholic views in a dangerously authoritarian atmosphere. Teaching staff are generally very promising and dedicated, but aren’t allowed to teach how they know is best. Very controlling management. Definitely a school and sixth form to avoid.

Awful school

I went to this school and am now in college, and let me tell you this school is AWFULLLL

If you are not a cisgender neurotypical white man, you will be bullied. If you are bullied and try to speak up about it, nothing will be done in my experience. I was harassed and assaulted in one of my classes by a student and when I told my teacher what was happening, nothing was done about it. I wish I was joking, but NOTHING was done. The teacher said they would "keep an eye" on the student but harassment continued until the next year when classes and seats changed. The guy who did it I believe is still at this school attending college. I tried to reach out for help but the lack of care absolutely fucking crushed me. Do not go to this school.

Transferred here when I was in year 7, left to go to college

This school gave me trauma <3

A lot of staff were very nice, others were horrible and couldnt do their jobs properly. The new building is nice, but the learning environment in classrooms was horrible and bullying was not taken care of well at all. Neither was harassment. Detentions were unnecessary a lot of the time and they don't take into consideration that some people have learning difficulties and require extra help and might not learn the same way as other students.

I am so happy that i’m out of that hellhole, and now in a school where bullying, homophobia, racism, sexism etc is actually sorted with. I made the worst friends at this school. (Yes I’m talking about YOU travis.) Easily the worst two years of my life. I’m so much happier now i’m out of there. I’m glad my dad lost his job

I'm literally hatecrimed on a daily basis get me out of this school. Anyone that goes here who isn't straight, white and neurotypical is automatically seen as worse than everyone else and is bullied. I'm sick of thr blatant racism, homophobia, sexism, ableism and so much more discrimination. This school is the reason for my collapsing mental health and probably the mental health of others

Utterly Horrendous

I was a student at this school for 5 years and it was a horrible experience. The teachers were ok, and lesson planning was ok, but administrative staff are absolutely incompetent. For the whole time I was at school, It was almost as if I wasn’t even in the system. There were many awards that I had won but had never been given the certificate for (e.g. attendance awards). This was demoralising because I had put in lots of effort for what seemed to be no reason. On one occasion, I was under review for Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the school just decided that they had no reason to comply with the mental health services, resulting in an inconclusive test. Just because the administrative staff couldn’t be arsed. On another occasion, I had reported another student for racist speech after seeing a video of them saying “Islam is dangerous”. I told the head of our year group and showed him the video, and he said he would take it up with the pastoral managers. Three days later the student in question had been promoted to prefect by the pastoral staff. The only conclusion is that the pastoral staff are bigoted racists and couldn’t care less about the wellbeing of their stundents. Once I was suspended from school because I had a picture of a good friend of mine (who is of gypsy traveler descent) proudly driving a traditional bow-top caravan. The head of year found out about the picture and had me excluded because I had “superimposed his face onto the caravan” as a discriminatory gesture. This, however, was clearly not the case, as the picture was a screenshot from the lads own YouTube channel! Now I’m sure I have a permanent record somewhere that says I am a racist because of this, and that could potentially cost me a job later in life.
These are just a few stories of mine about how terrible English Martyrs School is, there are plenty more to choose from but I think these best serve my point.
Overall, the school is a terrible environment for children to learn in and should be avoided at all costs, which is a shame because the teachers really did try their best. Unfortunately this doesn’t make up for the fact that the administrative capabilities of the school rival that of a gargling baby.

0.1/10 - Do not under any circumstances send your children to this abysmal secondary school.

Bullies are never held accountable

The amount of bullying that gets swept under the rug at this school is shocking. Ive seen blatant racism, physical abuse and relentless bullying of lgbtq+ children. On top of that many of the school policies seem to encourage this behaviour as trans students aren’t recognised by their real gender but the one they were assigned at birth, forced to use disabled toilets and sleep in a separate area of the accommodation when on school trips.

Additionally, sexism is a huge problem in this school as boys are encouraged to play contact sports such as rugby and football and on occasion boxing which the girls do not get the opportunity to do. whereas the girls are encouraged to play netball and badminton and the boys aren’t given the opportunity to learn this.

Many of the schools moral values interfere with the actual learning process. For example their version of sex education encourages children not to use contraception as it’s seen as “sinful” and to instead try and guess if the female is fertile. They also only teach to a heterosexual audience which isn’t realistic in this day and age.

The teaching is of a decent standard and the children seem to enjoy and engage in their lessons it’s the people higher up who create these issues and allow them to continue.

good for academia, bad for bullying

it’s a good school academically but it is really bad for bullying even thought the school likes to claim that they have a no tolerance bullying policy. i have witnessed many many racist, islamaphobic, sexist, transphobic and homophobic behaviour and language and the school does absolutely nothing about the vast majority of incidents. there is also a lot of general bullying and although there are systems in place to support the victims there is very very little repercussion for the bullies. my friends brother was bullied so badly for his entire school career, people verbally and physically abused him, they would follow him home or stand outside their house or attack him if they saw him in public and the school let this spread to the point where kids he’d never met or talked to or younger kids felt comfortable bullying him. the school did nothing for five years despite their parents constantly phoning and going in to talk about it. finally after four years of my friends brother’s miserable school career, a teacher came back from a transfer school and expelled five or so of the main, key, ringleader bullies. they told their mum that the bullies need to be educated gently and they were here to learn too but they drove my friends brother to severe depression and anxiety twice apparently now and even suicidal thoughts. this also really effected my friend & i remember her crying in a biology lesson in y7 about finally having witnessed an incident of people badly bullying her brother first hand. some teachers really don’t care and i’ve heard a few teachers themselves saying casually racist or sexists things. it definitely feels like most teachers are friendlier to and prefer the bad kids rather the vulnerable kids who try hard and behave.
the school also doesn’t teach sex education or anything about life itself such as bills or uni or how to write a cv or get a job etc. it doesn’t teach anything about modern issues like sexism or racist or homophobia which is SO important for kids to be learning in order for our society to change and for us to achieve equality.
in PE, there is still mild sexism, boys and girls have different PE uniforms and boys get to learn more “masculine” things such as contact rugby whilst the girls are only allowed to play non contact tag rugby, the boys also don’t cover many of the things the girls get to do simply because of gender.
the school also doesn’t make an effort for transgendered students. trans kids are made to use private disabled bathrooms, have to sleep in a private room away from their friends on school trips and will be told they cannot go on a trip if a separate room cant be found for them away from all the other kids. these are all things that one of my openly transgender friends has experienced and told me about. i have many closeted trans friends who fear coming out as they will be made to isolate in certain events and will almost definitely be bullied and not protected by the school.
the school also cherry picks only the smartest kids to go on trips to learn about going to uni etc. and i know that lots of my average friends feel that the smarter kids are definitely favoured and my smarter friends feel so much pressure and develop mental health issues.
the school does however provide decent mental health facilities and areas for vulnerable kids to go if they need time and space away or help.
the school is also very good for art, music, performing arts and sport.
it also provides good sites and support for revision and extra work and teachers are always open to help struggling students if they ask.

only good for white cisgendered heterosexual males

as a person of colour and student i’m totally ashamed to attend this school. students get away with anti-lgbtq+ actions, racism, misogynistic actions and the teachers aren’t much better. i do feel rather unsafe because i know the school do the bare minimum when it comes to racism. i have been told to go back to my own country, that i could be famous if i took a bottle of water home, i’ve been pulled down stairs by my afro, i’ve been spat on, i've had people put things in my hair, i’ve had a teacher tell me and a friend (who is white) to stop comparing tans, an r.e. teacher said “if you’re going to get a chinese don’t go to the one on oxford road because they sell dogs”, my friend had the word n*gga shouted at her repeatedly and the school did nothing, a boy undid my friends bra from behind her, another boy called women dishwashers, another called me a t*anny, another called me a d*ke and a f*g. i’m pretty sure the single reason i haven’t been jumped by someone from my school yet is because i have to pretend to be intimidating so people leave me alone. when my friend who had the word n*gga shouted at her was verbally abused, she just sat down with me and cried because she new that the school wouldn’t do anything. things like this happen all the time to people like us and nobody seems to care. yes this school might be this best in the town but if this is what the other schools are competing with, they must be even more horrific.
