Dalkeith High School has significant problems with bullying that they seem incapable of dealing with. Those on the receiving end are treated as if it's their own fault, and many are forced into homeschooling with their mental health in shreads whilst the purpetrators get to continue their education without any meaningful consequences to their actions. Essentially, it has become completely normalised to torment vulnerable pupils in and out of class. Being bullied is framed as a "special need" so the victims are told to change their behaviour, avoid the corridors, avoid the lunch hall, avoid the playground, go to support for learning instead of attending lessons with people who bully them. Meanwhile the bullies are free to continue as they please. This school does not provide a safe environment for learning.
There are some good teachers at the school who really do try their best but there is also a huge lack of understanding about SEN and autism in particular, even amongst the learning support and inclusion staff, and a general sense that nothing can be done to stop the bullying. The anti-bullying policy is a joke. The bullies don't care about getting a telling off.
For many Midlothian families DHS is the only available catchment school and for those travelling in from rural areas where public transport is poor-to-nonexistant the school bus is the only option for transport. There is nothing in place to protect vulnerable pupils from daily physical, verbal and online abuse and in many cases no-where else for them to go.
If you're considering moving to Midlothian and looking at school options, I'd strongly suggest avoiding the DHS catchment area unless you can afford private education or your child enjoys the type of "banter" that leads people to attempt to take their own lives.
horrible service. manager was not accommodating at all and the staff were all very rude. food was cold stale and overpriced. was 10p short when buying toast and i was humiliated by the obtuse woman behind the till. i had nothing to eat that day. overall bad experience do not recommend!
this school has failed multiple proberly 100ds of students. Teachers can be okay but I think they just need to learn not every kid is perfect and gets on in school some can be distruptife it could be a shout out for help and many more or it’s there way of coping or they have a hidden disability, Dalkeith high school is not good at handeling bullying , my mum has tried for years to get me to school but Dalkeith high school has done nothing, no wonder kids at a young age have anxiety, social anxiety, depression and ect all because of schools such as Dalkeith high school thanks bye and stop failing students xx
It is the most corrupt organisation I have ever had the displeasure of attending. GAIL PRESTON, you should be ashamed well and truly. You as not only a human, but as a teacher, are a poor excuse of management. You had knowingly made fun of several students (one time, on account of a student’s sexuality), your daughter faced great nepotism and advantages resultant of your position. I was in the year above your daughter, and I often fell absolutely awful that her peers in the year below were often being treated in such a way that could NOT under ANY circumstance be construed as equal.
ELIZABETH MCGLASHAN. You are the root cause of my ever-present anxiety + depression. You told me I faked my anxiety and depression. I was nearly driven to suicide due to your words. I recall you threatening to banish me to a nearby school as I had defended myself in class against my bullies. You are a truly despicable human being. You made my life Hell, you made me feel like I was below you. I had came to you in tears as a 13 year old and you mocked me, you sent me into solitary confinement for four days. It’s been nearly a 9 years but yet still I remain a victim to your words. I regularly missed physical education because of my mental health issues (of which were dismissed), but you shouted at me and asserted your authority. I was a young child and to this day I can’t quite muster up the belief that you would have treated someone so young with such little compassion. I physically couldn’t look you in the eye. I hope you receive Karma.
The school is disgusting and dirty inside and out. Most of the staff are disgusting and crusty. DHS is really no place that inspires or encourages. In fact, all students feel the only exciting part is leaving. Crusty and Rusty. Bad school all round.
