Carmel is a fabulous school with great leadership, as a stundent, they really care about your personal needs, especially in the sixth form. The level of support they provided me with during GCSE’s was great and all of my teachers were open to sit down and work with me outside of lesson time. The current SLT are amazing , they don’t just hide away in their offices, they walk around school, they speak to students casually, and do dinner duty etc. Furthermore, Carmel goes out of the way to provide students with an enormous amount of exciting extra-curricular/enrichment activities and clubs, there is always something for students to get involved in. During my time at Carmel in KS3 and KS4, the school has improved massively. Although, it was already outstanding, there has been a really positive change in atmosphere with more focus on wellbeing, mental health etc. When i started Carmel, there was much less of a focus on this, whereas now, in my opinion, students feel much more open to speak about things that may be troubling them with their teachers, form tutors, head of year etc. The actual building and site is well looked after and kept very clean and the buildings are in good condition. I don’t love school but I really do look forward to coming into Carmel everyday.
Very good school, staff are nice and supportive, behaviour dealt with appropriately and many opportunities for students within school from a wide range of options to over 100 extra curricular activities through the week not to mention other activities such as the summer show and liturgies. Would recommend to anyone in the north east area.
If you have a child who does not "fit in with the crowd" DO NOT SEND THEM HERE!!! They don't think bullying happens in their precious school and will happily let victims be spat on, attacked, picked on and even allowing a Yr 11 male throw a rock at a year 7s female head and then say to year 7 "well if you don't know his name nothing we can do" fand send them on their way... for moths she has been bullied and walked around alone on breaks etc and they just don't care nor try to prevent it ... absolutely disgrace of a school and such a massive let down to many vulnerable pupils
Some of the teachers are really bad at accommodating students disabilities, I've had multiple bad experiences with seizures from teachers. It stressed me out so much I moved to a special education school.
I am currently in my fourth year studying at Carmel. Simply put, this school is nothing short of a pure paradise! Everyday I go to college with a smile on my face, ready to learn! The teachers are incredibly supportive and always providing extention work for me to do at breaks and lunch. I especially love mathematics where my teacher miss Atherton is always going above and beyond to assist me in my academic success by giving extra work and 3 hours of homework a night, which I love as homework pushes me to achieve my best! However, I do have 2 problems with this great beacon of hope for the future. Firstly, i do not believe the current quantity of homework is adequate to my demand and that I need much more to truly test my abilities. If im only getting 6 hours of homework per night, how am i supposed to achieve 110% in my examinations (my daddy hits me with the belt when I get less than 105%). Second, i believe the discipline levels in Carmel are disgracefully low. For example, one unruly student once missed a whole question out of his 8th piece of homework! And can u guess what the penalty for this most atrocious crime was? Only a month in detention! Can u believe that? It should have been at least 3! In conclusion, despite these flaws, I still believe that Carmel is a wondeful school and any parent should absolutely send their child there! Also dont believe what the unruly naughty children say, theyre just jealous of my superior intellect! Thank you for reading! Now GO DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!
I have ASD (autism) and I've found because I am a girl and I don't have any severe needs due to masking the school has made no effort to help me in any way. I have been going to carmel for six years now and I am now going to college there and have asked countless times for additional help to make school more bearable, for instance making teachers aware of my autism and social anxiety and yet they've failed that simple task. Time and time again we've had to ring due to overstimulisation which has led to me crying and hiding in bathrooms and yet they always seem to "forget". The school cares far more about grades and appearances rather than the wellbeing of their students. And don't worry I am not the only one who has encountered these issues, countless students have left due to the lack of help given to the students who are not the smartest or loudest or those who make an imprint on the school, and the best part about those students leaving is that the school tries to bribe them to stay with empty promises of assistance! I have tried to leave many ti.we due to bring unable to cope and it is only then do they offer the assistance you have been begging for all these years, and I feel tricked when I remain due to the fact NO HELP IS GIVEN EVEN THEN!
So if you do consider going to this school make sure that you are nurotypical and require no assistance at all and the school shall praise you and show off your grades as though they were their own.
So I just left the school in 2020 and I have started at a local college and The difference in the way I’m being treated is amazing. Firstly, Carmel will be guaranteed to break the promise they make you. For example, I asked for dyslexia testing (later on in college I find out I have severe visual stress) they didn’t do it and told me to my face that I “probably don’t have it”. Secondly, there way of putting massive of amounts of pressure on students about exams was not helpful, especially at the time I was struggling with mental health issues. Thirdly, when students are being bullied or even occasionally Iv has racist remarks, nothing was done about it even after informing head of years. Fourthly, teachers will have favourite students and it’s clearly apparent. I would send my kid here even if your paid me but don’t get me wrong they where some lovely teachers that did their best and I will back them up 100% but quiet frankly the school seems okay cause they have a big shiny OFSTED report but underneath it’s pressure and anxiety filled.
