I had some good times here, especially in my last year as I got on well with my teachers and felt they had improved, but it's still a long way from being a decent school.
I was a head student for my final year and I never felt we were listened to. We had so many complaints regarding how they dealt with COVID and bullying at the school. They brushed aside our concerns and would instead do the complete opposite, proving they didn't listen or take us seriously.
The teachers would also change constantly. It was rare to find teachers that would actually last more than a year, let alone the 5 years you spend at the school. Some would even only stay a term then quickly leave. This made learning inconsistent and a lot of the time, we had gaps in our learning that we were told "is our responsibility to learn at home", rather than at school. If I wasn't going to learn the content, why go in?
Like I said, the teachers in my final year were fantastic. They genuinely seemed to care and I adored them. However, we have had some questionable teachers over the years. One teacher was heavily sexist and even though she claimed to be feminist, would constantly tell girls to act "ladylike" and be extra judgemental on female students. Another teacher worked at a private school, and would brag to the class about how much better the students at his private school were and how they were "getting straight As" yet we were too stupid to get what he was talking about, which is highly unprofessional to say to students. On an occasion with a teacher I thought I got on well with, he had mocked me and my friends in front of the whole class and him and another teacher danced around the class over us making a mistake. The school did absolutely nothing about this. We brought it up to higher staff and they said we would have a sit down to talk about it and make amends, yet that never happened.
The students were also a nightmare. Most of them are heavily racist and homophobic. If you are gay, expect bottles to be thrown at you and to be called slurs in the street. If you are black, expect to be hit with sticks and leaves while the students yell about you being their slave and them being your slave master (during which the teachers would watch and do absolutely nothing about it). Bullying was atrocious, and again the school did nothing about it. All we would get is an assembly every year on Anti Bullying Week about how bad it is, and that was basically it. This never changed throughout my time here and I doubt it's changed now.
As I said before, I did have some good times here. I got on well with my teachers in the final year and felt very supported. I felt the subject teachers have improved massively in terms of teaching and connecting with the students. The higher up staff however, not so much, as they seem to treat the students like a number rather than a human being, and take any complaint or concern from a student with a pinch of salt, even if it's as horrific as sexual assault.
I believe this school has made an effort to change and wish to start anew, but if you are going to start anew, it would be better to start from within and change the people running the school, than the name and uniform. You can change the appearance all you want, but the people inside are still rotten.
I will admit i had some of the funnest years of my life there and wish i could go back, but education wise it’s awful and also the teachers only seem the acknowledge the kids that don’t behave. I’ve been extremely depressed & anxious all throughout my years there and in the final year there i developed an eating disorder and no teachers even picked up on anything until year 11, when they did pick up on it i was told that someone like a counsellor or something was gonna come in & help me and it never happened and i never heard anything of it again. it’s quite a severe illness for them to brush off but there priority was mostly what your uniform was like and if you were wearing trainers, they didn’t seem to care about much else
Having left the school this week, I felt it right to leave a review here. The school is closing and opening as a new school in September, and I hope they do it right. There are some AMAZING staff there who have got me through 5 years of difficulties and they make the school what it is. There are some horrendus teachers, who should have been sacked a LONG time ago. The teacher in ***** who dresses like***'s going for a night out, the teacher in** who can ruin a lesson in 20 seconds as*** cant do her job. But there are some really good staff. One of the big problems is that there are so many changes (like every half term) its no wonder the staff cant make the changes we get told about in assembly. The former headteacher has now returned and the school seems better.
I used to go to this school and quite honestly just cannot recommend it less. My years at this school were honestly the most horrendous and difficult years of my life. When my year 11 year ended abruptly due to covid I was quite honestly glad that I didn’t have to enter this school again.
Causeway’s approach to bullying is quite honestly disgusting. The amount of times I reported incidents and got ignored or I got told I was ‘being too sensitive’ and to ‘grow up’. I got cyber bullied by people in the school and was told ‘we can’t do anything because it didn’t happen on school grounds’. I had people taking random photos and videos of me on and off of school grounds. When I told the school they did absolutely nothing. I was told to get over it.
The school behaviour and rewards policy was quite honestly ridiculous. Kids who never behaved were rewarded if they behaved once, whereas those like myself who were always doing the right thing got no recognition and were ignored.
When I was in Year 8 I started to struggle with my mental health. I was having panic attacks in lessons and was given a temporary time out pass that only lasted for a term. After that I was told to get over it. I tried multiple times to speak to teachers and they told me to just get over it, or to ‘be appreciative because others have it worse than me’ nothing was ever done about it.
Causeways approach to students with learning difficulties was also quite honestly disgusting. I had friends who were desperate to pass their English and maths but needed the support to be able to do so, but were not able to because the school just didn’t help them.
A lot of the teaching staff at Causeway are rude and just not helpful. One of my teachers almost made me give up on my dream career as she made my lessons in that subject hell. I was one of the few people in the room that tried and was given so much flack for ‘not putting the effort it’ even though I was top of my class by a lot.
In another subject we had the teacher throw our books on the table at us because she gave us many hours of homework that we just didn’t have time to complete on top of all our other GCSE subjects.
Staff had been reported to transphobia and homophobia many times by students, but nothing happened. She still works there and simply worked out which students had reported her and treated them in a poor manner.
If you can help it avoid Causeway at all costs. My school friends and I all agreed, if we could go back and choose a different school we would.
I cannot stress enough, do not go here if you can help it.
They don't handle bullying well, are overly strict with uniform and phone policy (locking away phones when they so much as vibrate or fall out of a bag/pocket) they don't handle serious situations appropriately, nor do they handle mental health effectively.
When I was in this school, I had a serious altercation with another student, and he was barely given a warning, and simply told not to do it again, I was then forced to sit near this person in tutor and some lessons despite expressing my serious concerns.
Problem students are ignored, and bullying in the classroom is often overlooked, u less specifically reported, and even then, they often get nothing more than a slap on the wrist.
Their approach to mental health is seriously lacking, and incredibly embarassing. My experience was being taken out of a class, sat in an office and immediately being told to roll up my sleeves, without so much as a warning of what the conversation was about. Then the issue just seemed to fade away with no real support given to me, other than a time out card, which I was too anxious to use.
Later in my time in this school (the begining of year 11)the school promised to get me some kind of support, after I expressed to a teacher that I was struggling, however this never happened, and I had to seek help myself.
There was also sexist and transphobic encounters with one member of staff, including being told to "act like a lady" whenever I was loud, however my male friends, were never told their behaviour was innappropriate to their gender.
The headteacher changed at least three times since I joined in year seven, and teachers came and left at a ridiculous rate.
There was also holes under the fence, and people often managed to sneak out and sneak back in without being noticed - which is a huge security concern if people are sneaking in unnoticed?
If I hadn't of had friends there, I would have changed schools.
Up until year nine, I loved it there, but as you go up the years in the school you often come to realise it's nowhere near as good as it should be.
There is some incredibly good teachers, and very supportive. Computer science in particular, my teacher was amazing, and incredibly supportive and always made an effort to make sure all his students were doing okay, however I can't reccomend this school to anyone after the below par experience I had there.
I love Causeway. The teachers are amazing and so supportive. The lessons are great and it’s so clean. Everybody is lovely, it’s the best Secondary School ever.
