Overall decent school

It's an overall pretty good school, majority of teachers are kind and good at what they do.
The school very much does push university on you, they say that they don't, but that definitely is the impression that we all got.
A big positive about the school, I found, is that they are big on supporting mental health. It may depend on which Guidance teacher you have, but my experience was overall positive in that aspect. I did always feel like if I were to have an issue there would be atleast one member of staff I could talk to.
However, I will always clearly remember hearing a teacher who I will not name, on more than one occasion berating a pupil for a mental health condition. I also witnessed the same teacher mocking a students physical disability to the rest of the class.

It’s a hellhole

I went to boroughmuir. It was ok but provided me very little support and a lot of the teachers didn’t help either. Seem to be extremely ableist and can’t understand that the pupils are humans and can’t do bloody everything. I’ve had suicidal thoughts due to school and so has my sister. This school isn’t as good as people make it out to be. Some of the teachers need to understand that not everyone is comfortable in contributing to the class but they are still willing to learn so at least be grateful for that. Treated us as if we were robots expected ti know everything and got mad when we didn’t finish, understand an answer and say we “weren’t paying attention”. Or wouldn’t explain the questions well or tell us to try it ourselves. Belittled us a lot and thought that we’d be able to do the work like that. Attendance wasn’t fair. Praising a student infront of the whole class saying he got 100% in an exam isn’t fair then telling the rest we should have “revised more”??? Like who tf does that that’s not fair at all. WE TRIED OUR DAMN HARDEST!!!! So fucking glad to have got out of that school. It was hell for me.

good academics, but not as amazing as people say

It’s really good for academics, but the school doesn’t focus on the arts as much. Since it’s a good catchment, and the school has quite a lot of money, there are good resources for the arts, but most of the staff look down on them.

The interior of the school looks amazing (for the most part) but classes are overcrowded and since there aren’t enough seats some people have to sit on the floor and in the stairways.

The quality of learning is great and lots of the teachers are, but some have body shamed students, and are sometimes homophobic/racist (without meaning to be, which doesn’t make it ok).

The guidance teachers get next to no training and are just teachers who used to teach another subject. It is basically just a promotion, not a new job, so they get paid more and aren’t super helpful.

Good for results, not for much else

Good for academics, particularly science and maths and is high in the rankings (although this is largely due to the catchment area more than anything else) Many of the more arty subjects are sneered at by the guidance staff and career counsellers. It has terrible mental health support, especially for males. Pupils tend to be relatively well behaved although the standard is slipping. It has a problem of dismissing pupils complaints against staff members and the culture is very unhelpful to pupils who do have issues with behaviour, often writing them off in first year as troublemakers and makes little effort to offer them support to behave better and improve their engagement. Overall, the school is good for results but not for much else, it dampens creativity and is reminiscent of the grammar schools of the 50s and 60s.

Good for academics, not for anything else.

Academically rigorous. You are expected to achieve good results and the school will place a lot of pressure on you to do so. For some people this is helpful, for others it isn’t.

On the whole the teachers are lovely and very good at their jobs, though there are a few who are not so good.

The facilities in the new school are really nice on the whole but the school is too small so classes are a bit cramped at times. Not enough seats at break and lunch so many people have to sit on the floor in the corridors and stairwells.

The guidance department is unhelpful. The school is absolutely appalling at dealing with instances of bullying. I know people who have faced quite extreme instances of racism, homophobia and transphobia and the school never deals with it. They just pretend it didn’t happen. Guidance teachers don’t seem to have any sort of training whatsoever.

They aren’t good at offering support for people with mental health issues. I have overheard guidance teachers making triggering comments to people with eating disorders and I have had my own mental health issues downplayed and ignored by my guidance teacher (even in times of crisis).

A good school if you want to achieve academic success. Not a good school otherwise.

Boroughmuir review

If you want to do well, you will. The school ethos allows any hard working individual to achieve their potential. Like any school the teachers are mixed. Some excellent, some in between and some very poor. Although on the whole 90% very good. The facilities are poor in the new building. Classes very crowded and not enough space at lunch and break. A wide range of clubs and activities are available and this allows you to become a well rounded individual. Overall a great school and it more than definitely allows you to reach your potential and more. Pupils who attend are all pleasant and no one is too big of an issue.

A very good public school

Pretty good school if you’re a good student willing to work. Obviously has its issues but there are enough good teachers and not too much injustice. PSE department are very supportive and are in my opinion the heart of the school. The headmaster is quite disrespectful to students and thinks very highly of himself and does not come across as a compassionate person, really lets the school down. The rest of the staff are 90% great very kind which is what you need from a school, thanks to all the staff for making it a good school experience.
