Went to this school a few years ago and enjoyed it (for the most part). Change in Headteacher (Because the Walmsleys actually seemed to care about students compared to the new one) has lead to serious issues in the school.
I was shocked when I heard about the prostitute comment, they're children, calling a child a sex worker is disgraceful!
My siblings follow a strict uniform policy, something it seems they care more about than the wellbeing and safety of students.
They make kids who self harm have their sleeves rolled up so everybody knows, that's why so little pupils tell anybody. They preach acceptance towards gay people and go against racism. Its all talk. They do nothing about either of these things when issues actually occur (believe me, I've seen it).
Teachers favour kids who act out and allow them to bully other kids. Quiet, intelligent kids are never rewarded.
The year 11s this year were being taught science by supply teachers. The year I was in had a high fail rate (and grades were predicted so I can't imagine what it's like now). Just all round not a good school anymore, not like when it was a small building in a call centre.
Go to shuttleworth and save yourself the disappointment.
This school is worst ever assisted head a bully the head knows about her behaviour and has no backbone to do anything about it other teachers don't communicate with each other children going home crying because they have had no dinner or not been able to go to the toilet even ones with doctors notes this school needs all new teachers that support children encouraged them to trust adults
As a past student I found this place vile and the bullying there was outrageous so homophobic and racist. They would block the toilets off during class and no one was allowed to go without a pass which was vile the teaching there also some of the new teachers were good the old wants were vile never wanna see that place again.
Burnley high school is a disgrace. There is no mental health resolve, bullying is a large factor at bhs and teachers know it happens and nothing is done. The whole thing at bhs is the bhs way but no one follow it neither do the teachers
I hate this school. Not one of my personal experiences however my best friend tends to get bullied a lot and the school is aware of his bullying yet they don't do anything about it. The teachers (the vast majority) will often take the more 'popular' kid's/group of kid's side which is also quite pathetic. The school has also been quite short staffed for a while and we have been having lots of substitutes during lessons which doesn't allow us to learn well as the substitutes barely ever know what they are doing.
Think very hard before you trust your Son or Daughter to this school, they have a bullying problem which they are unable to deal with, it took my family 4 years to receive an apology from them regarding this issue.
I’m a former student of this school and I don’t think the school is fully responsible for things that may of happened to me and my mental health going forward but they did play a part in it, I didn’t feel safe enough to be able to tell the teachers how I was being my treated or being bullied, the teachers who were mostly nice were always with the “popular/bad” students and seemed to get way more unneeded attention for being bad behaved then the students who were clearly struggling.
I do believe teachers had bias towards some students, and some just didn’t even pay attention to other students who were struggling.
This review is from my personal experiences nothing else, I don’t believe they handle bullying right because me and my siblings all experienced bullying and when my sister spoke up nothing much changed even in the classrooms kids get away with clearly bullying other students in front of teachers as ‘just a joke’
don't like this school, they dont support individuality but heavily say that they do, force kids to look a certain way, kids who cant speak up get bullied infront of the teachers and they dont do anything, kids get attacked by other students just for being different the school say they support LGBT+ but their actions prove otherwise, they refuse to call people by preferred pronouns, they do not have enough bathrooms and seem to love rewarding bad kids just for being "slightly better than normal" but completely ignore the kids who just quietly get on with what they are told to do, they are more obsessed with how a student looks than their mental health
terrible. The only word I would use . Terrible. Some of the teachers (only about 4) actually care but all of the others just sit there and think that 11-16 year olds mental health dosnt exist. The school also has a serious bullying problem wich does not get sorted at all .
Teachers call female students prostitutes, allow sexual predators to come to school, tend to give more attention to kids that act like shitheads but drone on about good behaviour. Only have 3 toilets for the entire 5 years of female students, you can't go when they tell you to and get mad when you need the toilet during lesson. Barely provide the necessary help to students who actually need it and complain when they get bad grades. They talk about self expression but won't allow any individuality. Can't even provide enough food, often teachers somehow can't or don't notice the cancerous tumor that forms near the front of the line because people push in. And honestly the posters about gays have caused more problems for us than there were in the first place.
When i went to this school there were 0 mental health resources and no sympathy for kids that were struggling. The uniform is extremely strict and allows no individuality. Teachers preach about telling somebody if you’re being bullied but when it’s one of the troublesome popular kids its brushed off and said “they wouldn’t do something like that”. I was moved between the same 2 sets for my classes so often and as somebody who doesn’t handle change very well it was very distressing. Overall awful experience here and glad i no longer had to stay.
They don't allow for any individuality and girls all have to read there hair up. You get random back checks weekly and loads of kids get bullied. Just a bit of a shit school
I went here about two years ago, don't know how it's changed since, but for me? Any other school in Burnley. Some teachers care more than others and will go out of their way to help you (that's true) but some are absolute... you know. Careless. Little things to some big things they have done over the years have just really ticked me off. Still. Some very fond memories.
So far only 1-3 cases since September started. Since the start the school has kept a strict ruling on seating plans, mask wearing and sanitizing. Its Great.
