Overall, I was pretty happy with the academic team at Bosworth, and most of the teachers are people I really miss. But the boarding is just horrible! Most of what they did was just for show, like STUDY HALL. If someone doesn’t want to study, they won’t, no matter where they are. But for those who actually want to study, it’s just a huge disruption. I could be studying in my own room, focused and uninterrupted, for 3+ hours, but because of the study hall policy, we all had to pack up our books, laptops, and everything, trek all the way to the main campus, just to study for an hour and then head back. Not only is time wasted going back and forth, but the actual study time is only about 40 minutes. Plus, we’re stuck in a room with 30 - 40 other people, constantly getting distracted. And don’t even get me started on how much worse it is for students with online classes. A lot of students and the boarding committee suggested that we should be allowed to study in our rooms with the doors wedged open so the house parents could check in from time to time. But no matter how many times we brought it up, it was completely ignored— this whole setup looks better to parents and makes it seem like the school cares about our studies.
Also, the SCHOOL ACTIVITIES. I don’t know why the boarding activities barely happen—maybe 4 times a year tops: Easter, Halloween, Christmas, and some random event like a local council arranged fair or something. That’s it. And the school activities are always the same—disco, every time, and it’s always compulsory. Not quite inclusive.
Plus, the boarding team is always making a big deal about school trips, with cheap posters plastered everywhere, only to cancel them in the end!! This has happened so many times! According to more experienced students, the last trip that actually happened was like 2 or 3 years ago when they just went to Birmingham once. I just wish the people in charge of organizing these activities/trips would realize that if they can’t plan things properly, they shouldn’t promote them in the first place. When we sign up, we have to clear our schedules!
Hi, a previous student here. I will not reveal my identity due to privacy reasons. This school is the literal epitome of insatiable desire for money & appearance and I’m going to explain why. Also note that some information may be inaccurate.
Also note that I may heavily exaggerate some ideas but the general ideas are shown clearly towards the atrocities occurring in this school so thank you for understanding.
CONTEXT WHICH MAY BE IMPORTANT FOR THE EXPLANATIONS:
Is a boarding school and for each boarding house, there is a boarding staff to take care of students
The school is heavily reliant on investors for money which most of the times goes nowhere but their pockets instead of putting it into the school
The school used to be decent before a Chinese company bought it off and became a commercialised and superficial School, desperate for money and how parents and investors (NOT STUDENTS) perceive the school.
You need to walk from the boarding house to the dining hall which are in separate buildings
List of problems:
1)Horrible Policies: (Mostly boarding problems)
1.1) Study Policy: For context, boarding students are required to go to ‘Study Hall’ where they are supposedly have to study 2 times a week. I have brought the topic up several times to the vice principal to remove it yet he continues to ignore it deliberately. Same goes for the head of boarding who WAS NOT PRESENT AT ALL LAST YEAR and only showed up this year once more investors started visiting.
One of the few reasons I believe this ‘study hall’ exists, once again falls upon appearance. ‘Study Hall’ is an ideology the school forms to fool the eyes of investors and parents to say that they ensure their students keep an ideal grade for ‘good responsibility’
I have argued with some of the staff multiple times why Study Hall is very unnecessary and very inconvenient.
First, no one studies. THAT IS NOT AN EXAGGERATION. Most students prefer to study alone in their own private dormitory where they are used to the environment without the pressure of studying with many people and all study resources are steadily available for them to choose from. Secondly, it is just so cramped and filled to the brim with noise.
To the person who made ‘Study hall’ and still insists it is a reliable site for us, students to study, no it is not. My third point will support it even further. ALMOST EVERYONE AGREES THAT STUDY HALL SHOULD NOT EXIST.
And this school has the word ‘independence’ in its name. I truly hope this is satire. There is no form of independence in students by forcing them to study and please know that we already study in our own time so do not waste our time even further by sabotaging our lives that we should be out living for the sake of how people look at you.
1.2) Phone Policy: Boarding students are also required to hand their phones in. Everyone has more than 2 phones and dear school, don’t even bother checking because this is private ownership not yours. Please do not demand us to hand in what is rightfully ours.
Also, NONE OF THIS IS ‘independent’. I have talked to many students about this issue and they all repeat the same thing: irrelevant. And how so is this irrelevant and not independent?
First, students actually use many resources from their phones to study since the school cares so much about our grades (and students care about our own grades too but just not just for how others perceive us) and also even if the students have all their study resources on their learning tablet or laptop, we still require a stable connection from hotspot on our phones to use while learning because the school’s internet is absolutely atrocious until the fact that they had to get a staff network for staff to use only (Yes, they prioritise the staff’s work over the student’s when the staff have barely done anything for the school - only some of them actually work because some people actually care about their job so god bless them) and this has turned into a school problem because most subjects require use to use our electronic devices which needs stable internet obviously. And the staff wifi is only in the school not the boarding house if anyone is wondering. (Maybe they have a secret wifi also 💀)
One last thing to mention about this policy: It does not matter to the school that they take our phones away but that parents and investors are aware that they are ‘responsible’ for us. Honestly, I don’t know if I can be disappointed even more.
1.3) Boarding House opening and closing times: I don’t want to blame the house staff but I blame whoever made the policy. I actually have no idea who has the right mind to inconvenience the students IF THEY ALREADY WEREN’T INCONVENIENCED ENOUGH.
I will start by stating when the boarding house opens. They literally open an hour after dinner on weekdays and weekends. And THEY LOCK THE HOUSE. Worst of all, on weekends, they only open 2 hours after brunch.
And yes I understand some people may not find any problem with that. But after some years, it has just become dull to just wait at the dining hall and study until the house opens. Even though you could go out, the town itself is not the most vibrant and SINCE THE SCHOOL cares so much about our grades, why not let us back in our rooms to study? All our resources are there and the school is limiting students on how they live and what they can and cannot do. And yes I do exaggerate a lot but you have to understand that students are very tired of the poor decision making this school has been making. This is just adding more to the inconveniencing pile the students have to bear daily.
To be fair, I kind of understand that they have a shortage of staff to keep the house open in case of intruders. But I will let you know that no one needs an hour or two for a break, especially when the staff work for only 3/4 days. I am not in any position to say this but some people work fair more and barely get any breaks.
But to the house staff that let the students in a bit earlier, you are a real one and we students appreciate that you can understand us better than this school ever will.
I will now comment on the closing time of the boarding house. Mark these words: VERY HYPOCRITICAL
Boarding students are to leave the boarding house at the time met not even a second late otherwise you will get a ‘strike’ (I will explain what a strike is later). BUT when the house staff opens the boarding house late (15 MINUTES), they simply get away with it. Wow, thank you school!
Strike explanation: When you get a strike you get an email sent to your parent. If you get too many you will have study hall, amazing.
2) Terrible staff:
NOTE THAT IT IS NOT ALL STAFF. SOME OF THEM ARE THE BIGGEST SWEETHEARTS EVER. But some are just really disappointing. Some staff are just obnoxiously narcissistic and does that bother me? Yes, somewhat. But to some of the students, I think they may have a grudge against them 😀. I have no idea why but some staff are unnecessarily harsh on the students.
For one small complain we students make against whatever poor policy, they completely invalidate our opinions, not allowing the students to voice their own opinions, even going to the extent of threatening to give a ‘strike’ just because we voice out our opinions.
+ THEY BARELY LISTEN TO THE STUDENTS OPINIONS (the ones who do we love you)
*they is referring to the head of boarding and vice principal too (they are extremely ignorant and I wish they take action soon)
BONUS RUMOUR!: Apparently, from what I heard, the heard of department for something (I FORGOT) fired a teacher. Worse part was this teacher was the only teacher who was teaching the particular subject in the entire school. AND THE SCHOOL DID NOT EVEN HAVE ANY REPLACEMENTS SO ALL THE STUDENTS HAD WERE SUBSTITUTES WHO KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THE SUBJECT.
Also said that the teacher was fired only because of one student giving a poor report of a teacher.
The fact that the head of department resorted to firing this teacher while basing off a poor report shows the poor decision making once again.
A lot of students also loved the teacher so I wish the best for whatever happens to him/her.
*NOTE THAT ITS A RUMOUR
Also the principal has barely done anything for the school apart from advertising it. Please actually do something 🤦♂️.
*BASED ON SPECULATION ONLY BUT MAY BE TRUE
HOWEVER, please note that a lot (actually just some) of the teachers and staff are one of the best human beings I have ever met (although some teachers that the school hired I think don’t even have the skills required for a teaching profession, some staff don’t even do their jobs - why are we paying for these services 😭). and some of the students here (although hard to find) are very supportive and understanding. So props to them.
I wish the best for students who still plan to continue their education in such an environment. So, to all staff, I wish only the best for what you do but please put at least some effort to the job you take on.
It is sad that I have to leave such a bad remark but we have to accept that all schools are not perfect and have pros and cons. However, the lack of effort is so noticeable that I cannot accept living like this, same with the rest of the students.
Do I speak for everyone? No. I am only a small percentage of the student body and I advise many of you who plan to join or invest in this school to form your own opinion.
The opinion you are hearing is just one of many angry and dissatisfied teenagers who simply ask for a little decency to not be shown as school property but as human beings.
To the school, the students are people and so are you. Just treat us students well and we will treat you back well.
There is so much more I have to write but there's a limit to how much I can write so you are just hearing part of what I have reduced 😢.
Sincerely,
an angry teenager who just wants to be heard like many others
My child moved here from another independent school in the county. The change in them is amazing and their zest for learning has returned.
The students are treated like adults and given lots of independence and autonomy. Teachers are focused and know every student and how to get the best from them.
The new facilities are great and they now take on from year 7.
