Good school, don’t bash it

I left in 2022 but only just come across this website. It is a good tool which should be used widely and I hope the school sees it. My experience was really good overall. I think some of the reviews here are petty and bitter ex students. There is no way this was a bad school. A few comments are worth sharing:

1. I saw one review which said only History is enjoyable. This is true for many including myself but I’m not knocking any other subjects. The History teacher who am sure everyone knows doesn’t realise how loved he is and most would list him as their favourite. I admit I had a crush but I know so many others who did/do. And why? Because he is really clever, smart, really really funny, cares a lot about students and tret us like grown ups. Revision sessions in the holidays! No problem if he’s doing it! However for his own health needs to stop smoking and quit the heavy drinking outside of school. People worry.
2. My other favourites were maths. This is because my teacher was also very smart, really funny and quirky and worked really hard to support students. She had great phrases and comments. Some people only hated maths because you were pushed very hard. Proper heart and soul given by maths.
3. There are also some kind and hard working teachers in other classes like English, science, geography, design and religion.

This school was great to be a part of and I had an enjoyable experience. Go see for yourself. Every school has problems but this school deals with things as best as it can. I’m sure ofstead rated it good recently.

Pretty good acedemics wise, but pretty bad for students wellbeing

First point I wanna make is that I feel like the school cares very little about your mental health. They used to have a "counselor", but sessions were only once a week and pretty useless to be honest. To make matters worse,(probably to cut costs) the school got rid of him and replaced him with one of the heads of years (who pretty much everyone is terrified of and probably wouldn't want to open up to)
They also focus on attendance wayyyy too much making it out to be some massive issue if you're off for more than a couple of days
Most of the teachers are really nice and would go a long way to help you, but some are unnecessarily harsh and can be really horrible sometimes, causing students to be scared of them, which I feel like is often used to their advantage.
Last point, P.E is focused on so much more than it should be. In P.E lessons, even if students are extremely uncomfortable or in pain teachers will still force you to participate. In my final year, when PSHE would be needed most, our PSHE lessons were reduced to one lesson every two weeks to make room for another P.E lesson. Great.
I'm not saying everyone finds the school to be this bad, it might just be my experience as an individual.

overall pretty bad

don't go here if you can help it. the school (in my experience) generally tries as hard as it can not to accommodate neurodivergent people and mostly cares very little about your mental health. way too much focus on attendance and couldn't care less about the actual reason you're off. some the of non teaching staff are pretty awful, especially 2 of the 3 heads of year who are disproportionately strict, pretty useless, and know they scare people and use it to their advantage. in one instance a student who had footage of a male student hitting a female student was punished more severely than the student who the footage actually showed which i'm pretty sure was down to the head of year. i personally found the 1 other head of year very helpful and nice though we only had her for a year. actual teaching and lessons could be worse honestly, but some teachers can be pretty horrible at times. a few are actually really nice though. also in year 11 one of the literally only two fortnightly pshe lessons we had got replaced with a pe lesson so cool i won't know how to pay taxes or manage my money or get a job or have safe sex or take care of my mental health but at least i'll have experience playing badminton.

Depends if you want to lose your mental state.

This school had a stupid dress code. Sure this was to make it look professional when travelling to outsiders but it was stupid. Academic side was terrible. For example some teachers in the computing department are that bad they do not know how to even fix a slightest issue on the network. They end up having it support to fix it which will take ages and is not always reliable. So in terms computing department for this school is terrible. You even have computers that hardly work, it also poses tons of security risks towards the network since of computers running on Windows xps and Windows 7.

Maths for this school was alright. In my experience ended up having 7 different maths teachers for my set which screwed me big time in the end. You end up learning one method and you get taught another one by a different teacher. One of the maths teacher in particular makes you feel suicidal and angry, they also do not care about your mental state and will still have a go at you for forgetting a green pen.

English was also feeling suicidal. English was alright till we got transferred to another English teacher which made the situation worse. It felt like we did hardly have any time to take a breather for the next work.

Religious education oh boy, you are forced to learn religions that you do not want to learn. The religion being crammed down your throat for a course is stupid.

History was the only one that was actually good and enjoyable.

Handling bullying was terrible. I ended up getting more support from friends than school staff itself. They also do not really understand the aspects of mental health which is really bad.

Just be warned stay away from q couple of staff members. They will make you always feel terrible and its not great.

Bad school

Terrible school, bullying is common and nothing gets done quickly, no punishments were made for the bullies as most of the time they were the staffs favourites. And if you go to a staff member about bullying, most of the time they’ll turn the blame onto you. Most staff are really good teachers, but some shouldn’t be working in a school. Mental health help is poor. Very insensitive “counsellor. Teachers shout a lot. It’s a small school, but staff will still overlook you if you have a problem.

send your kids here if you hate them

absolutely awful mental health "counselling" as they call it, which mostly consists of insensitivity and lack of understanding.i won't name names but most of the non-teaching staff are completely useless imbeciles who have no idea how to approach mental health issues. When I missed a lot of school they were more concerned about the Ofsted attendance report than what was actually wrong with me. p.e staff should be locked up to be honest.

Insensitive

Treat you like rubbish. Lots of injustice everyday, set 1s given special treatment from teachers, bad at dealing with mental health problems. You would think as it’s a small school it would be nice but from my experience it was far from it. It had a few nice teachers but my time was mostly traumatic at cartmel. I wouldn’t recommend this school.
